There are two types of eye doc-tors, optometrists and ophthalmologists, with about 35,000 optom-etrists and 19,000 ophthalmologists practicing in the United States.OptometristsOptometrists obtain their doctorate of optometry upon completionof a 4-year graduate education in optometry. Optometric students gen-erally spend the first two years in learning basic sciences and the lasttwo years in learning to refract patients for corrective eyewear (glassesand contact lens) and examine ocular diseases. Upon graduation andpassing the licensing board examinations, optometrists can practiceoptometry. Clinical residency oppoftunities are available to optometristswho wish to obtain advanced clinical competence in an area' Thesespecialty areas include family practice optometry, pediatric optometry'geriatric optometry, vision therapy and rehabilitation, low-vision reha-bilitation, cornea and contact lenses, refractive and ocular surgery, andprimary eye care optometry and ocular disease.

    OphthalmologistsOphthalmologists are physicians, either an M.D. (doctorcine) or a D.O. (doctor of osteopathic medicine), who mobtained their medical degree and completed a one year ifollowed by 3 years of training in ophthalmology' Upon comthe internship year and passing the national medical boardtions, these physicians are fully-licensed to practice generalDuring the 3 years of residency in ophthalmology, the residecians learn the eye's anatomy, the treatment of eye diseathe skills necessary to perform surgeries of ditferent subspeophthalmology. There are about nine or ten subspecialties:cornea, refractive, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, ocularocular pathology, ocular plastics, uveitis, and vitreo-retinaUpon completing the residency, these physicians can practhalmology and become board-certified by passing the woral specialty board examinations. As the trend of health carhas become more specialized, about 3O-4O% of ophthalchoose to spend an additional one to three years in fellowshin one of the subspecialties areas.
