* . The Fabricator (NOMMA Magazine)

a I ]WORKING SMARTER - NCrr HARDER

A resource list for architectural metal details

by Alex Klahm

Klahm & Sons Inc. Ocala, Fla.

Every year I lose money on one or two jobs because I had to do something the hard way. And every year when I go to the NOMMA convention I find some- one who tells me exactly what I wished I had known when I was suffering through that problem job last year.

Why do we have to pay such a high price for the cost of an education in the ornamental iron business? We don't need to know where to buy a specialty item after we've paid the machine shop $50.00 per hour to custom make it. What we do need is an expanded knowledge of sources for special ornaments and details prior to actually needing such items for our metalwork projects.

This year at the Denver con- vention several of us decided to take a quantum leap fonnrard and give Murphy a run for his money. Our goal - to gain the resource knowledge we need before it costs us money. Through our NOMMA network, we have the means of accomplishing this by creating a resource pool of infor- mation on architectural metal details and ornamentation.

Over the years we have all located sources and resources for products and materials that help us sell our custom metal- work. If we could pool our knowledge about where to find the elusive ornaments, powders, adhesives and art supplies we all need, we surely could give Murphy a run for his money - and work more efficiently and cost effectively in the bargain.

To make this resource list work for all of us, we each need to send a list of the sources we'd like to share to one central loca- tion where the data can be col- lected, verified, published and then distributed back to all of us.

The individual who has offered to help us with this is metalsmith Ken Hambel of Myers and Co. Architectural Metals, Basalt, Colo., and we thank him warmly for his time and effort.

Just to start the ball rolling, following are some of our best sources for the materials we incorporate into our work:

Art Essentials of New York Ltd., Three Cross St., Suffern, N.Y., 10101 (telephone - 914-368-1100); suppliers of gold, silver, aluminum and copper leaf and appropriate accessories; books on exotic finishing tech- niques; catalog available at no cost.

P. E. Guerin & Co., 23 Jane St., New York, N.Y., 10014 (telephone - 212-243-5270); suppliers of bronze, brass and gold- plated architectural metal ornaments, including balls, knobs, finials, rosettes and trim; catalog available for $5.00.

Crescent Bronze Powder Co., 116-122 W. Illinois St., Chicago, Ill., 60610 (telephone - 312-644-8124); also 1841 S. Flower St., Los Angeles, Calif., 90015 (telephone - 2137W5285); suppliers of bronze powders in many colors for use in creating exotic finishes; brochure and color chart available.

Crystal Lamp Parts, 2050 E. 15th St., Los Angeles, Calif., 90021 (telephone - 800-321-0781 or 213-746-2520); offers large catalog containing many brass details easily incorporated into custom metalwork.

W. F. Norman, 214 N. Cedar St., Nevada, Mo., 64772-0323 (telephone - 800-641-4038);

-7-

source for architectural sheet metal stampings, available in zinc, copper or brass; catalog available at no cost; also custom metal spinning is offered here.

J. P. Weaver Co., 2301 W. Victory Blvd., Burbank, Calif., 91506 (telephone - 818-841-5700); offers an elegant variety of architectural ornaments for in- teriors; details traditionally offered in wood may now be available in brass; color brochure available for $3.00.

Dempsey Inc., 72 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan., 66118 (telephone - 913-371-3107); Mike Dempsey has offered to sell NOMMA members Petrobond sand at discounted prices; an excellent material for use in producing custom lead castings in the ornamental iron shop; available through local foundry suppliers.

Scott Plastics Co., I? 0. Box 2958, Sarasota, Fla., 33578 (telephone - 813-355-5171); Scott Plastics Pacific Co., I? 0. Box 9845, Ogden, Utah 84409 (telephone - 801-773-9940); offers plastic letters and numerals useful for creating custom castings; catalog available for $5.00.

So pull together your own list and send it to Ken. After he confirms the information and assembles the sources, he will publish a comprehensive listing and make it available to all of us. The hour you spend sending him your resources can easily save you and your fellow fabricators a good deal of time, effort and money when that special job comes through and you need the information then and there.

Work smarter! Send your sources to: Resource List for Architectural Metalwork, c/o Mr. Ken Hambel, Myers & Co. Archi- tectural Metals, f? 0. Box 1025, Basalt, Colo. 81621.

SOUTHWEST REGIONAL UPDATE

On Saturday and Sunday, June 2 5 and 26, 1988 a scroll making class was held at Jimmy Tucker's new shop. Attendees were Steve Bloom, Joe Farina, Hay Nager, Dale Kipp, Louis Higgleman and naturally the instructor; Jimmy Tucker. Jimmy's new shop is well arranged including office space and a brand new chimney arrangement that really draws well.

Jimmy led the workshop and started out by distributing printed materials covering scroll making that the attendees could refer to later. He laid out a European technique know as the four centered scroll which uses a divider compass and turns out to be a quick and easy way to design scrolls. Once traced out wit.h chalk or soapstone the smith works his iron to match the tracing. We then watched while Jimmy Demonstrated his technique for forming the scroll while matching the traced shape before applying the technique ourselves. We worked till noon when the group broke for lunch. Afterwards we all took a tour of some of Samuel Yellin's work on display at the Ringling Gallery in Sarasota. There were some magnificent pieces demonstrating the man's creative talents. Upon returning to the smithy the group continued to practice their new found skills. Joe Fari'na took advantage of the availability of Jimmy's ti5 pound champion power hammer to draw out some damascus steel he was working on. The day closed with a discussion of the Crowley Museu111 gate to be designed, built and donated by the southwest group. We started on the gate the next morning (Sunday) and began to apply what we had learned the day before. Jimmy led the group in laying out the gate design with Louis, Dale and Joe forming the scrolls and tenons for the gate (Steve and Ray only participated on day one). The two day session was very enjoyable and educational with p1ent.y of practical application of the material studied. Future meetings will complete the gate for final installation at the museum.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Saturday July YO 1988 at the Crowley Museum. Come Join us.

I would like to run for one of the openings on the board. I have been a member of ABANA for several years and have enjoyed every minute of it. I believe if it wasn't for ABANA the black- smithing in the United States would be in real poor shape. It is an art that had, for the most part, died out.

Through ABANA and its hard working members, officers and just plain good people blacksmithing is a growing craft again. I would like to do more for ABANA inasmuch as it has done so much for me. I have Seen in my own welding business for 18 years (including several years of specializing in ornamental iron, sculpture, and forge work) working with people everyday. I believe I have enough experience with people and business and just good common sense that I can contribute a lot to ABANA and its members. So I would appreciate your confidence and suppprt for the position of Board Member.

Sincerely,

Jerry Grice

Dear Chapter Member,

Just as your chapter needs new chapter members for its health and vitality, so toedoes ABANA. I am writing to urge each of you to go out and recruit a t least one new member for ABAN.A. Someone from your chapter who is not a member, or someone outside your Guild who has expressed interest in our kind of endeavor.

To whet your interests further if you get two new ABANA members, we will send you a T-shirt from the Sloss Conference.

a If you get ten new members, we will send you a dress belt buckle also from Sloss. The only requirement is that you send in all two or all ten names at one time, complete with names, addresses, and the money. Otherwise the record-keeping at the the central office will become horrendous! Just think, now you can get belt .buckles for your whole family. . . .

Finally, the person who gets the most new members between now and our conference in 1990, will win a brass anvil from Bill .

Gichner. And this anvil isn't one of the pocket varieties, either. So get new members, good luck t o you, and thanks from all of us in ABANA.

Sincerely,

No1 Putnam
