    INTRODUCTION

    India has one of the largest road systems in the

    world. It has one of the most well connected road

    systems in the world which covers every nook andcorner of India.

    Indias infrastructure s a lot in terms of quantity but

    the quality of the roads are not so good.

    ROADS IN INDIA

    India's road network consists of national

    highways, state highways, district roads and

    village roads.

    Roadways in India have come a long way. Startingfrom the pugdandies.of earlier times to the

    present-day Rajpath of Delhi ,the country has

    crossed many spheres of road travel. Mentions to road constructions have been

    mentioned as early as the Atharva Veda.

    The main periods in which Indias road

    development was in golden stages was:

    -The Gupta and the Maurya Period

    -The Mughal Period

    -The period of the rule of the British.

    IMPORTANCE

    We may not think of it but we use roads almosteveryday in our life. They are presenteverywhere. Imagine our life's without roads.

    Roads are the vital lifelines of the economymaking possible trade and commerce.

    Roads facilitate movement of both men and

    materials anywhere within a country

    It is a relatively cheaper mode of transport as

    compared to other modes.

    THE GOLDEN QUADRILATERAL

    The Golden Quadrilateral is a highway

    network connecting India's four largest

    metropolises: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and

    Kolkata.

    Four other top ten metropolises: Bangalore,

    Pune, Ahemdabad, and Surat, are also served

    by the network.

    THE GOLDEN QUADRILATERAL

    This highway project , initiated by Atal Bihari

    Vajpayee, it is the first phase of the National

    Highway Development Project (NHDP), and

    consists of building 5,846 km (3,633 mi) offour/six lane express highways at a cost of

    (US$13.3 billion).

    THE EAST-WEST CORRIDOR & THE

    NORTH-SOUTH CORRIDOR The North South - East West Corridor

    (NS-EW) is the largest ongoinghighway project in India. It is thesecond phase of the NationalHighways Development Project

    (NHDP) It consists of building 7300

    kilometers of four/six laneexpressways connecting Srinagar,Kanyakumari, Porbandar and Silchar,

    at a cost of US$ 12.317 billion (at1999 prices). As of September 2010,5258 of 7300 km project has beencompleted.

    NATIONAL HIGHWAYS

    National Highways are the major Highways of

    India which connect almost all the places in

    India.

    The National Highways are the primary long-

    distance roadways and span about

    67,000 km (42,000 miles).

    Most of the National highways are only two

    laned(one lane on each side)

    NATIONAL HIGHWAYS

    National highways carry approximately 40 %

    of the total traffic but they are only 2 % of the

    entire road network

    Out of total length of national highways , 27 %

    is single lane/intermediate lane; whereas 59 %

    is double-lane standard; and the rest 14 % is

    four-lane/ six-lane/ eight lane standard

    FACTS ON THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY

    The longest National Highway is the NH 7

    which stretches across a distance of 2,369

    kilometers from Varanasi to Kanyakumari.

    The shortest National highway is the NH 47A

    connecting Kundanoor Junction in Kochi city

    to the Kochi port at Willingdon Island which is

    surprisingly only 5.9 km

    The above table shows the contribution of the Transport sector to the GDP of thenation. It also shows the individual contribution of the Road and the Railway sector to

    You can notice that the road sectors contribution to the GDP is increasing and the

    railways contribution is slowly decreasing

    CONCLUSION

    Transport is the lifeline of any economy. To

    ensure smooth movement of transport, it is

    essential to have good roads.

    The government should build roads with

    proper planning which last longer so that we

    have better infrastructure for the years to

    come.
