Today’s Readings

Acts 10:34-43 Cornelius, a centurion in the military force in Palestine, and already a believer in God, has had a vision. As a result, he has invited Peter to visit him and his household. It was against Jewish law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile, but Peter comes anyway, with “some believers from Joppa”.

T hen Peter began to speak to them: “I truly under-stand that God shows no partiality, but in every

nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ – he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Ju-dea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about do-ing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the peo-ple and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

Colossians 3:1-4 The author has described baptism as being “raised with

Christ” and becoming sharers in his suffering and death.

Baptism entails dying to one’s old ways and focusing on

new, godly, ones.

I f you have been raised with Christ, seek the things

that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right

hand of God. Set your minds on things that are

above, not on things that are on earth, for you have

died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you

also will be revealed with him in glory.

John 20:1-18 John tells us the events of the Sunday morning after Jesus died and was buried. Mary Magdalene has witnessed Je-sus’ death on the cross and has been present at his burial in the tomb hewn out of the rock. The orderliness of the linen wrappings shows that the grave has not been robbed.

E arly on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw

that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes.

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Je-sus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Fa-ther, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

Confession of Sin and Absolution

Celebrant: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Celebrant and People: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

Please stand.

The Peace Celebrant: The peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And also with you.

We believe in God the Father, God almighty, by whose plan earth and heaven sprang to being all created things began. We believe in Christ the Savior, Son of God in human frame, virgin-born, the child of Mary upon whom the Spirit came.

Christ, who on the cross forsaken, like a lamb to slaughter led, suffered under Pontius Pilate, he descended to the dead. We believe in Jesus risen, heaven’s king to rule and reign, to the Father’s side ascended till as judge he comes again.

We believe in God the Spirit; in one Church, below, above: saints of God in one communion, One in holiness and love. So by faith, our sins forgiven, Christ our Savior, Lord and friend, we shall rise with him in glory to the life that knows no end.

The Great Thanksgiving (Eucharistic Prayer A)

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise. Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The day of resurrection! Earth tell it out abroad; the Passover of gladness, the Passover of God! From death to live eternal, from earth unto the sky, our God has brought us over, with hymns of victory. Our hearts be pure from evil, that we may see aright the Lord in rays eternal of Resurrection light; and listening to his accents, may hear so calm and plain, his own “All hail,” and hearing, may raise the victor strain. Now let the heavens be joyful, and earth her song begin. The round world keep high triumph, and all that is therein; let all things seen and unseen their notes of gladness blend. For Christ the Lord is risen, our joy that has no end. -St. John of Damascus

Sanctus and Benedictus S125 Richard Proulx

The Celebrant continues

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

A Word from the Vicar and Subdean

Perhaps you have seen the recent music video Rinascerò, Rinascerai by Roby Fac-chinetti. The title, translated into English, is: “I’ll be reborn, you’ll be reborn.” The evocative YouTube video depicts picturesque scenes from the city of Ber-gamo, Italy, as well as hospital workers at Saint John XXIII Hospital where Fac-chinetti’s wife serves as a volunteer—and where hundreds of people have died in recent weeks. I’ll be reborn, you’ll be reborn. When all is said and done, we’ll see the stars again. I’ll be reborn, you’ll be reborn. The storm that overwhelms us bends us, but will not break us. . . These days will change our days, but this time we’ll learn a little more. I’ll be reborn, you’ll be reborn I’ll be reborn, you’ll be reborn. Embraced by big skies, We will trust God again. And in silence we’ll breathe a new breath. . . A rebirth is a new birth after death. Rebirth is Resurrection. Easter might feel empty this year. Yet it is precisely the empty tomb which signifies our Lord’s resurrection. The stone has been rolled away. Because our Lord lives, we too shall live. Emptiness expands our capacity to breathe a new breath—and receive new life, resurrected life, renaissance. What are the stones being rolled away within your own life this Easter?

Faithfully yours, Callie

‘I Am the Resurrection and the Life’

Jesus audaciously abolished death, transforming it from a door that slammed to, into one that

opened to whoever knocked. He made death, as Bonhoeffer joyously said on his way to be execut-

ed, for a Christian a beginning, not an end. It was the key to life; to die was to live.

As I approach my own end, which cannot now be long delayed, I find Jesus’ outrageous claim to be,

himself, the resurrection and the life, ever more captivating and meaningful. Quite often, waking up

in the night as the old do, and feeling myself to be half out of my body, so that it is a mere chance

whether I go back into it to live through another day, or full disengage and make off; hovering thus

between life and death, seeing our dear earth with its scents and sounds and colors, as I have known

and loved them, more, perhaps, as Bernanos said, than I have dared to admit; recalling the golden

hours of human love and human work, at the same time vouchsafed a glimpse of what lies ahead,

Eternity rising in the distance, a great expanse of ineffable light – so placed, I hear Jesus’ words ring

triumphantly through the universe, spanning my two existences, the one in Time drawing to a close

and the one in Eternity at its glorious beginning. So at last I may understand, and understanding,

believe; see my ancient carcass, prone between the sheets, stained and worn like a scrap of paper

dropped in the gutter, muddy and matted with being trodden underfoot, and, hovering over it, my-

self, like a butterfly released from its chrysalis stage and ready to fly away. Are caterpillars told of

their impending resurrection? How in dying they will be transformed from poor earth-crawlers into

creatures of the air, with exquisitely painted wings? If told, do they believe? Is it conceivable to them

that so constricted an existence as theirs should burgeon into so gay and lightsome a one as a but-

terfly’s? I imagine the wise old caterpillars shaking their heads – no, it can’t be; it’s a fantasy, self-

deception, a dream. Similarly, our wise ones. Yet in the limbo between living and dying, as the night

clocks tick remorselessly on, and the black sky implacably shows not one single streak or scratch of

gray, I hear those words: I am the resurrection and the life, and feel myself to be carried along on a great

tide of joy and peace.

Malcolm Muggeridge

If there is anywhere on earth a lover of God who is always kept safe, I know nothing of it, for it was not shown to me. But this was shown: that in falling and rising again we are always kept in that same precious love.

Julian of Norwich (1341-1415)

Impending Resurrection

We pay more attention to dying than to death. We’re more concerned to get over the act of dying

than to overcome death. Socrates mastered the art of dying; Christ overcame death as the last ene-

my. There is a real difference between the two things; the one is within the scope of human possi-

bilities, the other means resurrection. It’s not from ars moriendi, the art of dying, but from the resur-

rection of Christ, that a new and purifying wind can blow through our present world. Here is the

answer to Archimedes’ challenge: “Give me somewhere to stand, and I will move the earth.” If only

a few people really believed that and acted on it in their daily lives, a great deal would be changed.

To live in the light of resurrection – that is what Easter means.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Risen with Christ

Last night at the Easter Vigil we received Easter’s gift as a light in the darkness. And while this light doesn’t eliminate all of life’s many darknesses, it does allow us to surrender our overwhelming fear of such darkness. For whether it is in announcing his birth or proclaiming his resurrection, God’s angels speak in one voice to those who follow Christ, ‘Be not afraid’. For while it is still dark out there beyond the range of my candle light - my Easter joy and hope- I know that as long as I grasp this Easter light, I can walk into those and any other darkened place I might encounter in my life’s journey. And walk, I shall, after this night, in hope and not in fear.

This is the meaning of our being risen with Christ. The Christ light changes all things not by changing all things as much as by changing how we face all things. ’Light piercing the darkness’ has always been a way for Christians to understand how the risen Lord seeks to overcome our fears and increase our courage to live into God’s future for us.

After all, the risen Christ doesn’t eliminate death, he conquers it! But first, he encounters it and in all its varied manifestations. And so, our joy on this Easter feast is not to believe that we have somehow become immunized against such darkness in this life but rather, to find in the Risen One the means to make our way through such shadowy days. In so doing, we, like the psalmist before us, might begin to prepare our-selves not for a life filled with continual shadows on this earthly quest but for a great feast celebrated above in the light and the glory of our risen Lord.

Happy Easter!
