BRYAN Last year, a very strong
Wauseon basketball team slipped up just
once in NWOAL league action and it cost
them the title. A 39-34 loss to Archbold
in January relegated the Indians to second
place as the Blue Streaks went on to post
an unbeaten NWOAL record and claim the
title.
This years squad has traveled a much
different path. The team battled and
fought through an up and down 12-9 sea-
son fraught with crests of good results in-
terspersed with periods of adversity. But
following a loss to a very good Archbold
team in late January, the Indians put to-
gether a good run of form over the past six
games highlighted with impressive NWOAL
road wins against Delta and Evergreen. It was against this back drop that the
Wauseon Indians walked into a crowded
Bryan High School gymnasium last Fri-
day in a winner take all game for at least a
share of the NWOAL championship againstthe Bears. Meanwhile, fteen miles to the
east in Archbold, the Blue Streaks, tied
with Wauseon and Bryan for rst place
thanks to a loss to the Bears earlier in
the season, faced off against an Evergreen
team looking for a little redemption after
the Indianss twenty-two point win the
week before. A Viking win would make
the Wauseon-Bryan winner the outright
NWOAL champion.
Big games produce big moments. And
this game would provide plenty of them.
Following a beautiful rendition of the
National Anthem by Bryans Lifeshine sing-
ers, the Wauseon students did their Step
on the Starter cheer and the game tipped
off. The rst quarter was a nip and tuck af-
fair with Bryan jumping out 5-2 on Austin
Schimmoellers three pointer. Noah Castle
responded for Wauseon taking a Michael
Hammons feed underneath and drawing
a foul on the eld goal for the three point
play. Collin Bzovis step through move in
the lane put the Indians on top 7-5 and aminute later he banked another home to
put Wauseon up four. Bryan baskets by
Jason Hug and Jake Jones tied the game
up at nine. With the clock winding down
in the quarter, Castle had the ball in the
post and kicked it out to Kris Boysel for the
open jumper and the Indians led 11-9 af ter
one period of action.
After an evenly played rst quarter,
Wauseon seized control of the game witha 10-0 run to start the second. Bryans
shooters went cold and eld goals by Cas-
tle, Hammons, Boysel, and Bzovi gave the
Indians a 19-9 lead. The Bears didnt score
until 2:39 left in the half when Sean Cull-
er connected on a long three point shot.
But Indian sophomore Zac Robinson an-
swered with a three of his own to push the
lead back to ten. With less then twenty-
ve seconds to go in the half, Boysel gave
Wauseon their biggest lead of the night at
25-14 with a three of his own. Thomas
Martins last second basket for Bryan cut
the lead to 25-16 at the half. The Indians shot over 70% in the rst
half, including two for three from behind
the three point arc, and held Bryans topscorers Austin Schimmoeller and Sean
Culler to just three points each on defense.Bryans shots werent falling and the In-
dians defense kept the Bears from getting
quality shots.I thought early on we did a nice job of
limiting their good looks from the perim-eter, commented Wauseon head coach
Chad Burt. That was a focus of our gameplan as we knew they had a number of
guys capable of getting hot from the pe-
rimeter.Sixteen minutes down; sixteen minutes
to go.Austin Martins three out of the gate
signaled that Bryan wasnt just going to goaway. The Bears came out pressing and
once the Indians brought the ball past half
court Wauseon called a quick timeout thir-
ty seconds in to talk about it. Out of thetimeout, Zac Robinsons mid range jumpermade it 27-19 but Martin got deep into the
baseline to score against Noah Castle anddraw the foul. Martins free throw brought
Bryan back within ve. The Indians then
came up with a couple defensive gems.Castle blocked a Thomas Martin shot to
keep the Bears from drawing closer. A fewseconds later Michael Hammons nearly
came up with a steal but he couldnt keepcontrol of the ball and the possession
stayed with Bryan.
The Bears could not capitalize thoughso Wauseon went on offense. Kris Boy-
sels driving layup all but went in but Bry-an grabbed the rebound. Schimmoeller
knocked down a three and the Indian lead
was now just two at 27-25. Wauseon then
broke through the Bryan press with Col-lin Bzovi leading a three on one break tothe basket. Bzovi fed Castle who broke a
three minute Indian scoring drought withhis layup to put the Wauseon lead back to
four. Jake Jones launched a three on Bry-
ans next trip down but the ball bouncedoff and ended up out of bounds back to
Wauseon.Wauseon pushed the lead back out to
ten on eld goals by Bzovi and Hammonsalong with two Hammons free throws.
Austin Martin and Schimmoeller both
scored late baskets for Bryan while IndianKris Boysel split a pair of free throws and
Wauseon took a 36-29 lead into the nalquarter.
With the home crowd urging the Bearson, Bryan made a second run at the Indi-
ans in the fourth quarter. After a Bzovi
free throw, Schimmoeller scored and wasfouled by Hammons. The junior hit the
free throw and Bryan was again within veat 37-32. Bryan stole the ball back and
Jones drew a foul on his layup attemptfrom Castle. But Jones didnt convert the
free throws and Hammons came down
with the rebound for Wauseon. Hammonshad his shot blocked by Thomas Mar-
tin on Wauseons offensive trip and backcame the Bears. Schimmoeller couldnt
hit from three point range and Hammonsagain hauled in the rebound. Bryan edged
closer on Thomas Martins pull up bank
shot and pressed the Indians. Wauseonbroke the pressure as Bzovi crossed half
court, circled past Bryans Jordan Spiess,
and charged towards the basket and drewa foul on the shot. The senior hit one oftwo and Wauseon led 38-34.
After Bryan inbounded the ball, Cullersprang free cutting down the lane and Aus-tin Martin slid a pass across the lane tothe junior for the layup to cut the Wauseonlead to two. Back came the Indians. Ham-mons curled back to take Bzovis inboundpass and drove hard to the basket to scoreand draw a blocking call on Jake Jones.Hammons hit the free throw and Wauseonled 41-36.
The Indians then nearly came up witha steal as Dugan Shadbolt poked the ballaway from Culler but Schimmoeller savedthe Bears by stepping in and grabbing it.Austin Martin then tried a left hand run-ner that rolled off. Schimmoeller againcame up with the ball in heavy trafc
underneath and tried to clear back outfront. But the ball skipped past a pair ofBryan players across the halfcourt lineand the Bears turned the ball back over toWauseon.
Hammons ried an entry pass down toBzovi who turned and red at the basketand Schimmoeller was whistled for a foul.Bzovi split the pair and Wauseon was up42-36. Bryan had another chance to cutinto the lead but Schimmoellers left wingrunner went in and out and Hammonscleared the board for Wauseon. The se-nior forward then took a Zac Robinsoncrosscourt pass and beat Austin Martinto the baseline, cut left at the basket, andbanked home the shot for an eight pointWauseon lead.
We knew at halftime that they weregoing to come out and play with a lot of
urgency, Coach Burt said. Against Ever-green, they were down 24 at half and cutit to 3 in the 4th quarter before eventuallylosing by 5. I thought that they really cameout and played with energy in the 2nd halfand had us on our heels with their pres-sure at times. We were able to maintainour poise, make some big plays late, andget to the foul line and knock down somefree throws to pull out the win.
Bzovi delivered the nal dagger withunder two and half minutes to go on a putback basket from his own miss and addeda free throw from the foul on the play togive the Indians a 47-36 lead. Wauseonhit nine of fourteen free throws in the -nal two minutes to close out the game and
secure a share of the NWOAL title with a56-47 win.
The Indians shot very well from the
eld, 18 for 33- 55%. From the free throwline, Wauseon went 18 for 29. Defensively,
Wauseon held Bryan to just 18 for 53- 34%from the eld. The Bears did make seven
of eighteen three point attempts and their
press helped force 15 Indian turnovers tohelp them climb back into the game.
Collin Bzovi led all scorers on the nightwith 17 points while Michael Hammons
chipped in with 11. Hammons also cameup with a huge night on the defensive end
and helped the Indians control the boards.
Austin Schimmoeller had 16 for Bryan-13 coming in the second half.
With the win, Wauseon are co-NWOALchampions with Archbold as the Blue
Streaks defeated Evergreen Friday night
61-53 and the team held up their newlywon hardware in the post game celebra-
tion. A great win for the Indians and agood nish to the season.
I really think that we are playing ourbest basketball of the season right now,
Coach Burt said about the teams late sea-son form. We have a mix of younger play-
ers and seniors, and sometimes that takes
a team a while to really gure out roles andhow to play together as a team. I think
that we are playing very unselshly rightnow, which has been a major factor in our
success. I also believe that we are under-standing how important the defensive end
of the oor is and getting critical stops on
defense when we need to.Now, its on to sectionals as Wauseon
will have played Northern Buckeye Confer-
ence champion Otsego last night in Swan-ton. A win last night would advance theIndians to the sectional nal this Friday
night in Swanton against the winner of the
Deance-Eastwood game.Wauseon (56): Collin Bzovi 17 points,

Wauseon Claims Share Of NWOAL Title After 56-47 Win At Bryan

BRYAN Bryans JV Bears used a 7-0
run to break open a close rst quarter
and went on to defeat Wauseon 50-36 in
NWOAL action on Friday February 22nd.
There was plenty of offense in the rst
quarter as Zach Johnsons eld goal put
the Indians on top early. Both teams trad-
ed the lead back and forth before Alec Bost
tied the game at 11 with a three pointer for
Wauseon. But Bryans Bailey Martin an-
swered right back with a three of his own
and the Bears never trailed from there.
Bryan scored 11 of the nal 13 points of
the quarter to claim a 22-13 lead after one
quarter.
Wauseon would only get as close as
seven points in the second quarter on a
Johnson eld goal with 3:46 in the half.
Corbin Garzas basket with under 5 sec-
onds in the half rounded out rst half
scoring and Bryan led 28-19.
The Bears came out hitting on all cyl-
inders in the third quarter, scoring the
rst eight points and put the game out of
reach. Bryan expanded the lead to nine-
teen and later twenty in the quarter before
Wauseon pulled closer at the end. A eld
goal by Johnson and Austin Bachmans
free throw brought the Indians within 46-
28. Wauseon outscored Bryan 8-4 in the
nal period to account for the nal margin
of victory for the Bears at 50-36.

BOWLING GREEN The Road to Columbus continues
for the Wauseon Indians, although the February 22 and23 Bowling Green Districts pared back the participants
by two.
Gage Campbell, Wade Hodges, Jacob Whitcomb, Aar-
on Schuette and Zane Krall cleared the D-II Sectionals to
make it to the District meets, but the tougher competi-
tion proved to be too much for Campbell and Whitcomb.
Campbell bowed out in the consolation rounds while
Whitcomb battled six opponents to a fth place nish in
the 132.
Hodges took third place overall, and held a perfect
slate with the exception of a 4-2 setback by decision in
his third match. Schuette ran the table in the 160, as
did Krall in the 220. Of note was the 220 champion-
ship round between Krall and Bailey Faust of Lexington.
The match, a 5-4 win by Krall continued his undefeated
streak in the postseason, but broke the streak of Kralls
postseason wins by pinfall at seven.
Hodges, Schuette and Krall advance to the D-II State
competition at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus. The event runs from February 28 through March 2.
