RHA Helps With SGA Freshman Welcome

RHA once again took part in SGA’s “Freshman Welcome” this past month, the third time participating in the event. We worked alongside SGA, SAA, and a variety of other student orga-nizations on campus. The RHA Executive Board showed up ear-ly, stayed late, and gave it their all on that Sunday – preparing Reed Plaza with the “G Book” and food. This act of participa-tion, as well as RHA’s presence in SGA Senate Meetings, is all part of an effort to become more of a presence on campus. Be-

ing the second largest student organization encompassing over 7,000 residents, it is important to get our name out there and continue to grow in awareness. The Freshman Welcome was an opportunity to promote RHA, as well as our own Welcome Week program “Welcome to the Clas-sic City,” which is recapped on page two. The students who at-tended Freshman Welcome no-ticed RHA’s participation in the event, especially since our enthu-siastic executive board greeted them with smiles, and a couple of

dance moves that we were not in the least embarrassed of doing. Overall, the students were able to participate in the annual picture and RHA was able to help and promote itself along the other

student organizations on campus - a great success before classes even officially started in the Fall.

The Welcome Week Flyer

The crowd was large at Welcome to the Classic City on Creswell Patio

During the first week of classes on August 14, RHA held the annual Welcome Week pro-gram, except things were differ-ent this year. For the first time, the program, “Welcome to the Classic City,” was held on Cre-swell Patio. The result? Hundreds of residents from Creswell, Rus-sell, and Brumby , and many more from across campus, came out for the free food, shirts, magnets, other giveaways, and live DJ. The program had a few major goals that were met: to educate residents about all the Classic City has to offer and to show off the hard work RHA puts in and will be putting in to pro-gramming throughout the year. Several local restaurants

catered the event, all of which are highlighted on the follow-ing page. And it would never be an RHA program without giving away lots of free things. Nearly 400 shirts, and almost as many magnets highlighting the calen-dar of events for the year, were given out, along with several Na-lgenes for those who tweeted us on out Twitter page and liked us on Facebook. Check out photos of the day here. We hope that if you came to Welcome to the Classic City, you enjoyed yourself. If not, be sure to attend Light Up the Alley and all our upcoming events!

No Reservations: Athens EditionThe following are places we recommend for those new to Athens

Welcome new students to UGA! We are so excited about your first year in the Bulldog Na-tion! Athens is an amazing place with its own diverse culture, and one of the highlights of our cul-ture is the food. Athens is often praised for its “mom and pop” shops that serve unique cuisine that you can’t find anywhere else. RHA featured many of the popu-lar restaurants at our Welcome Week program, “Welcome to the Classic City.” Check out some of these places for Sunday night dinner, to cater a program, or just for the experience. Cali N’ Tito’s: Famous for their delicious fish tacos; the place to be if you like Latino and Caribbean food! Their outdoor seating, rhythmic music, and re-laxed atmosphere give a truly au-thentic feel to their restaurant. It’s located on Milledge. Marti’s at Midday: What makes this place special isn’t just the decor or friendly service, but the fact that Marti makes all items on her own! They serve amazing pita chips and hummus, which make a vegetarian option

at any program. It’s located on Prince. Barberito’s: Even though Barberito’s is a popular food chain, it started right here in Ath-ens! Stop by for a tasty burrito or chips and salsa. There are three locations: Lumpkin, Broad, and Barnett Shoals. Transmetropolitan Pizza: Fondly called “Transmet” by lo-cals, their New York styled pizzas are a delicious addition to any dinner table. Their menu ranges from classic pepperoni pizza, to healthy green salads, to seafood pastas. There are two locations, East Clayton and Oglethorpe on the Westside of Athens. Stuffed Burger: If you’re a burger person, then this is the place for you! They stuff their burgers with interesting fillings such as macaroni and cheese, tater tots, and queso cheese. Although it’s a bit unusual, it still makes a tasty and satisfy-ing meal. It’s located on Barnett Shoals. Kelly’s Jamaican Food: Looking for the taste of the is-lands? Check out Kelly’s au-

thentic Jamaican rice and peas, patties, and jerk chicken - but be careful, the jerk chicken can get really spicy! It’s located on Milledge. NONA’s: New Orleans N Athens offers the best of cajun country. If you’re looking for a nice spot to take your family defi-nitely try NONA’s. It’s located on Broad. Inoko’s: If you like sushi then check out Inoko’s Express, one of several amazing Asian restaurants in Athens. It’s located on College Station. Insomnia Cookies: New to Athens, Insomnia Cookies is quickly making a name for them-selves among UGA students. If you’re ever Downtown and you’re craving something sweet drop by! Or if you’re studying late, call them and they’ll deliver! How cool is that? They’re located on Clay-ton. Be sure to check out these places to get a true taste of Athens.

Message from the New President

Kaitlyn Branson, senior, takes over the position Hey RHA! I hope your semester has gotten off to an amazing start! Our executive board has been hard at work to make sure we hit the ground running. Already we had an awe-some Welcome Week program where over 400 residents en-joyed free food, music, and t-shirts as we worked to spread our RHA name. Be sure not to miss out on future programs by liking us on Facebook and follow-ing us on Twitter. Just last week-end we hosted an incredible Exec ‘N Rec program where we sharp-ened the leadership skills of your hall council members. It was a wonderful experience, and I look forward to having the opportunity to grow with the new RHA coun-cils throughout the year. We also have a night of free bowling and fun planned for our next program.

I hope you and all of your on campus friends will join us as we spend time together Lighting Up the Alley. September 25th from 10 p.m. to 12 a.m. we will be rent-ing out Showtime Bowling. Don’t have a car? Don’t worry! We will be busing people from several bus stops around campus! I look forward to seeing you at our future programs and hope that many of you will take advantage of the awesome ben-efits RHA offers to residents. If you ever need anything, feel free to visit during executive board of-fice hours, which can be found on our website here, or email me at [email protected]. Have a good semester and GO DAWGS!

Photo of the Month: New RHA General Body

It has yet again reached that time of year when elections for Hall Council officers have ended and 13 councils with un-bridled young talent have formed. With one of the most academi-cally competitive classes to ever grace the campus, the student leaders joining us as part of the RHA family have only the utmost caliber. That also means that it is time for our annual award winning RHA Exec ‘N Rec training. This is a two part event that is hosted by RHA each year to equip all the councils with the tools and knowl-edge they need to make this an amazing year for you – the resi-dent. This year has already left its mark with phase one of Exec ‘N Rec 2013, “Adventure is Out There,” a Pixar theme. This past weekend the councils came out

to the executive training in the MLC, showing off their spirit in true Pixar form and learning all the while in several programming tracks, from those teaching the importance of teamwork to those showing how to use Adobe Illus-trator. There was also committee breakouts, and if you are inter-ested in a committee, fill out an application here. This Friday, September 20, all the hall council members will be treated to a day of fun at Funopolis in Commerce, Georgia. Throughout this time they will be forming networks and even bet-ter, forging friendships, that will last them their entire time here in college and beyond!

Update From RHA’s Daughter OrganizationsThe new year brings new leadership, initiatives, and opportunities for NRHH and RHS

Hey RHA! I hope you have all enjoyed the past month living on campus, and that you have discovered some of the many available opportunities to lead, serve, and recognize across campus while being scholastical-ly successful. I know I have really enjoyed my first month serving as Executive Director of NRHH with the new Executive Board and members! NRHH is comprised of the top one percent of on-campus residents. We are committed to promoting our four pillars of Leadership, Service, Recognition, and Scholastics within the resi-dence halls, and we host socials, service and recognition projects, and other events throughout the

semester to do so. In fact this month we have already begun our projects, volunteering with Project Safe and learning how to make yogurt from scratch. Next week we’ll be having a game night and parasites lecture. As you can see, this organization is all about mixing fun, learning, and community service to promote learedership in the halls. In the coming months, you can look forward to hearing about all of the other fantastic service and recognition projects that are going on within NRHH. I hope that with time you will consider joining this wonderful organization! I am also proud to an-nounce the August Of-the-Month (OTM) award winners. These are

Imagine a world where you could act, direct, write, and edit for television. A world where you could be a star and go to college at the same time. RHS offers you access to just that world. RHS writes, films, and ed-its videos for their own television channel, Housing 12. Thursday nights at 6:30 p.m. you can find the members in their office out-side Creswell Hall pitching video ideas, filming, laughing, and hav-ing a blast. As a member you get full access to the cameras, soft-ware, costumes, and more. The most unique aspect of the orga-nization, however, is that all of the ideas come from the members. Every week, the floor is opened to pitches from the general body where anyone can suggest a video based on whatever inter-ests they happen to have. Past videos have ranged in topic from science fiction to fantasy, news, comedy, and more. The pitches are limited only by the creativity of the members seeking to pro-duce a project. As a member of RHS you get to experience a

larger part of the production pro-cess than most professionals ever see. Whereas professionals tend to only work on their own specified part of production, RHS members get to be involved in every part of the process. They often even act in, direct, and edit the same project. The best part is we are always looking for more members. Even now, we are pre-paring to audition for a new show called “College Code” that will feature UGA students giving ad-vice based on their own personal experiences for how to survive on campus. This will go along with our current show, “Classic City Bark.” And of course we assisted RHA with their Exec ‘N Rec roll call video, which you can view here. The opportunities offered by RHS are endless and members trea-sure the experience they gain. If you would like to get involved or audition to be an actor email me at [email protected] for more informa-tion!

RHA Committees OpenWith 10 options, there is something for you

My name is Josh Schwartz, and as the RHA Vice President, I oversee the 10 committees that are part of RHA. Committees are going to be big this year in RHA, and all residents are welcome to join them. It’s an easy way to get involved in the second largest student organization on campus. The following is a quick descrip-tion of each of them. We have an Advertising Committee that helps manage this wonderful newsletter, as well as the RHA website and numer-ous ads that are shown across campus. We have a Housing 12 Committee to help manage our own TV channel that Housing has. Checkout channel 12 when-ever you have the chance! If you are interested in Political Science, we have com-mittees such as the Bid Review Committee and the Constitution and Policy Book Review Com-mittee that focus on items that represent UGA and our residents across the nation. For you readers who want to see a greener UGA, then we

also have a Sustainability Com-mittee that helps work on making a more sustainable housing. One of the other is the Georgia Residence Hall Organi-zation (GHRO) Committee. UGA will be hosting the GRHO annual conference in January and we need a ton of volunteers to help out. Other options for you are our Spirit Committee that focus-es on spirit items and prepara-tion for housing conferences, the Finance Committee that helps deliver those amazing exam care packages that residents receive during finals week, a Resident’s Concern Committee that helps collect resident’s feedback and try to find ways of implementing solutions, and Traditions Com-mittee that helps RHA have a presence at Homecoming as well as a yearbook for the end of the year. If you want to apply or need any more information, visit our website here.
