The Chronology of Flames Football

1971Lynchburg Baptist College was founded byDr. Jerry Falwell, pastor of Thomas RoadBaptist Church, and Dr. A. Pierre Guillermin.

1972Lynchburg Baptist gains affiliation with theNational Christian Collegiate AthleticAssociation.

August 1973Lynchburg Baptist College fields its footballteam. The head coach was Lee "Rock"Royer. The team practiced on Treasure Islandand played its games at Brookville HighSchool and Lynchburg City Stadium. Theschedule was mainly composed of junior var-sity teams. LBC finished the season withthree consecutive wins and posted a 3-3record.

September 1973The Flames first opponent was MassanuttenMilitary Academy. Lynchburg Baptist droppedthe contest, 42-32. The Flames first win cameover Ferrum College, 29-7, in the fourthgame of the season.

November 20, 1973Lee "Rock" Royer died tragically in a planecrash, and John Cartwright, assistant coach,was named Lynchburg Baptist's second headfootball coach.

November 1974Cartwright finished his first season with a 5-4record. This was LBC's first winning seasonwith a schedule made up of primarily juniorvarsity teams.

1975Lynchburg Baptist College was renamedLiberty Baptist College with the colorsbecoming Red, White and Blue. The Flamesalso joined the National Association ofIntercollegiate Athletics as an associatemember. Liberty Baptist played its first fullvarsity schedule and finished with a 4-5record.

November 1976Cartwright posted the first winning season atthe varsity level, 5-4-1.

1977Tom Dowling is named LBC's third head foot-ball coach. Cartwright concludes his careerwith a 14-13-1 record. The first full-time assis-

tant coach, Lee Kaltenbach was hired as theoffensive coordinator. Kim Raynor and ScottGoetz were selected to the Churchmen's All-American team, LBC's first football all-Americans.

December 1978Dave Hertzler, Ed Landis, Rupert Wright, RodGladfelter and Steve Kearns were all namedChurchmen's All-Americans.

November 1979LBC posted its best record at 9-1-1. SteveKearns, a tight end, is drafted by the BritishColumbia Lions of the Canadian FootballLeague and became the first Flame to play atthe professional level.

1980LBC joined the National Collegiate AthleticAssociation at the Division II level as anassociate member. The Eagle was chosen asthe official mascot. Glenn Inverso signed afree agent contract with the New York Jets tobecome the first Flame in the NationalFootball League. LBC played its first NCAA I-AA opponent, James Madison University, los-ing, 30-14.

November 8, 1980LBC won its first NCAA Division I-AA gamevs. Morehead State University, 23-20.

1981LBC joined the NCAA Division II ranks andbecame eligible for NAIA postseason compe-tition. The Flames Sports Network began withJerry Edwards handling the play-by-playduties as the "Voice of the Flames."October 24, 1981LBC played its first I-A opponent, FurmanUniversity, and lost 38-14.

November 1982Liberty Baptist finished the 1982 season witha 7-4 mark and was ranked 19th in the NAIADivision I Poll. Mitchell Clark earned first-team NAIA All-American honors, and JohnSanders was named the first Kodak All-American at LBC in the college division. MikeForslund and Jeff Brown were the firstFlames drafted by United State FootballLeague, signing with the WashingtonFederals.

August 29, 1983LBC was ranked 17th in the NAIA preseasonpoll, marking the first time the Flames earneda preseason ranking.

September 1, 1983LBC was accepted as a member of the EastCoast Athletic Conference.

1983Liberty dropped its NAIA membership andbecame eligible for NCAA Division II postsea-son action. Dowling finished his career with a33-38-2 record.

May 30, 1984Morgan Hout became LBC's fourth head foot-ball coach in the school's history. He finishedhis first season with a 5-6 mark.

1985LBC was renamed Liberty University. FredBanks, a wide receiver, became the firstFlame to make an NFL roster, signing withthe Cleveland Browns.

September 21, 1985Liberty defeated James Madison, 9-3, to postits first win over an NCAA I-AA team from thestate of Virginia.

November 6, 1985Treasure Island, the Flames practice facility,was washed away in a flood, causing theteam to cancel the remainder of the theirseason.

December 25, 1985Kelvin Edwards, wide receiver, played in theBlue-Gray All-Star Game, becoming the firstFlame to play in a college all-star game.

April 1986Kelvin Edwards was selected in the fourthround by the New Orleans Saints.

December 1986Wayne Haddix was named Liberty's first All-American by the National Strength Coachesof America. He also played in the Blue-GrayGame and the Senior Bowl, becoming thefirst Flame to ever play in the Senior Bowl.

December 7, 1986Mark Mathis was named to the AmericanFootball Coaches Association's Division II All-American team. He became the first Flame toreceive this honor.

December 1987Mickey Paige was named first-team All-American at the Division II level by FootballNews Gazette.

September 1, 1988Liberty became an official member at theNCAA I-AA level.

November 1988Liberty finished with an 8-3 record for the firstyear at the NCAA Division I-AA level. TheFlames were ranked 20th in the nation by theFootball News Gazette.

December 1988

Mickey Paige earned third-team All-Americanhonors, and Paul Johnson was named honor-able-mention All-American by the FootballNews Gazette. Morgan Hout was namedVaSID state "Coach of the Year."

December 18, 1988Sam Rutigliano was named Liberty's fifthhead football coach. Morgan Hout finished hiscareer with a 20-29-1 record. School officialsannounced plans for a new stadium to bebuilt and ready for the 1989 season.

May 8, 1989Groundbreaking for the stadium took placeon LU's old practice fields.

October 14, 1989Liberty defeated Eastern Michigan University,25-24, in Ypsalanti, Mich., to post its first winagainst an NCAA Division I-A opponent.

October 21, 1989Liberty University Stadium was opened infront of a record home crowd of 12,750. TheFlames defeated Towson State, 37-18.

November 1989Liberty finished with a 7-3 record for the sec-ond season in NCAA Division I-AA. TheFlames were ranked in the NCAA Division I-AA Top 20 for four straight weeks, including aranking as high as ninth. Eric Green wasselected a second-team All-American by theAssociated Press.

January 1990Eric Green was selected to play in the Hulaand Senior Bowls, and Donald Smith wasselected to play in the Martin Luther King All-American Classic. Sam Rutigliano was alsoselected to coach in the Martin Luther KingAll-American Classic.

April 22, 1990Eric Green was drafted by the PittsburghSteelers in the first round and was the 21stpick overall in the NFL draft. Green wasLiberty's first player ever chosen in the firstround. Donald Smith was drafted by theMinnesota Vikings in the 10th round.

November 1990Liberty finished with a 7-4 record in its thirdyear of Division I-AA action. The Flames wereranked in the NCAA Division I-AA Top 20 forthree straight weeks, including a ranking ashigh as eighth. Leroy Kinard signed a free-agent contract with the N.Y. Jets.

December 1990Eric Green was selected as AFC Rookie ofthe Year, and Wayne Haddix was chosen toplay in the Pro Bowl.

1991Pat Nelson received second-team All-American honors from Associated Press andhonorable-mention All-American accoladesfrom The Sports Network.

May 1992Pat Nelson signed a free agent contract withthe New York Jets, and Sebastian Barrie alsosigned as a free agent with the Green BayPackers.

November 1992Liberty finished the 1992 season with a 7-4mark. The Flames were ranked 19th in thenation at the NCAA I-AA level by the NCAAPoll.

March 1993George Nimako was drafted in the fourthround by Toronto of the Canadian FootballLeague.

1994James McKnight signed a free agent contractwith the Seattle Seahawks, and DwayneCarswell also signed as a free agent with theDenver Broncos.

November 1995Liberty finished the 1995 season with an 8-3mark. The Flames were ranked 19th in thenation at the I-AA level by the FootballGazette and 27th by The Sports NetworkPoll.

1996The Flames were preseason ranked as highas ninth, but finished with a 5-6 record due

to injuries. Damon Bomar was named third-team All-American, and Jesse Riley andCraig Henry were selected to the FootballGazette's honorable-mention All-Americanteam.

1997The Flames finished the season with a 9-2record, tying the school record for most winsin a season. They were ranked number-19,20, and 21 by The ESPN/USA Today Poll,The Sports Network and the FootballGazette. The defense led the nation inturnovers forced with 40 and was second inturnover margin.

December 1997Rodney Degrate was named third-team All-American by The Sports Network and sec-ond-team All-American by the FootballGazette. Jesse Riley was named second-team All-American by the Football Gazette.Torrey Rush and Jerome Wicker were namedhonorable-mention All-Americans by theFootball Gazette. Jarrod Everson was namedCoSIDA/GTE Academic All-American secondteam, the first since 1982 and LU's first at theNCAA Division I-AA level.

January 1998Dwayne Carswell, captain of the specialteams for the Denver Broncos, became thefirst Liberty football player to play and win theNFL Super Bowl.

April 1998Ben Anderson signed a free agent contractwith the New York Giants, and AndrewMcFadden and Trey Sartin both signed freeagent contracts with the Indianapolis Colts.

November, 1998Jesse Riley became Liberty's first AssociatedPress first-team All-American and was alsoselected third-team All-American by theFootball Gazette. Jarrod Everson becameLiberty's first football player to be named a

CoSIDA/GTE Academic All-American andfirst two-time selection. He was also namedto the inaugural NACDA Academic All-Starteam.

January 1999Dwayne Carswell, captain ofthe special teams for theDenver Broncos, becamethe first Liberty footballplayer to play and winhis second straightNFL Super Bowl.

May 1999Rodney Degratesigned a freeagent contractwith the Toronto Argonauts ofthe Canadian Football League.

January 13, 2000Sam Rutigliano, the winningestcoach in the football program'shistory, announced his retire-ment. Rutigliano posted a 67-53record during his 11-year tenure atthe helm of the Flames' football program.

February 18, 2000Ken Karcher was announced as the sixthhead coach in the history of the football pro-gram.

March 2000Torrey Rush singed a free agent contract withthe Barcelona Dragons of the NFL Europeleague.

May 23, 2001Liberty announced that the football programwould be joining the Big South Conferencewith competition set to begin during the 2002season.

April 2002Biff Parson signed a free agent contract with

the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CanadianFootball League.

October 5, 2002Liberty and Gardner-Webb play the first-everBig South Conference football game inLynchburg, Va., with Gardner-Webb walkingaway with a 31-21 victory.

October 19, 2002Liberty wins its first-ever Big South

Conference game with a 31-17 vic-tory over Charleston Southern in

Lynchburg, Va.

December 16, 2002Liberty places four players on the first-everBig South Conference first-team all-confer-ence team and one on the second-team all-

conference squad.

October 29, 2003Aaron DeBerry was selected to partici-

pate in the 2004 I-AA All-StarClassic, hosted by The FootballNetwork.

November 15, 2003Liberty defeats Coastal Carolina, 38-21, andposts its first-ever winning record in BigSouth Conference play as the Flames finishsecond in the league with a 3-1 record.

December 9, 2003Dre Barnes becomes the first player in schoolhistory to be named Big South OffensivePlayer of the Year, while Barnes is joined byfive other members on the first-team all-con-ference squad and three other on the sec-ond-team all-conference team.

December 3, 2004Jay Cline was named to the CoSIDA/ESPNThe Magazine Academic All-American ® sec-ond team, becoming the second football play-er and the ninth student-athlete in school his-tory to be named an Academic All-American.

April 25, 2005Sam Gado signed a free agent contract withKansas City Chiefs of the National FootballLeague.

November 30, 2005Zach Terrell becomes the first player inschool history to be named Big SouthFreshman of the Year, while Terrell is joinedby six other players on the Big South all-con-ference team.

Decemeber 2, 2005Danny Rocco was announced as the seventhhead coach in history of the football program.
