The Respiratory System
Function
A collection of organs that take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide
External Respiration: exchange of gases between the atmosphere and the blood
Internal Respiration: exchange of gases between the blood and the cells of the body
Is breathing the same as respiration?
NO!!!Breathing only involves inhaling &
exhaling
Respiration is the entire process by which the body obtains & uses oxygen and gets rid of carbon
dioxide
Breathing
Process of moving air into & out of the lungs
• Inspiration : intake of air, chest expands as muscles contract move ribs up & out
• At the same time the diaphragm contraction moves downward
• Expiration: release of air, reverse
Breathing is controlled by your brain subconsciously. So can you override
your respiratory control system?

STRUCTURE
1. The LUNGS
2. External begins @ noise or mouth
3. Filtered by noise hairs passed into the nasal cavity
4. Filtered air moves into the pharynx throat… passage for both air & food
5. Epiglottis flap allows passage
STRUCTURE
6. Directed into the trachea windpipe… upper end is larynx voice box
7. Branches into bronchi (smooth muscle) leads to lungs
8. Bronchioles end in clusters of tiny air sacs alveoli
