Annual pump service overdue? Call us

The Foundation is urgently seeking volunteers to help collect during the Red Puppy Appeal street collection on April 1 and 2. The annual appeal raises funds for the breeding and training of guide dogs.

Blind Foundation spokesperson, Alison Wheatley, said guide dogs provide freedom and independence to people who are blind or have low vision.

“That means being able to carry out day-to-day tasks such as catching the bus, crossing the road and going to work.”

Ms Wheatley said guide dog puppies go through two years of rigorous training before they graduate. Once assigned, their working life averages between eight and 10 years.

“Some of this year’s graduates will go to people who haven’t had a guide dog before, while others will replace retiring guide dogs.

“We don’t charge people to receive a guide dog, all the costs for breeding and training are met by public donations. That’s why the Red Puppy Appeal is so

of the New Zealand public enables our puppies to succeed in their vital work.

Westland chairman Matt O’Regan said the search for a new CEO would begin immediately and Mr Quin has been asked to remain in the role until his replacement has been found.

“Rod has decided that after seven years in the role it is an appropriate time for him to seek a new challenge and for the co-operative to appoint a new leader.”

Mr O’Regan said Rod Quin had played a critical leading role in developing and implementing Westland’s strategy to move into more profitable added-value products, such as infant formula and UHT milk, and so reduce the co-operative’s reliance on the highly volatile bulk dairy commodities market.

“With our new Dryer Seven at Hokitika now operating, which was built specifically to produce high value

nutritional products, and the new UHT plant in Rolleston about to be officially opened, the key steps in this phase of our value-added strategy are in place.”

Rod Quin said it was his decision to step down.

“It’s simply time to go and let someone else bring their energy and style to the business.

“It has been a real privilege to lead Westland since April 2009 through to its current state.

While the markets are currently over-supplied and returns are low, I have every confidence the cycle will turn and Westland will, as a result of the strategic measures we have put in place, be a stronger company well into the future.”

Chief Executive of Westland Milk Products Rod Quin has tendered his resignation.

The Selwyn Arts Directory is the result of a collaborative effort between the Selwyn Arts Trust and Selwyn District Council.

It provides a comprehensive list of over 120 artists, arts groups, arts tutors and art galleries across Selwyn district. Creative New Zealand's Creative Communities Scheme funded the production of the directory.

Selwyn District Council Arts Coordinator Rachael Inch says the art directory brings together the visual arts, music, dance, literature, performance, venues, and arts organisations from around the district.

"Whether you are looking for tuition for yourself or your child, needing to learn a wedding dance, looking for galleries to visit or wanting to commission a piece of art for your home or business, it's all in the directory," she said.

Around 18 appliances and helicopters using monsoon buckets were used to battle a blaze in Downs Road, Hororata on Friday evening which destroyed a couple’s house and left one man with significant burns.

The fire also threatened nearby properties destroying a neighbours’ garage and forced the evacuation of a number of nearby properties when the fire quickly expanded due to high winds.

On Saturday afternoon a fire in a shelterbelt on Hoskyns Road near Kirwee threatened to engulf a house. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze although a garage, hay barn, several vehicles and sleep out, along with an 80m section of the shelterbelt, were razed.

"The fire risk in Selwyn has increased over recent weeks as weather conditions

have become drier so it is now appropriate to introduce a restricted fire season to reduce the fire danger," Selwyn’s Principal Rural Fire Officer Douglas Marshall said.

“Under a restricted fire season, only gas barbeques, crop residue and rubbish fires inside contained drums are allowed in rural areas of Selwyn.

“Any other fires can only be lit if a permit has been obtained from Selwyn District Council, but in the current dry conditions property owners should not expect to obtain a permit unless exceptional circumstances exist.

"Crop stubble fires are permitted in a restricted fire season but land owners need to be careful to ensure there is a fire break of ten clear metres around the edge of the fire to prevent it spreading,"

He said property owners need to

Ms Ludemann is glad the days of the chemical filled darkroom have gone and is thriving with the new challenges of post-production work on her images.

“I’ve called my exhibition ‘Gentle Impressions’ because life is too short not to notice the little things. There is scope to do more through manipulation to draw the viewer’s attention to things which may have gone unnoticed before.”

Ms Ludemann said she has been too busy before to even contemplate exhibiting her work to the public.

“It came up on Facebook actually and I wondered if they would contemplate exhibiting my work. So I sent a couple of images to Ingrid Cole at the Malvern Community Arts

Exposure daunts photographerCouncil and it went from there.”

She does admit to being a little daunted by exposing her work and herself in such a public way.

“I don’t really know what people are going to think, and whether I am a good photographer or not but I’ve always been a bit of a tearaway, drove my parents nuts doing all the things a young lady wasn’t supposed to do.

“If there’s something I’ve wanted to do I have gone and done it, regardless of what other people think.”

The exhibition, which features the work of Sara-Jane Ludemann along with Maja Moritz and Bianca van Leeuwen, opens this Friday at the Selwyn Art Gallery and runs throughout the month of March.

Dear Editor,

Following the recent lifting of the fire restrictions I have noticed that locally we’ve had some garden waste/tree branch fires, and it appears that people are of the understanding that no permit/resource consent is required.

I have always been intrigued by the fact that we are allowed to have burn-offs in such a dry place as Canterbury, and whilst I understand the reason for burning crop stubble, it’s the burning of garden waste/tree trimmings and the creation of such polluting smoke (not to mention quite high flames putting out a lot of heat) that recently made me (and some of our neighbours) wonder what the rules are.

Having obtained clarification via the Environment Canterbury (ECan) website and from the Council itself I think the way the lifting of the restrictions is publicised is cause for confusion i.e. there is not enough clarification around who is allowed to burn outdoors in the first place – it would be very useful to list the actual Zone names on any restriction or ‘lifting’ notice and show which are classified Urban and which are Rural.

For instance, in our township of Kirwee we have a lifestyle block area which is zoned

Letters to the editorLiving 2A (which is classified ‘urban’ not rural). Unfortunately it seems the general understanding here is that when the restrictions are lifted no fire permit/resource consent is required, but ECan clarifies that ‘burning in urban areas is not currently permitted (This includes any property zoned residential, commercial or industrial, even if used for rural related purposes). We have also had it confirmed by Council that Living 2A/Urban requires a Resource Consent for outdoor burning. However I can see why there is confusion, because unless you know the precise zoning of your property and you are on a lifestyle block, you would presume you are zoned Rural perhaps?

Instead of burning, ECan recommend composting, the use of chippers/shredders which create garden mulch, plus we have the green-lidded Council bins for waste that gets shredded and composted (all options that are better for your veges, and the environment!) I wonder if anyone from ECan or the Council could comment on the publicity side of things, as once a fire is lit it is pretty hard to put out even if there is a complaint to the ECan hotline?

THE RECORD MARCH 2, 2016 5

People will be able to visit heritage properties and museums in Hororata, Homebush, Glentunnel, Windwhistle and Lake Coleridge over the weekend of March 12 and 13.

The weekend follows on from the ‘Visitors Guide to the Heritage of Hororata and Beyond’ which the Hororata Community Trust produced in 2015.

“The visitors’ guide was a great process to get the community collaborating,” Simonetta Ferrari, owner of Gunyah Country Estate, said.

“We have so many heritage treasures in the district, to present them in one document really reinforced how much we have to offer. “We didn’t want the brochure to be an isolated one off project so the Heritage Open Weekend was the natural next step to showcase our district.”

Properties opening for the weekend include Gunyah Country Estate, Terrace Station, Homebush Stables, Cotons Cottage and Museum, Washpen Falls, Glentunnel Museum, Steventon, Rockwood Station, The Point Station and St John’s Church.

“Many of these properties are generally only open by appointment

Selwyn residents will be able to get an insight into some of the district’s historical buildings during the inaugural Heritage Open Weekend.

and prefer group bookings so this is a unique opportunity to really explore them at your leisure. A number of properties are offering special activities throughout the weekend.”

The Point Station will be re-cobbing one of their historic cob huts and people will be able to get hands on with this pioneering building trade. Steventon will entertain with readings from Lady Barker’s diaries giving a delightful insight into life in the early 1800s. Terrace Station will have a quiz table with 19th century items that are no longer used.

Ms Ferrari said there will be so much on offer. “People can enjoy museums, grand old homesteads, vast established gardens, bushwalks and a wonderful offering of food to treat the taste buds while exploring the district.

“With the Open Day being held over a whole weekend people can leisurely enjoy the properties and the interesting places in between.”

Some of the properties will be selling homemade baking and preserves to enjoy or visitors can call into the historic St Andrews of the Glen church and enjoy the quaint Glen Kirk Café. The Lake Coleridge Lodge will be open for Devonshire teas, which can be enjoyed

while learning of the history of New Zealand’s first hydro power station.

Windwhistle School will open its gates for the weekend offering a BBQ, playground for children and history on the area. People are also invited to bring their own picnics to enjoy at any of the properties.

“There is a range of accommodation from camping, B&B, self-catering and a resort style available in the district, we encourage people to make a weekend of it and stay,” Ms Ferrari said.

“On the Saturday night there will be a special event in the Hororata Parish

wooden church with readings from diaries of the pioneering land owners from around the district.

“While the aim of the weekend is not necessarily fundraising, any profits will go towards continuing to promote and develop heritage projects in the community. We are appreciative of the support from the Hororata Community Trust.”

Tickets ($35) will be sold at the Hororata Domain from 9.30am both days and there will be no ticket sales at the individual properties. More information is available at www.hororata.org.nz.

Gunyah Country Estate will be one of Selwyn’s historic buildings open to the public during the inaugural Heritage Open Weekend.

The biannual community event is one of the major fundraising activities for Darfield Primary School and will this year be held on Sunday, March 6.

“Fun, fitness and getting together as a community remain high priorities for the organisers,” one of the organisers, Katie Molloy of the Darfield School PTA, said.

“All funds raised go directly to purchase much needed new equipment for the schools new learning environment.”

The 12km, 6km, 3km run or walk, along with the 6km bike and fun obstacle courses for all ages will be there again, with favourites such as the hay bale maze, water features and stack of tyres returning.

The event begins at the Recreation Centre, Darfield Domain and races start from 10am. First off the mark

will be those keen for a 6km bike, closely followed by 12km, 6km and 3km runners.

“All these events make use of McHugh plantation before heading back towards the domain and finish line,” Ms Molloy said.

Nationwide, the benefits of the pollination flows on to livestock production and the meat and dairy industries. They are extremely important to agricultural and horticultural businesses.

by Dr Majorie Orr, www.lifesyleblock.co.nz

Bees are among the hardest workers on the farm, lifestyle block and in the garden, because they work constantly to pollinate clovers, garden flowers and many crops, and they produce marketable products such as honey.

However, their numbers are falling and this is a real cause for concern.

It's not an exaggeration to say that to help ensure the future of farming, all farmers need to play their part in protecting the honeybee.

What good could they do on your farm and in your garden?

While they are gathering pollen and nectar from clovers, fruit trees, garden flowers and many horticultural crops, bees move pollen from one plant to another, pollinating the plants as they go. This is necessary if the plant is to produce fruit and seed.

What is threatening bees? While all the reasons for dwindling

bee numbers and weaker hives are not fully understood we know three factors that are contributing:• dwindling flower numbers• the use of insecticides on the farm

and in the garden• pests and diseases that weaken and

kill bees

Flower sourcesNot so long ago, bees got much of

their pollen from broom, gorse and willow, and the pollen was very nutritious for hives.

These plants are now classified as pests by councils and the Department of Conservation, so there are fewer of

them around. This means that in many areas, there is less pollen and therefore honeybee hives are weaker.

InsecticidesInsecticides can take their toll on bee

numbers. Reducing bees' exposure to insecticides requires an understanding of the risks so that you can try to avoid them.

Try to avoid applying insecticides to flowering crops or weeds during daylight hours when bees are foraging.

Pesticides vary in their toxicity to bees and different formulations, even of the same pesticide, can have variable toxicity. Try to select granular products rather than dusts and wettable powders that may stick to body hairs on bees.

Pesticides that degrade within a few hours of application can be applied with minimal risk when bees are not foraging. When temperatures are unusually low, insecticide residues may remain toxic for longer. Products with activity lasting more than 8 hours merit extra precautions.

Spraydrift from the crop being sprayed can be blown downwind onto adjacent

crops or weeds where bees are foraging.Unusually warm temperatures in the

early morning or evening may result in bees foraging when they would normally be back in their hive.

Bees forage on average within 1.5 to 3 km of their hive, but sometimes up to 8 km during a pollen or nectar shortage.

PestsThe main pest problem affecting bees

at the moment is the varroa mite. Once this little parasite is established in a hive it kills bee larvae and damages the bees' wings and exoskeleton.

The varroa mite is well-established in the North Island and as far south as Canterbury, and it's quite likely that it's present throughout New Zealand.

Nationwide, efforts to eradicate it have not been successful, but fortunately bee-keepers can manage infestations in their hives by using various organic and inorganic miticides and possibly selecting bees for tolerance to the mite.

Will bees threaten you? Some people are afraid of bees, but

there is no need to fear them if they are managed by a registered beekeeper and

their hives are undisturbed. They will leave you alone if you leave them alone. There are no aggressive Africanised honeybees in New Zealand.

How to acquire honeybeesThe most hassle-free way of acquiring

a healthy bee presence is to ask a registered local bee-keeper if he or she would like to keep a few hives on your farm.

All you need to provide is a quiet sheltered sunny corner and plenty of flowering plants.

How to attract honeybeesTo encourage feral bees and bees

from neighbouring hives, plant or encourage bee-friendly trees and shrubs on waterway margins, in windbreaks, along field edges and roadsides and in native scrub and bush.

Fortunately a number of shelter and erosion control plants have abundant flowers to feed bees so selecting multi-purpose plants is smart farming.

To find out what plants are best for bees in your region, go to www.fedfarm.org.nz/reesforbees and to find out where to source plants, go to www.plantfinder.co.nz or ask at your local nursery.

Medieval castles had no windows, and curtains played an important role in keeping the place warmer. Nowadays we couldn’t have moved further away from curtains’ early start.

If your house is your castle why not combine the curtains’ decorative and warmth functions? Good soft furnishing retailers know all about both the fashion and warmth aspects of curtains and tracks. How curtains keep your house warmer

“Insulation is all about trapping still air,” says Caroline Shone, Chief Executive of Community Energy Action (CEA), a charitable trust that helps households make their homes more energy efficient through education and practical, affordable solutions.

“In double glazing that still air is trapped between two panes of glass. Similar benefits can be achieved by curtains but only when a layer of still air is created between the pane of glass and the curtain.

“This means the curtains are preferably lined, thick, have no loops at the top and are generously fitting the window frame on all sides.”Tracks

But it is not just the curtains that are important.

“Without good tracks, you don’t get all the benefits from your curtains,” Ms Shone says.

Curtains are most effective when used in conjunction with pelmets or so called ‘enclosed’ curtain tracks. These are tracks without brackets that sit directly on the window frame, wall or ceiling.

“When you are doing renovations don’t hang the old tracks back. And when building a new home, choose enclosed tracks, they are not any dearer than similar style standard tracks.”

Curtains, more than fashionArticle supplied by Community Energy Action

Curtains and double glazingWindows are often the weakest link in

a house and a lot of heat is lost through windows, even through double glazed ones. This means good curtains and tracks are still very useful in new homes and other houses with double glazing.Curtain Bank

750 households each year and has been going for 21 years.Other energy efficiency measures

Curtains are only one of many aspects of a house’s energy efficiency that CEA energy advisers look at when they perform a Home Energy Check, a thorough audit of an existing home’s energy efficiency situation and a priority plan for improvements.

Advisers can also look at plans and drawings of new homes and advise on

the energy efficiency aspects (Design Well Check).

General energy advice is available free over the phone, and the trust also has subsidies available for eligible households for insulation.

For more information or to make an appointment for free curtains, a Home Energy Check, a Design Well Check, or a free insulation check, contact CEA on 0800 GETWARM or visit www.cea.co.nz.

Curtains seem to be all about fashion, however that is not how curtains came into existence.

EECA ENERGYWISE technical specialist Allen Davison has simple tips to keep cool without blowing the budget.

Heat pump companies are reporting a boost in summer sales from people buying heat pumps for cooling, as well as heating properties. And some power companies are reporting spikes in electricity use on swelteringly hot days.

Before resorting to the cooling button on your heat pump, try to create a cross draft by opening windows throughout the house, allowing the breeze to waft through. Closing curtains will also keep the sun out.

Ceiling and floor standing fans are relatively cheap to buy and install, and are cheaper to run than air conditioning. They're especially good if you only get a few weeks of extremely hot weather each year.

Other options to think about are deciduous trees planted on the north and west of the house to provide shade in summer.

If you don’t have trees, eaves or roof overhangs stop sun entering the house in summer; alternatively external shades or awnings will do the job.

If you are considering a heat pump to use for air conditioning, make sure the appliance does cool effectively.

The Energy Rating Label, found on all appliances, also has a blue cooling star rating.

Energy rating labels all have a simple star rating - the more stars on the label, the more energy efficient the appliance is but also look for the specific cooling information on the label.

Cooling without overheating your budgetNew Zealanders are increasingly using the cooling buttons on their heat pumps to beat the summer heat but this comes with the risk of high power bills.

Make sure the appliance is the right size so it will cool your house properly without having to work too hard. The same sizing rules apply for cooling as for heating.

There are a number of ways to make sure your air conditioner or heat pump will cool as effectively and as cheaply as possible.

• Try using just the fan - most heat pumps or air conditioners have a fan only setting which can help create cross-draughts in your home. Keep your windows open while using the fan only mode.

• Use the dehumidifying mode - if it’s the humidity rather than the temperature that’s the problem. This mode uses less electricity than the full cooling mode. Shut your doors and windows in the rooms you're dehumidifying.

• Only use cooling mode on really hot days - when the other methods aren't enough. Shut all your doors and windows in the rooms you're cooling. It's best to just cool one room as this is what most heat pumps/air conditioners are sized for. Set the thermostat to around 22˚C. The room won't cool down any quicker if you set it lower, but you are likely to use more electricity by overcooling.

• Avoid using auto settings - if you forget to switch the unit off it will start heating if the temperature drops below the thermostat setting.

The energy rating label on a heat pump will also have information on the cooling level of the appliance. For more information on creating a comfortable home: www.energywise.govt.nz

Gardening

Autumn is when several varieties of strawberry (albeit it to a lesser degree) start producing all over again. The crop is nowhere near as plentiful as earlier in the year but the berries are somehow a lot tastier when there are fewer of them.

By now, most of us have lifted the netting off our strawberry beds and the plants themselves are looking tired and scruffy. But take a closer look and you’ll notice flowers popping up above the leaves. That’s your cue to take action.

Grab the scissors and trim off those dead leaves. Also trim off any runners (these are the leafy tufts at the end of long stems which grow away from the plant in their search for a new growing spot) and pot them up. They will grow on over the winter and you can plant them

by Diana Noonan, www.lifestyleblock.co.nz

If you’re dreaming over the strawberries you harvested in summer, it’s probably time you took another look at your berry patch. into a new bed come spring.

Alternatively, if you have garden that can accommodate them now, pop them straight into the soil.

To encourage your autumn strawberries to fruit, leave off the netting so the bees have easy access to the flowers (bees in cooler parts of the country are slowing down and you want to welcome those that are still about). As soon as young green fruit begins to appear, pop the netting back on.

Once the flowers have disappeared, hurry along the harvest by covering the plants with clear plastic over night or during cold conditions. (Strawberries attract mildew very easily so don’t leave the cover on for more than 2-3 days without lifting it to provide much

needed ventilation.)In autumn, gardens are usually

nutrient deficient after their active growth period over summer so mix up some liquid fertilizer by placing animal manure (not fresh from chickens or pigs as this will burn the plants), seaweed and a few scoops of compost into a large container of water. Let it steep for a few days, stirring often, then gently water the liquid onto the strawberry plants.

If you’re drooling over your ripening strawberries, you can be sure slugs and snails will be doing the same, especially in their wind-down to winter when food is becoming more scarce. Scatter slug and snail bait around the plants or get out after dark with a torch to collect the beasties and remove them from the bed.

Although it may seem like a lot of work to encourage strawberries to fruit in the cooler season, every bite is worthwhile. And, for some reason, late strawberries seem to have so much more flavour than those harvested in summer. I do wonder if it is because, at this time of year, the plant’s growth is going into fruit rather than leaf.

Tip: if your strawberry plants are not producing flowers in autumn, it may be because you are growing only main-crop varieties. For plants that also produce in autumn, look for the likes of ‘Seascape’ (especially good for drier areas of the country) and ‘Temptation’ which is high yielding and with berries that ripen over a long period from October to March.
