Psychotherapeutic Reiki
By Richard Curtin, Psy.D.
At the heart of this approach is the position that psychological
symptoms and conditions are organized and maintained by ki (subtle
energy) in the human energy field and are stored and carried in the
physical body.
Traditional psychotherapeutic approaches do not address subtle
energy and they tend to downplay or ignore the role the body plays in
symptom formation. Traditional approaches do not seek to treat the
energy blocks that underlie the effects of negative conditioning, stress
and trauma nor do they do enough to promote awareness of a symptom’s interconnected
parts: energetic, mental, emotional, behavioral and physical.
Psychotherapeutic Reiki is an approach with interventions that bring systematic attention to
the relationship between the body and the mind, that utilize Reiki energy treatments to work
directly on blockages in the human energy field in order to modify conditioning and release
held trauma energy.
The treatment of psychological problems and conditions in the practice of Psychotherapeutic
Reiki is organized around four treatment tasks; Practicing Presence, Exploring the Body-
mind, Releasing and Clearing Energy Blocks and Installing Corrective Experience.
Practicing Presence
The first task, Practicing Presence, focuses on the relationship clients have towards their
symptoms. Although it is understandable to want to minimize, deny or distance ourselves
from our symptoms out of judgment, fear or pain, in many cases this only serves to intensify
them and obscure their meaning. Practicing Presence involves the use of techniques for
helping clients to open to their symptoms in a non-judgmental and accepting manner while
receiving Reiki. A basic technique for Practicing Presence is the Noticing, Allowing, Opening
and Relaxing exercise. (NAOR)
Psychotherapeutic Reiki, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012
2
While giving the client Reiki have them focus on the presenting problem or primary
symptom. Instruct them to bring their attention to the present and notice any bodily
sensations, images, thoughts or emotions that arise. Instruct them to experience these
symptoms as fully as they can while allowing these symptoms to be just as they are. As the
client opens to their symptoms have them pay attention to any resistance that arises and try
to let it go. Encourage them to breathe slowly, deeply, evenly, and relax around their
symptoms.
This exercise helps clients to open to their symptoms, explore them more fully, decrease the
fear they have around them and increase their insight and sense of control over them.
Paradoxically, turning towards our symptoms and embracing them can help to diminish and
transform them.
Exploring the Body-Mind
Exploring the body-mind takes being present a step
further by investigating the client’s symptom picture more
fully. While the client is receiving Reiki we explore the
origin and meaning of his symptoms and define the
nature of his interconnected parts: physical, emotional,
mental, relational, and spiritual. A basic technique for exploring the body-mind is the
Exploration and Release Technique.
Mind and emotion exist in every cell of the body which means that the unreleased and
unresolved effects of traumatic experience may be lodged anywhere in the body. Reiki can
be used to investigate areas of unreleased trauma, bring out their meaning and assist in their
release. When you find an area of tension, pain or held energy, give Reiki to it while
instructing the client to breathe deeply, slowly and evenly. Have the client hold an attitude of
relaxed attention and acceptance while they allow their intuition to bring to mind any
thoughts, images, memories or feelings being held in this part of the body.
Releasing and Clearing Energy Blocks
This task involves the use of techniques for letting go of held trauma energy, painful
memories, thought and emotions and for releasing the energy charge underlying them. A
basic technique for this task is the Mental-Emotional Release Technique
Psychotherapeutic Reiki, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012
3
This technique is adapted from Weston (1998). To begin, the therapist has the client lie on
his/her back on the massage table. The therapist then has the client pick a color and imagine
this color under the therapist’s hands, which are placed on the client’s heart chakra and solar
plexus. (The heart chakra is the emotional center and the solar plexus is an energy center
relating to the mind and mental activity.) The therapist gives the instruction to the client to
bring to mind a troubling memory, thought, or feeling that causes intense emotion. As
memory and feeling come up, the client is instructed to send these reactions into the
therapist’s hands. As the client does this, the therapist will feel heat coming into his/her
hands. As the client sends the mental and emotional reactions into the therapist’s hands, the
client will sense that the color under the therapist’s hands is beginning to fade to white and
this is an indicator that release is occurring. At times as a release is progressing, the client
may have another memory or feeling come up and when this occurs, the therapist should
encourage the client to send this new reaction into his/her hands. Usually after 10 to 20
minutes, the client has released as much of the charge as they are going to at this session.
After discharging strong emotion, many people feel an energetic void where their troubling
thoughts or feelings had been stored in the body and it is important for the therapist to give
Reiki to fill this void. It may take repeated sessions to resolve a serious traumatic memory,
but often progress is noted after only one session.
Installing Corrective Experience
The fourth task, Installing Corrective Experience, involves the use of techniques for starting
to think, feel and act differently and with positive intention. Techniques in this category seek
to input new information into the client’s body-mind and energy field.
After clients have released blockages, this new information is
installed in the form of affirmations, positive images, successful
outcomes, corrective thoughts and beliefs and positive feelings that
promote states of healing, happiness, contentment and well-being.
We replace painful thoughts, judgments and beliefs with positive, loving and compassionate
messages. A basic technique for installing corrective experience is the Sei He Ki technique.
Dr. Usui, the founder of Reiki, taught particular hand positions to be used when installing
information in a client’s field. This technique requires the use of the three Reiki level two
symbols. After placing these symbols in his hands, the therapist places his dominant hand
on the back of the client’s head and his non-dominant hand on the client’s forehead. The
therapist keeps his hands there for two or three minutes while both he and the client silently

repeat the new information they wish to install. Then, the therapist removes his non-
dominant hand from the client’s forehead and gives Reiki to the back of the client’s head.

The Wondrous Journey into the Depth of Our Being
By Ilie Cioara
Each human being on planet Earth is – consciously or unconsciously – searching for
happiness with unlimited persistence and greed. Happiness appears as a mirage; we try
countless ways in order to find it in the
external world, with perseverance and
determination; nevertheless, each time,
the desired happiness finally results in
disappointing delusion.
Other, more subjective individuals turn to their inner world; in this case as well, their thirst for
happiness is satisfied by sheer deceitful imagination. In each of our attempts to search for it,
we start from what we know or imagine. Such happiness is always motivated by an object we
anticipate or desire.
True happiness ensues indirectly. It always appears in a state of non-search. Practically, we
do not know what happiness is, but, when the mind is completely silent, in a state of total
passiveness, our whole being experiences harmony. In this state, as complete beings,
integrated into Life, we are overwhelmed with an immense Joy and Happiness without
cause.
Only when It appears as a real experience can we truly know Happiness and Its constant
freshness, without turning It into a memory. Ever renewing itself, It is a natural gift offered to
the individual who is free from his time-space structure. Only in this way do we discover the
true Happiness that the wandering mind of the conditioned man has been searching for
throughout the millennia.
****
The moment we encounter true Happiness, we are in fact outside time and space. The “ego”
– with its intrinsic duality – has completely disappeared.
The Wondrous Journey into the Depth of Our Being, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012
2
If the “ego” does not exist anymore, who can evaluate this happy fulfillment?
In that moment, the Sacred within us, also existent in the whole universe, becomes one
“Whole” and a Unique movement, in a permanent renewal.
Do we truly experience this union, or do we merely understand it intellectually? You alone
can answer this question.
Each human being – from the moment of birth until the moment of the so-called death –
persistently searches for this mysterious Happiness. Unfortunately, most people make the
mistake of searching for it with the thinking mind.
Because Happiness has no motivations, It is not part of the limited world. Its nature is infinite;
therefore the knowing mind cannot encounter It, or understand It, or imagine It.
Happiness comes to us by Itself, and It envelops our whole being when the mind becomes
humble and silent, as it has understood its inability to encounter the Unknown.
Lucid Attention – with Its flashes – dissipates all the darkness, as well as the baggage of the
dysfunctional mind.
In the empty space of peace or no-mind, our being is extended into Infinity; in that moment,
the Divinity within us reveals we are one with the Source of the Sacred. In conclusion, let us
add that in the environment of “Pure Consciousness”, Happiness is present as a natural
fulfillment and It is unlike anything that can be found in this perishable world.
****
The Love dimension is known by different names: Truth, Reality, God, Immensity, the Infinite,
Intelligence etc.
The very meaning of the words which define it express the fact that this dimension has no
bounds.
In this dimension, no faiths, ideals, desires or any such similar ideas can exist, as they are
encountered in the limited dimension. For this reason, in this wondrous climate there is no
struggle, contradictions, confusion, pain, hate etc.
The Wondrous Journey into the Depth of Our Being, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012
3
Boundlessness cannot be comprehended by imagination or by
thought; there is nothing we can say about it. We can only
describe and explain that which our mind can encompass. In the
face of Limitlessness, the mind is poor, completely unable to
understand it. In fact, the moment
Immensity affirms itself within us, as a living state of the integral human being, the “ego”
dimension and its limited way of expression does not exist anymore.
There is not much we can say about the experience of living in the dimension of Love.
Nevertheless, we will try to express certain feelings and states of being encountered in this
state.
In complete union with Love, we are perfect peace, we live total freedom; the very notion of
“self” is missing, although we are endowed with a clarity and sensitivity of the mind such as
we have never encountered in the limited realm of thinking.
By melting with silence, we become that silence, equilibrium and harmony, free from duality:
our being is extended into Infinity. Practically, by experiencing “psychological nothingness”,
the “ego” disappears and, in its place, Immensity envelops us wholly and we become one
with It. Integrated into the Great Cosmic Energy, we continue to exist as a state of
superconsciousness.
Encountering the Boundless
It is impossible to embrace and comprehend the
Infinite Universe
With the limited “ego”;
All is experienced in total silence,
Free from time – the being and the mind are newly born.
Thus, I am Immensity, in perpetual movement,
In Unity with the Whole – a creative structure –
I see, feel and act in perfect union with the Sacred,
I use language to describe Wisdom.
One with the Boundless, I am Happiness,
A divine gift, with no support in the thought process;
The Wondrous Journey into the Depth of Our Being, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012
4
Happiness has no motives – a supreme satisfaction,
To which, consciously or unconsciously, each human being aspires.
****
The Freshness of Life
Everything in the Universe is in constant movement,
What is now – in a flash – is consumed and dies,
The old moment is replaced with the new, appearing rhythmically,
A constant succession – inviting us to know ourselves.
Yesterday and the thousands of yesterdays
Created our lives of fiction: lies, fear, madness;
All that was – is dead – worthless in the present,
The moment – a precious mystery – integrates us into reality.
****
Intuition is that capacity of the Divinity of our being to warn or to direct us in a perfect way
through lightning-like impulses. It is a surprise and an instant mystery. It has no connection
with the conditioned mind. On the contrary, it reveals itself to us only in the absence of
thinking. We can never, in any way, anticipate its appearance. It cannot be cultivated and we
cannot invoke it with the help of a certain formula.
Our only duty is to create a favorable climate in
which Intuition can reveal itself, by itself. The only
obstacle, obstructing its mysterious presence, is
the “ego” and its whole memory baggage – a
fictitious entity. When we see it as it is – with the
help of lucid Attention – the “ego” disappears
spontaneously.
“Psychological emptiness” ensues naturally; our whole being, in perfect harmony and inner
simplicity, transcends from the finite world into Boundlessness. In a state of “Pure
Consciousness”, intuitive responses are mirrored onto the luminous screen of
consciousness.
The Wondrous Journey into the Depth of Our Being, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012
5
We can explain this state in the right words only when we are requested to do so, in order to
provide a better understanding of life phenomena.
These intuitive impulses can reveal to us: either momentary dangers, threatening our lives,
or hidden, concealed truths, or small realizations regarding our everyday existence.
Happy indeed is the man who, detached from the “self”, abandons himself to the will of
Divinity, offering himself as an instrument through which the Divine affirms Its Sacred
guidance.

Healing Energy Evolution
By Sadao Hayano, Reiki and Medical Qigong Therapist
Abstract
13.7 Billion years after the Big Bang, Charles Darwin, in 1858, presented his Theory of
Evolution. Homo Sapiens had been walking upright and speaking language 195,000 years
ago. Homo Sapiens Sapiens (modern humans) had then appeared 100,000 years ago and
were physically identical to us except that their brain cells were not yet evolved to the present
human level. This article examines the functions of neurons and explains their relationship
with energy healing practices such as Reiki, Qigong, Huna, etc. Subjects we will discuss in
this article include the Mirror Neuron, the New Born Neuron, the Neurotransmitter, the Third
Eye and the Blood-Brain Barrier, etc.
These topics are relatively recent scientific discoveries, having taken place only within the
last 40 years, largely due to the capability of modern imaging technologies such as Magnetic
Resonance Imaging (MRI). Our minds are formed of brain cell networks. Our common
modern health issues such as cardiac arrest are, in developed countries, are related largely
to the mind rather than to other factors. The energy practitioner will see strong scientific
validity on our energy healing algorithm and will discover additional scientific foundation for
Alternative Medicine.
1. Charles Darwin’s Theory
Charles Darwin’s Discovery
The Healing Energy of Reiki, Qigong, etc. is being studied in this article. Evolution at the
human brain level will be shown to be a deeper mechanism of those same evolutionary
principles revealed in Charles Darwin’s work; see “The Origin of Species” by Charles Darwin,
1858. In this book, he describes and proves the so called ‘Theory of Evolution by Natural
Selection’.
Here we are approaching this theory in two steps to simplify discussion -- ‘The theory of
evolution’ and ‘The theory of natural selection’. For the purposes of this article, we will follow
Healing Energy Evolution, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012
2
the course outlined in a well-accepted book “Introducing Evolution” by D Evans & H Selina,
Totem Book, 2010.
The Theory of Evolution
Theory of Evolution simply states the fact that ‘species can change’.
After the Big Bang took place 13.7 billion years ago, the first organic molecules only
appeared on Earth 9.7 billion years later and it is at this point that we witness the beginning
of the evolution. From fossil and scientific research, biologists have concluded that the first
cells appeared 3.5 billion years ago. Every species on Earth is descended from this single
common ancestor. Eventually the great diversity of different living creatures we know today
descended from those cells by assuming new forms in an evolutionary process.
The modern human (Homo Sapiens Sapiens) was descended from a species of ape and
appeared in Africa 100,000 years ago. All living beings carry a record of their descent in their
genes and we are able to trace that record. Though fossils indicate that these earliest
modern humans were physically identical to us, their brain cells took considerably longer to
evolve and develop to reach the complexity and sophistication of the modern human.
The Theory of Natural Selection
The second step is the theory of natural selection. Darwin further confirmed here ‘Natural
selection in species happens whenever the following two conditions are in place.’ The two
conditions are: 1. There exists a population of things that make copies of themselves.
However this replication process is not 100 % perfect. 2. Copying errors provide an
opportunity for some offspring to survive more effectively than others and these survivors are
then the ones which are able to make copies of themselves.
Example: The ancestor of the woodpecker was a bird with a very small beak. One day, she
had an offspring with a slightly longer beak. That individual was able to make very small
indentations in bark with this beak and therefore to reach the extra insect or two. After
generations, the longer beak becomes the norm of the whole population as those with
shorter beaks are less able to compete and reproduce.
Scientists generally agree that most evolutionary adaptations are gradual, just as Darwin
theorized, but some believe that they can appear within a single generation.
Healing Energy Evolution, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012
3
The HOX Gene (from Chip Walter’s book)
According to Darwin, all evolutionary changes occurred gradually, but the fossil record does
not always support this view. Chip Walter included anomalous examples of evolution in his
book, “Thumbs, Toes, and Tears” (Walker & Company, 2006). Specifically, HOX genes are
one such natural selection example. W. McGinnis and others reported it originally in the
paper, "A conserved DNA sequence in homoeotic genes of the Drosophila Antennapedia and
bithorax complexes", McGinnis W; Levine M, Hafen E, Kuroiwa A, Gehring W, Nature 308
(5958): 428–33 (1984).
HOX Genes act as master ‘switches’, which flip other strings of genes on and off. Since
McGinnis’ discovery and those of others, scientists have found HOX genes in every existing
animal, including humans. If certain adaptations improve a creature’s chances of survival,
they would tend to spread through the rest of the gene pool. Since HOX genes control
masses of other genes, the results can be dramatic when HOX genes mutate. Changes
appear almost instantly. Had our ancestor apes been forced to do their walking on their
knuckles, they would not have survived the threat of predators. Walking upright was the best
way to survive. Homo Habilis, the first of our genus, walked upright 2 million years ago.
But upright walking accomplished even more than that. It also changed the way we looked
and how we saw the world from a higher physical position and it also affected our behavior in
deeply fundamental ways. In other words, this erect posture not only shaped a new kind of
body, it also shaped a new kind of mind. Homo Sapience had evolved through natural
selection and with it the development of language 195,000 years ago, for instance.
2. Energizing Brain
Memory Process
Let’s examine the brain memory process of the present day human. The primary function of
the hippocampus, located in the center of our brain, is memory management – memory
formation and recall. Here is a brief description of the hippocampus function.
The raw information received in the cerebrum from the various body senses such as seeing,
hearing, smelling, tasting, touching, feeling, etc. is transmitted to the hippocampus for
evaluation. The hippocampus judges the content and quality of the raw information and
pastes its earmarks on the raw information. Then depending on the earmarks from the
evaluation, the hippocampus sends the results selectively to the various memory storage
Healing Energy Evolution, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012
4
parts in the brain such as Cerebral
Cortex, Cingulate Gyrus, Septal,
Amygdala and Pituitary Gland, see
Fig 1.
When a demand arises by any wish
in our mind in later time, the
hippocampus copies from this
memory storage the needed
information and adds its necessary
directive commands to it. Then, it is
transmitted to other areas of the
brain such as the cerebellum, for
example, where the necessary action can be taken to comply with the commands. This
completes one memory management cycle of hippocampus function.
Brainwave readings indicate that memory management in the hippocampus is carried out
most effectively in the brain in the Ө wave state, 4 to 8Hz, as shown in Table 1.
Brain Wave α β γ δ Ө Frequency (Hz)
8 to 13 13 to 30 30 to 100 0.5 to 4 4 to 8
Mind Relaxed Normal Concentrated
Sleep Meditation
Table 1. Brain Wave
Researchers indicate that the Ө brainwave state has the effect of inducing plasticity
(flexibility) in brain functions. The changing and increasing synapse connections are a part of
the plasticity of the brain function and the better synapse connections are largely the result of
the performance of newly born neurons. New neurons are known to be born only in the
Hippocampus, while in other areas of the brain, no more new neurons are manufactured
after our birth from a mother. Please note that the brainwave is an electrical voltage variation
caused by brain activity. We will discuss the new neurons later.
Mirror Neuron
The existence of Mirror Neurons in the premotor cortex (F5 region) in monkeys, and
subsequently in humans, was discovered in 1996 by Giacomo Rizzolatti and others; see
“Premotor cortex and the recognition of motor actions” by Rizzolatti G., Fadiga L., Gallese V.,
Healing Energy Evolution, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012
5
Fogassi L. Cogn. Brain Res., 3 (1996), 131-141.
When researchers were recording signals transmitted from neurons in F5 of the monkeys in
their Lab and a monkey was watching a researcher’s hand picking up an object, the sensors
connected to the monkey’s brain indicated that neurons in F5 were firing. They did not fire
however, when the monkey was simply seeing the object sitting there. In other words, the
monkey’s neurons in F5 were activated only when the monkey saw the researcher’s motions
with the object. And of course, the neurons in F5 were activated at times when the monkey
herself picked up an object. This means that the same neurons in F5, the mirror neurons,
fired when either the monkey sees the act performed or performs it. Hence we can conclude
that that the monkey’s brain – her mind – is seeing the researcher’s act as if it were her own
act. This indicates that the mirror neuron is used as a learning tool by copying and imitating
others. In this instance, the discovery of these mirror neurons was done by Rizzolatti. The
mirror neuron was a communication method between humans when spoken language did
not yet exist. The mirror neuron has been with the human since 1.3 million years ago in the
time of Homo Erectus.
When we see emotional movies, we experience the same emotions in ourselves. The total
estimated number of neurons in the human brain is 10¹¹, making up about 10% of total brain
cells. All neurons are exchanging information with each other all the time and this is the basic
cause of our mind being created in the brain. Our behaviors follow exactly the directives of
our own mind at each moment. The emotion is a creation of our mind.
This emotion mirroring could be utilized as an energy healing technique. Any energy healing
practitioner goes through extensive training with energy detection and feeling exercises, if
not also a rigorous scientific version of the process. The practitioner has intuitively learned to
distinguish brainwave differences between α, β, γ, δ and Ө by touching the patient on the
head or by feeling the Qi energy. Applying the mirror neuron theory then becomes a powerful
healing tool.
The New Neuron
We have mentioned already that new neurons are born in the hippocampus continually. This
fact was discovered by Peter S. Eriksson and others in 1998; see “Neurogenesis in the Adult
Human Hippocampus” by P. Eriksson, E. Perfilieva, T. Bjork-Eriksson, A. Alborn, C.
Nordborg, D. Peterson and F. Gage, www. Medicine.nature.com (1998 issue). The estimated
number of these new-born neurons is a few thousand per day depending on the age of the
person. Brain researchers have further found that these fresh new neurons effectively
Healing Energy Evolution, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012
6
increase memorizing power, reduce our stress levels, increase the brain function plasticity,
improve and exchange brain network connections, eliminate bad past memories, etc.
In 2005, Fred Gage and other scientists experimented on mice and proved that those which
went in the running wheel every night generated a larger number of new neurons in the
hippocampus; see “Exercise Enhances Learning and Hippocampal Neurogenesis in Aged
Mice” by Henriette van Praag, Tiffany Shubert, Chunmei Zhao, and Fred H. Gage, The
Journal of Neuroscience, September 21, 2005, 25(38):8680-8685.
We already knew intuitively of the importance of daily walking ourselves. The above paper is
a comprehensive scientific proof of this and provides the practitioner with yet more detailed
information.
Neurotransmitters
‘Neurotransmitters’ are chemicals in the brain which
travel from neuron to neuron through the synapse
junctions, and thus form the mind in the brain, see
Fig. 2. Brain researchers have found more than one
hundred different neurotransmitters. We will
consider a few of these in this article, Dopamine,
Serotonin, GABA, β-endorphin, etc. Please note that
each neuron cell has its own specific
neurotransmitter.
Here are brief descriptions of each chemical:
Dopamine produces the effect of ‘Feeling happy’
(Excitatory). Serotonin is for ‘Waking up’
(Excitatory). GABA is to ‘Suppress emotional
excitement’ (Inhibitory). And β-endorphin is to ‘Reduce physical pain’ (Excitatory).

Waking up Excitatory
Suppress Emotional Excitement Inhibitory
Reduce Physical Pain Excitatory
Table 2. Neurotransmitters
Healing Energy Evolution, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012

A neurotransmitter can either excite or inhibit the receiving cell as noted above. The
neurotransmitter molecules are manufactured in the neuron cell body (called the Soma), and
moves down to the synapses through the axon cable. When the brain has the correct
number of neurotransmitters, our behavior or actions are balanced mentally and physically.
When the number is skewed and out of balance, our mind becomes sick and our behavior
gets erratic. This causes neurological disorders.
Grooming among monkeys takes place daily. Grooming with their fellows has a bonding
function as well as nit picking. Grooming is a form of communication in the absence of
speech. Researchers reported that it creates a flow of a neurotransmitter, β-endorphin, in the
brain; see “Beta-endorphin concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid of monkeys are influenced
by grooming relationships” by E.B. Keverne, N.D. Martensz, B. Tuite,
Psychoneuroendocrinology vol 14, 1989.
One more example of β-endorphin production in the brain was reported by David Julius’
research team at UCSF in 1997. Capsaicin, the hot chili pepper ingredient, touching on
kidney receptors causes a short burning sensation activating β-endorphins in the brain. In
turn, these β-endorphins function to reduce physical pain in the human. When the capsaicin
receptor alone (only the receptor itself without the capsaicin attachment) in the human kidney
was intentionally heated to the 110 degree Fahrenheit temperature range, it then produced
β-endorphins in the brain; see "The capsaicin receptor: a heat-activated ion channel in the
pain pathway" by Caterina MJ, Schumacher MA, Tominaga M, Rosen TA, Levine JD, Julius
D, October 1997, Nature 389 (6653): 816–24.
Thus, the β-endorphin is manufactured in the brain, either by capsaicin touching on the
receptors or by the 110 degree temperature to which the receptors of the kidney were
subjected. Please note that the β-endorphins in the brain eliminate pain felt in the body.
When the healer touches the patient’s kidney area from outside the body, it similarly
increases the kidney temperature slightly -- enough to induce β-endorphin production in the
brain.
The Third Eye
The external environment experienced in daily life affects human functions naturally. When
the sun comes down, the brain senses it and responds with drowsiness and a tendency
towards sleep. While on the other hand, daylight wakes us up.
Healing Energy Evolution, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012

The suprachiasmatic nucleus in the
hypothalamus plays a part in this sleep wake
cycle. Light levels are sensed by our retina,
and this information is relayed to the
suprachiasmatic nucleus, which then sends
a signal to the pineal gland, see Fig. 3. This
triggers the release of melatonin, a hormone,
from the pineal gland; thus starting the sleep
cycle. When melatonin levels fall due to
increased light intensity, the pineal gland
releases serotonin, a hormone; thus starting
the waking part of the cycle.
When energy healing practitioners with empty mind place their palms on the area of the so
called third eye, located in front of the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the patient, light and
energy from the environment are blocked. The patient then becomes totally relaxed and
ready for the healing treatment. The practitioner can easily recognize this state of connection
with the patient. Learning this third eye energy maneuver skill is a critical step for the
proficient practitioner.
Blood-Brain Barrier
‘Blood-Brain Barrier’ separates circulating blood in capillaries from the neuron, see Fig.4. The
glial cells support the neuron structurally and are located in between the capillaries and the
neuron. The capillaries consist of seals around its membrane wall and the blood flowing
inside. This membrane wall and seal
restricts the diffusion of microscopic
materials in the blood into the glial.
The glial cells have ‘the transporters’
which select and transport necessary
materials from capillaries to neurons.
However, the neuron naturally
receives needed materials for the
support of healthy neurons (such as
oxygen, glucose and amino acids)
from the blood in the capillaries. The
blood in capillaries contains a variety
of materials, including bacteria which
Healing Energy Evolution, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012
9
are harmful to the neuron. The harmful materials are blocked at Blood-Brain Barrier in the
normal healthy brain.
Every mental state has a corresponding brain state. Our mind is influenced by the conditions
of our environment and by our human relationships with others. We will discuss some of the
disorders the brain can suffer from -- headache, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder
(PTSD). The dividing line between normal states and disordered states of the human mind
can sometimes be difficult to define due to differences in personalities, cultures, religions,
etc.
Brain researchers, Alon Friedman and his team, found in 1996 that when rats were put into a
brain state of a post-traumatic stress disorder, the safeguards of the blood-brain barrier went
down. Chemicals (Pyridostigmine) from the blood in the capillaries invaded to the neurons
much more easily when the function of the barrier was compromised. This created an
imbalanced state in the brains of the rats, causing erratic behavior and disorders, see
“Pyridostigmine brain penetration under stress enhances neuronal excitability and induces
early immediate transcriptional response” by Friedman, A., Kaufer-Nachum, D., Shemer, J.,
Hendler, I., Soreq, H. and Tur-Kaspa, I., Nature Medicine 2:1382-1385 (1996).
The above is another strong reason for the energy practitioner to make the patient relaxed,
so that the guard of Blood-Brain Barrier remains intact and functioning as originally designed
by evolution.
3. Mind and Heart Connection
Cardiac Arrest Recurrence
We now turn our attention to the ‘Type A Personality’ studied by Meyer Friedman and Ray
Rosenman in 1974. Type A People are defined as those who experience chronic anger, are
impatient and at risk from heart attacks. In Western countries, ‘diet and cholesterol’ have
been traditionally regarded as the major risk factors in cardiac mortality. Researchers started
to investigate other elements such as social and living conditions, stability of the country,
neighborhood cultural conditions and degrees of stress and disorder at home. These
negative conditions create nervous and hormonal imbalances in the human. The effects of
both ‘Cardiac Counseling’ and ‘Type A Behavior Counseling’ were evaluated in a controlled
experimental setting with 1013 heart attack survivors for a period of 4.5 years. The results
were that Type A Behavior Counseling reduces cardiac mortality much more effectively than
does Cardiac Counseling, as reported by M. Friedman and others in 1986; see “Alteration of
Healing Energy Evolution, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012
10
type A behavior and its effect on cardiac recurrences in post myocardial infarction patients:
Summary results of the recurrent coronary prevention project” by Meyer Friedman, Carl E.
Thoresen, James J. Gill, Diane Ulmer, Lynda H. Powell, Virginia A. Price, Byron Brown,
Leonti Thompson, David D. Rabin, William S. Breall, Edward Bourg, Richard Levy, Theodore
Dixon, American Heart Journal, v112 n4, pp653-665.
The above result can easily be interpreted as demonstrating a strong mind/heart connection
so to speak. The classical and traditional common sense assumption has required
modification as facts are revealed. Diet and cholesterol may not be the largest factors in
heart health in modern society as the mind factor could well be primary. This shift of
perspective needs to be realized and recognized by energy practitioners.
The findings of Friedman and others are summarized in Table 3 which shows the cumulative
4.5 year cardiac arrest recurrence rate determined in the above paper.

Science of Mother’s Healing
When we talk about the basic rules in natural science, such as Newton’s Law, Quantum
Physics Law, Einstein’s Relativity Law, etc., the rule in question must be confirmed to be 100
% true in the domain of its application. The proof of the rule depends heavily on
Mathematics. But in case beyond the natural sciences, the rule may not be corroborated with
100% certainty for various social reasons mentioned above. My rule is not necessarily an
acceptable truth to other individuals. One sure method of demonstrating proof in this case is
through the controlled experimental setting such as that used in the above Type A research.
The control group in Table 3 is ‘Received No Counseling’ while the experimental group is
‘Received Cardiac Counseling’ and ‘Received Cardiac Counseling & Type A counseling’.
We cannot see, hear nor touch Qi energy. However, we know how to feel Qi in between our
own two palms. The energy practitioner teaches new students the method for feeling Qi. The

teacher makes the students extend this ‘sensing’ skill to all parts of the body and the
environment beyond the body. Thus, to start with, Qi was defined on the bases of this
individual sensing and feeling. Qi energy exists in our mind and excites it. A healer projects
Qi energy by a strong healing intension as with Qigong or, in contrast, the healer projects Qi
through her empty mind with no intention at all as sometimes with Reiki. Once again, Qi
energy always fills the human body and the Universal environment.
The mother hugs and touches the child’s head, knee, hand when the child falls. The mother
talks, listens, behaves and is thoroughly trusted by the child who has no roadblock to
accepting the mother and, in fact, the child will be cured. The mother has all the respect and
talent needed to do Qi energy healing, and to initiate and to participate in micro evolution
through the law of natural selection. The mother’s mind controls Qi; the Qi heals the child
body and that Qi is the total expression of the mother’s mind and healing energy; see

Reiki Entering the Medical Field
By Sufani Garza
Reiki is an ancient form of healing that has
been done all over the world under many
various names, however, the term Reiki is
Japanese meaning ‘consciously aware life
force energy.’ Reiki is on the rise and what was
once a foreign name to most people, is now
recognized when spoken, although many still
have never had a session of Reiki themselves.
Reiki is a practice of a certified practitioner
laying her hands on a fully clothed client, using a reduced set of hand positions covering the
length of the body organs, nerves, bones and tissue. During that time they are focusing their
intent to give healing energy to the client for the client’s higher purpose.
Reiki has been an elusive healing art for some time with the medical profession being less
than supportive as a result of having no scientific data to show why a person heals from
Reiki. Relations have since developed which has led to scientific data to explain that Reiki is
not a placebo effect, although the mind enters into everything (the will to be well is a factor in
whether a person’s immune system will resist incoming interference). But doctors, physicists
and scientists have found that the effects of Reiki are measurable with the same equipment
used in hospitals. Biologically, electromagnetic frequencies optimal for stimulating tissue
repair is done with an extremely low frequency of energy called the ELF. Bone growth
requires 7 Hz, ligament repair 10 Hz, capillary formation 15 Hz. Dr. John Zimmerman
measured the magnetic field of Reiki practitioners and found that their magnetic field ranged
from 0.3 - 30Hz, the same range associated with healthy tissue and organs.
The FDA approved pulsing Electromagnetic Field Therapy to stimulate bone growth in bone
fractures and breaks at a frequency of 7Hz- the same as, and sometimes lower than, the
electrical pulse coming from a Reiki practitioner. Working with Electrocardiograms,
Electrocephalograms and working with the biomagnetic field has been in use in the medical
profession since the 1920s, so working with energy fields is measurable, and nothing new.
Reiki Entering the Medical Field, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012
2
Researcher Robert C. Beck used and EEG to measure
the brain waves of Reiki practitioners in the act of
healing and found that their brain waves averaged 7.8 -
8.0 Hz. Reiki practitioners call to the universal energy
and ground and center themselves to the earth before
they begin and draw on that energy. Robert found it
interesting that when in the healing practice their energy
level synchronized with the earth’s electromagnetic spectrum. It is also interesting that a
heart in the act of compassion has an electromagnetic field 100 times larger than the brain
and extends fifteen feet from the body. Reiki practitioners enter the healing profession
because they want to help others, and that in itself is a compassionate act.
The benefits of Reiki are not just a placebo effect, meaning all in the mind of the receiver. A
recent study was done on mice in a lab that had been injected with cancer with a fatality rate
expected in 14-27 days from the time of injection. Some of the mice were given thirty minute
Reiki sessions for thirty days. The mice that were given Reiki developed a blackened area,
the cancer ulcerated, imploded and closed. The mice with no Reiki treatment had a 100%
death rate. The mice that survived were then re-injected with cancer and their body retained
the immune response to fight the cancer and they lived out their normal life span. Reiki not
only stimulates the healing of bones, tissue, organs and nerves through scientifically
measurable electrical charges emitted from the human Reiki practitioner, but the body mind
remembers the immune response and fights off the same disease.
Hospitals are increasingly looking into offering Reiki to patients in the hospitals due to these
measurable tests and Reiki will, in the future, become a medical treatment offered and
legitimized by the medical profession on a wider scale. Resources: The Effect of the “Laying On of Hands” in Transplanted Breast Cancer Mice, Krinsley D. Bengston, Journal of

Dear Reiki
Advice Column for the International Reiki Community
Editor’s Note: We are happy to debut the Dear Reiki
column with this issue. Readers are invited to submit
questions for answer and discussion to [email protected].
We will select the most widely asked questions for future
issues.
IARP member and regular TRT contributor, Sufani Garza, will be answering your
questions each issue. We will also have specialty guest panelists to add additional
valuable contributions as well. Thank you, Sufi!
Dear Reiki:
Sometimes I feel as if I am taking on a lot of my clients’ negative energy and emotions into
myself. Where I work currently is not a very grounded work environment, so I feel as if I'm
struggling to protect myself from being mentally and energetically drained. I was wondering if
maybe you had some advice you could toss my way to help me out to ground before
sessions and protect myself.
A: To stay grounded you have to bring it out from within and call on Mother Nature to aid
you. Environments around us are to teach us about what we need to work on. But true
grounding comes from the thought patterns we allow to exist in our minds. If you have
noticed a toxic environment you are no longer learning from in a positive way, then your body
is telling you to take action to remove yourself from that. Focus on what you want, not what
you don't want and you will find energy will begin to return to you. Spend five minutes every
morning in a peaceful sitting position just breathing and programming your internal waters by
saying "Love & gratitude" over and over and positive thank you statements until you fall into
silence in the mind. Five minutes every day while breathing consciously will ground you.
You do not need protection because no one's energy enters without your permission.
Visualize your peace bubble around you and remember that only the energy you allow in
comes in. Most energy drains come from within. We either are doing too much, not dealing
with things and the energy to run emotionally is exhausting, or we are polluting our own

energy with negative thoughts, words or have disowned our power to create our reality.
Figure out which one you are? Love & Light!
Dear Reiki: If I receive psychic or intuitive information on a client whilst giving them a
treatment, should I pass it on? What if I am working in a Spa or more business atmosphere
or I don't know the person well to know their beliefs and if they would be open to it? What do
I do?
A: Well the first thing I would say is that it all starts with how you set up your session with the
client. For instance, if a client comes to you and you have had no initial discussion of what
you do, or had not agreed upon what will happen during the session then it could be quite
shocking to a person who has no idea that during Reiki, intuitive/psychic information comes.
This also can cause a religious conflict for someone who did not know this and is not willing
to hear it, yet who otherwise had a good session. My recommendation is that at the
beginning of each session, determine the appropriateness as well as find out what the client
would like to know. Keep your choice of words as neutral as possible for what you do. Private
practice allows all the freedom in the world yet in a business environment you must be more
conscientious of the person who was booked for you with no previous knowledge of you or
what you do and has a limited understanding of Reiki. In essence, find out what they are
there to do and get out of the session. That will tell you what you need to know and how to
proceed.
I always start by telling them what I will be doing and then tell them that during the sessions I
often get intuitive information that comes to me regarding their emotional or physical state. I
may feel heat in areas of physical problems or tingling in my bones when I sense emotional
issues that have settled in a certain part of their body. Then I simply ask, "If that occurs
would you like me to tell you?" Receive your "yes" commitment before moving into that
realm. This is most important when doing Reiki in a professional business environment
where previous conversation and interest was not developed personally and discussed with
someone like-minded.
I once did a session as an independent contractor at a fitness studio on a woman who saw
me many times for massage and heard about Reiki and the energy work and seemed very
open to it. Upon her session I received totem animals with messages, symbology and areas
of her body that were blocked and why they were having trouble. At the end of the session I
began to tell her what I received intuitively and saw her eyes freeze and then glaze over with
discomfort as I was discussing with her the totem animal and symbology. I sensed right away
Dear Reiki, The Reiki Times Vol. 16 Spring Issue 2012
3
that she did not want to hear this because it conflicted with her religious views of intuiting
information this way. I immediately stopped and ended the session politely for her. It was
very disappointing for me because we were on the verge of releasing her from her suffering
with this information. From that point onward I realized that whether in private practice or
while employed in a health facility, always explain your process and ask what they would like
receive after the session. The session could be followed by intuitive information and sharing
experiences or as simple as asking them how they feel and seeing them out. Always let the
client be in charge of their session, giving them only what they seek from you and no more.
One will only receive what they are willing to take anyway.
Dear Reiki: I have started to develop psychic senses, what do I do?
A: What is so amazing about this is that all human beings have the same senses. Yet upon
development of seeing the world in oneness and removing the veil that is so firmly placed in
between the physical realm and the spirit realm, we begin to see we are limitless in healing,
communicating, and so much more. What is important to do is to pay attention to the
messages you are receiving. As you do your work and receive messages begin to notice if
there are patterns to them so that you may better understand how the universe is speaking to
you directly through your own personal guidance system. These are the tools you will use to
become more intuitive and begin to sense things, to the simplest shifts in energy in people.
Many people in the beginning become worried about this development wondering if its
normal or they commonly say they are seeing or hearing things that are "weird." I always tell
them that there is no such thing as weird or abnormal. Yes, social programming may
say otherwise but healing work is about releasing all programming and focusing on being in
the moment and listening. Entering intuition is a dimension of silence where communication
is possible telepathically and information is given to you through light, which is information.
How you translate that information can come in many different ways and each healer is
different in how they receive their guidance. Focus on acceptance of yourself, be grateful for
the gift of guidance and be open to it as it comes. To train yourself with the information, if you
have a client with whom it is appropriate to share this type of information (they have either
asked or have given their encouragement for sharing), tell the client what you received and
simply ask, "Does that make sense?" or "Does that mean anything to you?" The more
confirmations you receive the more your confidence will build. My advice during this process
is never tell a client what it means, ask them if it makes sense to them and most of the time
they will reveal the meaning, even if you already intuited it.
