Function

A collection of organs that take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide

Page 3: The Respiratory System Function A collection of organs that take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide.

External Respiration: exchange of gases between the atmosphere and the blood

Internal Respiration: exchange of gases between the blood and the cells of the body

Is breathing the same as respiration?

NO!!!Breathing only involves inhaling &

exhaling

Respiration is the entire process by which the body obtains & uses oxygen and gets rid of carbon

dioxide

Breathing

Process of moving air into & out of the lungs

• Inspiration : intake of air, chest expands as muscles contract move ribs up & out

• At the same time the diaphragm contraction moves downward

• Expiration: release of air, reverse

STRUCTURE

1. The LUNGS

2. External begins @ noise or mouth

3. Filtered by noise hairs passed into the nasal cavity

4. Filtered air moves into the pharynx throat… passage for both air & food

5. Epiglottis flap allows passage

STRUCTURE

6. Directed into the trachea windpipe… upper end is larynx voice box

7. Branches into bronchi (smooth muscle) leads to lungs

8. Bronchioles end in clusters of tiny air sacs alveoli

American Lung Associations http://www.lungusa.org/

• More than 35 million Americans are living with chronic lung disease such as asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis

• Lung disease is the number three killer in America

• Responsible for one in six deaths

• Lung disease and other breathing problems constitute one of the leading causes of death in babies younger than one year old

GAS EXCHANGE

Within lungs between the alveoli & blood in the capillaries

About 95-98% of the Oxygen moves the red blood cells
