the fall season has arrived, one of the nicest times of year no matter where you may happen to be. but

many of us are in one the most beautiful and enjoyable locations on the planet – Colleton river.

Janice and i spend our summers in the sub arctic territory known as Cape Cod. i, however, have the opportunity to return to Colleton at least monthly during the summer, to attend board meetings and warm up.

leaving Cape Cod and returning home to Colleton was particularly easy this year, with the increasing population of great white sharks in nantucket Sound and the collapse of my red Sox!!

but what really adds to our pleasure is getting to meet our new golf professional, Calay Swift, and our new executive Chef, robert Wysong. our team of dedicated staff continues to strengthen and our expectations are high, as they should always be.

all that with the backdrop of our well-orchestrated announcement of Colleton being selected to host the 2015 u.S. Junior amateur Championship on our dye Course, as well as Colleton earning its third consecutive designation as a Platinum Club of america. that second piece of information may not be “top of mind” for many of us, but it is, in professional club circles, a very big deal.

i know we all look forward to an exciting fall season here in Colleton, and i hope you all join me in taking full advantage of our planned special events, as well as our ever-improving facilities and amenities. We plan to add to these judiciously in the months and years ahead.

finally, and i am almost afraid to mention it, given my inclinations on the superstition side, the real estate market appears to be moving slightly away from life support.

in fact, we now have double the property sales that we did in all of 2011, and we aren’t even through the end of the year! additionally, 15 homes are currently in the arb process, corresponding to approximately $17m of construction. that’s the kind of news that could turn me into an optimist!

fall is here and with it comes great news of exciting events and accolades. first, i am delighted to announce that Colleton river Plantation Club has earned its third

consecutive Platinum Club of america designation, and is once again ranked among the top 15 residential Communities in the country by Club leaders forum – one of only two communities in the state of South Carolina to be included.

the Platinum Clubs of america rankings are determined by questionnaires sent to club managers and presidents of approximately 5,000 private clubs belonging to the Club managers association of america (Cmaa). a survey is

conducted every three years and this is the sixth compilation of the Platinum Clubs of america. in addition to residential communities, other categories of club recognition include: country clubs, golf, city/dining, athletic and yacht.

this prestigious recognition is based on five aspects of private clubs:

• Quality of membership• tradition and Culture• amenities• Governance• Quality of management and Staff

i know we are all extremely honored to again be recognized, and believe that a third consecutive Platinum Club of america designation is a true testament to the unwavering dedication of our devoted board and committee representatives, outstanding members and professional staff who take pride in ownership of the club, serve as ambassadors of Colleton, possess a positive attitude and strive to address each member by name and provide unrivaled personal service.

for the front line and behind-the-scenes staff, as well as the members who generously volunteer their time in governance and interclub activities, we all owe them a debt of gratitude, as they were instrumental in achieving this national recognition.

additionally, as rob norton indicated in this month’s “note from your Club President,” we have experienced a robust increase in real estate transactions, resulting in the exciting growth of Colleton’s fine membership. Colleton to Host the 2015 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship

in case you missed Colleton’s special media event, hosted July 26, 2012 at the dye Clubhouse, the united States Golf association (uSGa) has elected to host its 2015 u.S. Junior amateur championship on Colleton’s acclaimed dye Course. uSGa representative Greg Sanfilippo announced the prestigious honor, and many local/regional dignitaries and members of the press were in attendance. Colleton’s expert Golf Professionals are

active & engaged

Born and raised in Cumberland, RI, Matt Lucchesi is the Director of Golf at Colleton River Plantation Club, as well as a Class A PGA Professional and a Titleist Performance Institute-certified Level Two Golf Fitness Instructor.

Matt played his collegiate golf at Middle Tennessee State University, where he captained his team to the 1994 Ohio Valley Conference Championship and, from 1995 to 1999, competed as a professional on numerous mini-tours from New England to South Florida. Matt worked, studied and perfected his golf swing with instructor Brian Mogg, a disciple of David Leadbetter. Occasionally, he also worked as a corporate outing instructor for the prestigious David Leadbetter Golf Academy.

Prior to joining Colleton, Matt held the position of Head Assistant Golf Professional at The Loxahatchee Club in Jupiter, FL, and was honored with numerous awards, such as the 2002 South Florida Section Apprentice Champion and the 2004 SFPGA Southeast Chapter “Assistant of the Year;” in 2005, he received the same honor from the South Florida Section of the PGA of America. Additionally, Matt served as the President of the Southeast Chapter SFPGA Assistants’ Association for three years.

Matt Lucchesi — Director of Golf, Colleton River Plantation Club

Colleton’s Director of Golf, Matt Lucchesi, demonstrated his skill during the 38th annual Hilton Head Open (August 4-5, 2012 at Wexford).


David La PourDirector of Instruction, Colleton River Plantation Club

Originally from Racine, Wisconsin, David played on golf teams for North Carolina (UNC-A) and Florida (F.I.T. 1987) before giving up his amateur status and becoming a golf professional in 1987. While competing in Florida mini tours, he worked as an assistant golf professional at Boca Lago Country Club in Boca Raton, FL. In 1988, he became an assistant professional studying under Peter Kostis at Broken Sound Club in Boca Raton.

David gained membership into the PGA of America in 1991 and, after eight years as a club professional, began working for the Dave Pelz Short Game School at the Boca Raton Hotel Resort & Club (1996). During his tenure with Dave Pelz, David appeared on The Golf Channel six times, as well as on ESPN, and has worked with tour players, such as Bill Glasson, K.J. Choi, Ty Tryon, John Harris, Miguel Angel Martin, David Lundstrom, Mike Sullivan, Tom Shaw, Wayne McDonald, and Melissa McNamara.

He was nominated for National PGA of America Teacher of the Year (2001), was recognized as one of “America’s Top Golf Instructors” by CRCA (2002-03) and was named as one of the Top Teaching Professionals in Minnesota (2005-06) and (2007-08) by Golf Digest magazine.

In 2003, David left his Lead Instructor position with Dave Pelz and became the Director of Instruction for WP Golf Operations and created the WP Golf Institute (2003-2008). In 2008, David accepted the Director of Instruction position for Colleton River Plantation Club, located in Bluffton, SC where he resides with his family.

Barry Pepper Assistant Golf Professional, Nicklaus Course

Barry Pepper was born and raised in Austin, Minnesota. Prior to his golf career, Barry spent his cold winters in Minnesota playing and coaching ice hockey.

Barry is a Class A PGA Professional serving as the Education Chairman for the Carolinas’ Section PGA Assistants’ Association. Before joining the team at Colleton River Plantation Club, Barry held the following positions: General Manager / Head Golf Professional at CT Myers Golf Club, Charlotte, NC; Head Golf Professional at Renaissance Park Golf Course, Charlotte, NC; North Shore Golf Club, Orlando, FL; and Assistant Golf Professional at Royal St. Cloud Golf Links, St. Cloud, FL. During his time in Orlando, Barry volunteered as the Assistant Tournament Director of the Greater Orlando Junior Golf Tour.

While in Charlotte, Barry was a founding chair of the Mecklenburg Junior Golf Association and assumed the role of Tournament Director with the Mecklenburg Junior Golf Tour. Barry achieved Certified Instructor status at the Impact Performance Golf Learning Center based in Charlotte, NC.

In 2012, Barry will begin his tenure as Tournament Co-Chairman with theHHI Junior Golf Association.

Barry currently lives in Bluffton and, when not working, enjoys traveling, working on his golf game, watching/playing hockey, playing tennis and keeping up with technology.

Colleton’s Director of Instruction David La Pour was part of the fine team representing Colleton at the 2012 Hilton Head Open golf tournament.

Derrick GarrouHead Golf Professional, Dye Course

Derrick Garrou is the Head Golf professional at Colleton River Plantation Club’s Dye Course and is a Class A PGA Professional. Derrick was born and raised in Old Fort, NC, and, prior to his golf career, worked alongside his father in the family pottery business, Garrou Pottery. Derrick was elected as a member of the PGA in December 2009.

During his career, Derrick has held the positions of: Assistant Golf Professional at The Grandfather Golf & Country Club, Linville, NC; Assistant Golf Professional at The Old Collier Golf Club, Naples, FL; and First Assistant Golf Professional at The Kittansett Club in Marion, MA. Over that time, Derrick studied and learned teaching and club fitting from two Master PGA Professionals, and merchandising from a PGA National Merchandiser of the Year.

Derrick now resides in Bluffton and, when not performing his duties as a golf professional, can be found working on his golf game, reading, fishing, making pottery and rooting for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Calay SwiftAssistant Golf Professional, Dye Course

Calay hails from Pittsburgh, PA and, following her path to become a Class A PGA Professional, has worked all over the country.

Growing up, Calay spent most of her time playing at Pennsylvania’s Oakmont Country Club learning the game under the tutelage of PGA Master Professional Bob Ford.

This experience paved the way to a Pennsylvania Girls State Championship and a successful collegiate career at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA.

Calay began her professional career in 1993 as an active member of the LPGA Futures Tour (renamed Symetra Tour) and, seasonally, as an Assistant Golf Professional at Jonathan’s Landing in Jupiter, FL.

Calay furthered her career at several fine clubs: Charlotte Country Club and Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte, NC; Allegheny Country Club, Sewickley, PA; and (as a Head Golf Professional) San Diego’s Santaluz Club, where she worked with husband James, current Director of Golf at Belfair Plantation in Bluffton, SC.

Calay and James live on Hilton Head Island with their children, Delcie and Andrew. When she is not working, Calay enjoys the beach, reading and serving as an assistant Girl Scout Leader.

Logan Scott — Assistant Golf Professional, Dye Course

Logan was born and raised in Louisville, KY. Following graduation from St. Xavier High School in 2001, Logan attended Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC, where he enrolled in the Professional Golfers Management Program and earned a degree in Business Administration

While attending Campbell University, he interned at Big Spring Country Club in Louisville, KY; The Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, NC; Pinehurst Resort – Course No. 7; and Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, NC.

Logan has been a Class A PGA Professional since 2006 and, over the past four years, has held the position of Assistant Golf Professional at Old Town Club in Winston Salem, NC. He enjoys teaching, merchandising and conducting tournaments.

Logan also enjoys college sports, mainly basketball. His favorite college team is the University of Kentucky Wildcats, and his favorite pro team is the Boston Celtics.

Congratulations to Brett HeislerBrett Heisler, our Nicklaus Head Golf Professional, has accepted the Head Golf Professional position at Bear Creek Golf Club on Hilton Head Island, SC, which is a wonderful opportunity for advancement in his profession.

Since joining Colleton in 2007, Brett has grown into a fine golf professional. He has been instrumental in enhancing our golf operations, and his professionalism and friendliness will be missed. We wish him all the best as he begins this new chapter of his life.

News from the Golf Academy

Living in an area surrounded by beauty, golf and the military, “Patriot Golf Day” (patriotgolfday.com) was a natural fit for Colleton and its golf academy. On September 1, Head Golf Professional Brett Heisler and I hosted an “Academy Day” at the Nicklaus driving range, offering free 15-minute lessons to the

membership. With the help of the TrackMan™ launch monitor, JC-Video system and a very supportive membership, we were able to raise $1,100 for the “Folds of Honor Foundation,” a nonprofit organization that provides educational scholarships for children and spouses of military men and women disabled or killed while serving our country. We thank the club for assisting this worthy cause and look forward to continued support of Patriot Golf Day!

Also in September, the CRGA hosted area PGA & LPGA Golf Professionals during the 3rd Annual Teaching Seminar at Colleton. This increasingly popular event features seminars regarding the latest, most effective teaching techniques. As your golf staff broadens its CRGA training, we will continue our vision of operating the finest teaching program for a club community in the U.S.A. From the Full Swing Building Block of the CRGA:

The Elusive Straight Shot! today’s tip is regarding the elusive “straight shot.” there are three ways to strike a ball so that it travels in a straight line to the target; however, a shot with zero degree club path, zero degree face angle and center impact location is definitely most effective.

• in shot types 2 and 3, the player must exactly counter balance club face and path to make launch direction zero, while simultaneously hitting it in the exact right location of the heel/toe, to counterbalance the spin axis tilt to level. this is tough to do intentionally.

• Shot type 1 (zero path, zero face angle, center impact) generates the greatest ball speed (smash factor) and carry, and, as a result, is the most efficient.

While this is simple to say, it’s not always simple to do. in my teaching with trackman™, i show the student some basic numbers, such as face angle or Club Path, and it is usually obvious that something may be off. as we adjust the grip, setup, or swing, we will begin to notice the numbers “softening,” or getting closer to zero, which is ideal.

Consequently, the shots gradually become straighter, and usually longer – although the student may feel a change taking place, and sometimes not like it, the results speak for themselves.

in the next issue of The River, i will talk about “bounce & roll,” and how to get the most from your newly found straight shot. until then, consider taking a trackman™ lesson and start hitting it straight!

it has been quite a busy summer! While the summertime brings days of reduced rounds and slower days for most areas at Colleton river Plantation Club, it’s when things really heat up for the maintenance staff.

in fact, we’ve accomplished dozens of projects over the last several months that should make each course play better than before and add to your overall enjoyment.

on the dye Course, some very aggressive cultural practices were applied to the fairways. each fairway was double aerified

and double verticut, and then deep tined. While this activity made the fairways look like the middle of winter for a couple of weeks, it will aid us in water movement, reduce grain on the fairways and provide firmer conditions throughout the fall and winter – i.e., provide more ball roll!

Several soil beds around trees were also reshaped and grassed,

providing a better playing surface than ever before. additionally, irrigation was installed along the drive range on oak tree drive to create better “curb appeal” en route to the clubhouse.

the nicklaus Course received its share of enhancements, as well. the fairways were also double aerified, but not for the same reasons. aerification allowed us to pull more dirt to the surface, which was then spread throughout the fairways to aid in smoothing the overall surface. each fairway was then deep tined to eight inches to aid with water movement.

new drainage was also installed on the nicklaus in the landing area of no. 3 and approach of no. 2, as well as next to the no. 6 green. on no. 5, approximately 200 yards of cart path were removed from the ladies’ tee towards the green and replaced with shell sand. this reduces the potential for a ball to hit the path and then “bounce” out of bounds. the remainder of the path to the green will be removed this winter. all of these projects should contribute to us having a very successful fall, winter and spring season!

david la Pour, our director of instruction, became a trackman™ Certified operator this year. the trackman™ radar unit measures the exact 3-dimensional club movement and ball flight, and provides precise data on the ball launch, ball flight and ball landing. fitting golfers properly translates into a more satisfying practice and playing experience. after years of hosting various uSGa events and extensive work by our members and staff, we are excited to have been selected to host the 2015 u.S. Junior amateur Championship. Hosting this event will provide an exciting learning experience for the golf staff and, as members, you will be fortunate to be a part of history and have an opportunity to watch the next up-and-coming golfers. an event of this magnitude requires more than 400 volunteers and we will be seeking membership and community support.

next time you stand on the no. 4 tee box of Colleton’s nicklaus Course, look around the island into the marsh. you’ll see an estuary, which is the transition zone where freshwater from the uplands meets saltwater from the

ocean. estuaries can be further divided into upper, middle and lower depending on water types – fresh, brackish & saline (see chart on opposite page). Who lives there and why?

marshes and estuaries are home to plants of varying heights, colors and textures. Charts a & b help explain common marsh plants and where they are located in the estuary. When you walk across the bridge toward the green, look around, smell and enjoy the marsh habitat. black needlerush provides the dark color contrast among the grasses. Spartina is a unique vascular plant that thrives in waters with high salinity.

both types of spartina (smooth and alterniflora) provide the “energy” in the marshes. tides wash the plants twice a day with nutrient-rich waters, and the slaty soil conditions prevent competition from other plants. the roots of this perennial grass must be exposed to the air several hours per day in order to obtain oxygen.

the grasses die during the winter and, broken off by wind and waves, the dead stalks form large floating masses called “wrack.” in time, this wrack becomes water-logged, sinks and becomes covered with marine bacteria and fungi. the decomposition process takes two years and adds another layer of “pluff mudd.”

Spartina grasses are the basis of the coastal food web and the pluff mud, in which Spartina grows, is a wonderful source of decaying plant matter, algae, bacteria and microscopic organisms that hide in the sand. at the bottom, microscopic one-celled algae, or phytoplankton, are suspended in the water to create a nutrient soup called detritus (mother’s milk). Phytoplankton contain chlorophyll, produce food, release oxygen and are responsible for the green tint in summer and blue in the winter. they are carried by the currents and provide food for mud-eaters, such as Periwinkle snails, fiddler crabs, mud snails and insects, and filter feeders, such oysters, shrimp, mullet and nematodes. fiddler crabs and Periwinkle snails are common to Colleton.

fiddler crabs are omnivorous (eat both plants and animals) crustaceans and one acre is home to approximately one million crabs. they shed their shells as they grow and generally move sideways – the fiddle

Colleton’s marshes abound with fascinating creatures

Great Outdoorsmovement of the smaller feeding claw gives the crab its name. the male fiddler has one large claw (cheeped), which it uses to attract the females (by waving and gesturing), find food and to protect itself. if the fiddler loses its large claw, it will grow another one on the other side the next time it molts. female fiddlers have two smaller claws.

after molting, fiddlers generally hide because their temporarily soft shells make them very vulnerable. they pick up mud with their claws, put it in their mouth, remove anything useful for food and then spit out and ball up the remains. the sediment balls are visible outside the burrow. this aeration is vital to marsh health and cleaning.

Common Periwinkle (littorina irrorata) is an omnivorous, grazing intertidal Gastropod that attaches itself to Spartina grasses to pick up algae scum on the stalks. through this activity, they also remove some of the tissue from the stalk itself, damaging the plant’s survival.

Periwinkle is considered a delicacy in Scotland, ireland, africa and asia, and is used as bait for catching small fish. this small marine gastropod mollusk has gills and an operculum (lid or flap covering) and uses its radula, or mouth, to scrape algae from rocks, grass and mud. if Periwinkle is not controlled by the blue crabs, they will overgraze the Spartina grasses.

Spicy Fall Tomato Sauce Robust flavors complement simple pasta nicely


my experience began as it often does for a young cook, as an apprentice to an encouraging professional chef. at the time, working in a “real kitchen” was all i could imagine doing.

in 1993, i found a renewed outlook and opportunity when i graduated from Johnson & Wales university, then located in Charleston, South Carolina, which only added to my already established passion of cooking and the family mealtime experience. being lucky enough to grow up in suburban maryland, i was exposed to the great wonders of the Chesapeake bay, while my father emphasized the importance of the enrichment of travel and dining. He also prepared breakfast every morning, which inspires me to this day.

my career as a culinarian has been rich and has provided me the freedom to do what i love, and opportunity to meet people from all over the world, which i cherish. my background experience includes: the private Pensacola Country Club; the great Grove Park inn and Spa resort hotel, the ritz Carlton Golf resort naples, and the Sanctuary at Kiawah island Golf resort, as well as numerous independent freestanding restaurants.

my most recent post involved leadership and direction of the Sanctuary’s food & beverage division – i had the honor and pleasure of overseeing the restaurant and banquet dining experiences for hotel guests since 2005. it has been this tier of the luxury travel industry that has allowed me the most freedom to create and enrich personal experiences for people.

With regard to lowcountry cuisine, i find it important to call on the philosophy of agriculture, season and social customs in agreement to guide menus and the cooking processes. the richness and food practices of our region help this along and, as a chef, i find myself an important steward of the movement. i will consider myself a lifelong student of hospitality and the culinary arts, continuously being focused on the personalized experience and refinement thereof.

i now feel privileged to join the leadership team of the Colleton river Plantation Club and to reside with my, wife marisa, in the unique and resourceful coastal South Carolina. i look forward to meeting you very soon.

Spicy Fall Tomato SauceWarm up a cool fall or winter evening with a light and spicy fresh tomato sauce. The robust flavors will complement a simple pasta, or French bread pizza.

Ingredients:• A 28-oz can crushed tomatoes; preferably Italian plum style• 1 tbls garlic; fresh, chopped or minced• A 2-oz can of anchovy filets; drained• A 4-oz can of black olives; drained & chopped• 1 tbls capers; drained, chopped• 1-2 fresh basil leaves; with stem• 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper, or to taste• 1 tbls flat leaf parsley; washed, finely minced• 1 c dry white wine• 2 tbls olive oil; for sautéing• Salt, to taste

Method:• In a medium sauté pan, sweat the garlic, anchovy filets & red pepper.• Cook briefly over medium heat, taking care to not brown the garlic.• Add chopped olives and white wine, reduce by one third.• Add tomatoes and establish a low simmer.• Taste carefully; does it need a pinch of salt?• Once flavors combine, remove sauce from heat and add chopped parsley.• Serve with your preferred pasta, or a grilled chicken breast.Buon appetito!

Tara DakoliosTara attended the University of Virginia, where she received her BA in History and a Master’s Degree in Education. She also walked onto the women’s basketball team and served as a team captain during her last two years. Following graduation, Tara spent three years coaching high school girl’s basketball in Virginia and South Carolina.

Her interest in fitness led her to become a personal trainer, and she holds certifications from the American

Council of Exercise and AFAA for personal training and group classes. Tara specializes in weight loss, reshaping the body and correcting postural

imbalances. She is very excited to assist members in accomplishing their healthy lifestyle goals.

Camila PachecoBorn and raised in Brazil, Camila Pacheco discovered her passion for dance when she was only five years old. During the past seven years, she has been actively sharing her love for health and fitness with others.

Camila is a certified fitness instructor, dance instructor and personal trainer with experience in strength training,

balance, flexibility and weight loss programs. She takes great pride in helping others achieve their health and fitness goals, as well as lifestyle changes.

LLG Season IV: Authors, iPads & More!the lifelong learning Group of Colleton river has

already begun Season iV with author S.J. tagliareni and his book, “Hitler’s Priest.” mr. tagliareni is a very good friend of Colleton river members Joe and Jan Pittelli, and we were delighted to welcome him as an llG luncheon speaker on August 17.

We were pleased to continue Season iV with a September 14 visit to the Coastal discovery museum where Carlos Chacon spoke to our group regarding the “life Cycle of butterflies.” following our talk, we visited the museum’s butterfly enclosure to see the

butterflies and the plants that attract them.on October 3, llG hosted a class on iPads in the nicklaus

ballroom. an apple representative from best buy was on hand to address members’ iPad questions and operation issues.

as we close the first half of Season iV in november, we will host three events for members. on monday, November 5, llG and our riverfront Committee will coordinate a field trip to the Port royal foundation on lemon island. as we enjoy a cup of coffee, the group will accompany Chris marsh and tony mills on a nature walk to Point Widgeon that will enable us to better understand the Port royal Sound and the goals of the Port royal foundation. david Harter will discuss fishing in the sound and the noaa research that involves the foundation.

on thursday, November 8, llG will present Sea Pines member, frank babel. mr. babel toured Cuba with a bike group in 2011. He is an engaging speaker who will show his photographs and discuss everyday life in Cuba.

Please mark your calendars for November 30 and join your friends for a delightful History tour & Holiday luncheon at rose Hill mansion, which has been called “the South’s most beautiful plantation.” the mansion is listed on the national register of Historic Places, as an exceptional example of antebellum Gothic revival residential architecture, circa 1858-1860, and will be decorated for the holidays.

the Colleton river art Group will offer two classes this fall. first, nancy Couick will be back with us for a watercolor class on October 12–14. all levels are welcome. then Vickie Jourdan will host a class on abstract acrylic landscapes on November 7–9. all levels are welcome.

We are also busily planning the second half of Season iV, which will take place after the holidays. included in our presentations will be a travel night at the dye learning Center on February 2. We will feature members’ memorabilia and information regarding their fascinating travels.

on February 15 we are planning a SCad tour and luncheon at Gryphon. We will travel to SCad by bus for this tour.

Operation Santa Claus2012 marks the 13th year for the Operation Santa Claus program, which helps our Bluffton neighbors in need. We wish we could say the economic environment in our area is getting better, but unfortunately this is not the case. The number of homeless children in Beaufort county now stands at 240 and 68% of the children enrolled at our local elementary schools reportedly come from families living below the poverty threshold.

Last year we raised in excess of $31,000 and benefitted more than 200 children. We are starting early again this year with the hope that our contributions will be even greater than last year.

You may donate by writing a check to “Community Foundation of the Lowcountry – CRP OSC Fund” (Colleton River Plantation Operation Santa Claus Fund. Remember, we are a 501(c)(3) fund through the Community Foundation. Checks may be mailed to: Colleton River Plantation Club, 58 Colleton River Drive, Bluffton, SC 29910, or dropped off at the front desk at the Nicklaus Clubhouse. Please look for your ornament on the Operation Santa 2012 Donation Tree.

Colleton river Plantation Club was proud to once again host day two, September 1,

2012, of the annual Hilton Head island Celebrity Golf tournament. Several Colleton members played in the 32nd annual tournament, including Jim Cubbin, Jim eisert, Jim Hooker, bill mcdaniel, Chris Schafer and Paul Zaffaroni, while a number of members volunteered their time, or simply came out to meet the stars.

the three-day labor day weekend event has raised nearly $4 million for children’s charities of the South Carolina lowcountry since its inception in 1979. the 2012 beneficiaries included: all Saints Preschool, bluffton Self Help, boys & Girls Clubs of the lowcountry, Child abuse Prevention association, Children’s relief fund, Christ lutheran Preschool, Citizens opposed to domestic abuse, Cross Preschool, deep Well Children’s fund, ella C. White memorial Scholarship fund, first Presbyterian day School, Heroes on Horseback, Hope Haven of the lowcountry, Hospice Care of the lowcountry, island recreation Center, may river montessori, Providence Children’s Center, St. luke’s Preschool, the Children’s Center and Volunteers in medicine Clinic.

this year’s tournament featured, among others: former pitcher tim Wakefield (boston red Sox), actor brian baumgartner (The Office), Golf Channel’s Holly Sonders (Morning Drive), basketball coach bobby Cremins (College of Charleston/Georgia tech), comedian Henry Cho and food network star robert irvine.
