After a season of heavy rain, we discovered a noticeable difference in the condition of our California roads. Not only did Rufus (the clock) take a fatal fall, Mushu (the dog) found it very trying to travel when there’s a whole lot of shaking and rattling going on due to potholes, etc. Needless to say, he was pleased when we stopped for our first overnight at the Elks Lodge in Santa Clarita. But heeding Dale Cram’s sage advice, we took our souvenirs with us as we headed north to Napa. Since we enjoyed previous stays at the Napa Valley Fairgrounds, we decided to stay there again. The price is right, it’s within walking distance to the heart of town, and close to many wineries. GPS (and Uber!) have a tough time finding it sometimes, but that’s okay. That means fewer visitors for us. First stop was Mumm since reuniting with our best friends warranted a celebration. Their bubbles never disappoint and the grounds are beautiful. As members, we could reserve a table inside since it was a rainy day. (Continued on page 3) June 2017 Newsletter of the South Coast California Airstream Club

The Road to Napa

By Marya Barefoot

(Ed.: Bruce and Marya recently took a trip to Napa in their Airstream, and the following is a brief summary of their trip.)

For $20 a night, we had power and water. They also have a very convenient dump station on site, if needed.

THE ROAD TO NAPA (Continued)

(Continued from first page)

The following morning, we headed to St. Supery Vineyards and had a lovely tasting. Again, the grounds are beautiful, and I was particularly fond of the giant corkscrew in the front garden. Fortunately for us, our friends joined the wine club, which waived the $45 per person tasting fee!

Speaking of expensive tasting fees, we found most wineries in Napa are very pricey IF you can get in to taste. Many newer wineries are restricting the number of (per person) tastings they conduct per week. We visited one where they were only allowing 24 (yes, TWENTY-FOUR in one week). Reservations are a MUST at many of the wineries.

Our friends, the Coverts, REALLY wanted to visit Covert Winery (for obvious reasons). After several phone calls, we were finally able to get behind the big iron gate. This is one of the wineries that only do 24 tastings per week, so they weren’t exactly happy to see a party of four rather than the two they expected. They did, however, give us a lovely tour and tasting. The story goes that the Covert name has nothing to do with any individual’s name but rather the secret behind the building of the winery. The wines were out of our “retiree” price range, but David did buy a bottle for himself and his brother which waived the tasting fee for us.

Day three took us into San Francisco and a tour of Alcatraz. This is something we’ve all been wanting to do for a very long time, and the wait was worth it! It’s eery, surreal, yet very curious all at the same time. The weather was perfect. We HIGHLY recommend it if you haven’t ever done it. (P.S. Because it's a national park, we were able to use our senior passes. Woo hoo!)

MISCELLANEOUS

SAY WHAT?

“Toilet out of order. Please use floor below.”

In a Laundromat: “Automatic Washing

Machines. Please remove all of your clothes

when the lights go out.”

In a department store: “Bargain basement

upstairs.”

“Would the person who used the step-ladder

yesterday please bring it back or further steps

will be taken.”

Outside a second-hand shop: “We exchange

anything. Bicycles, washing machines, etc. Why

not bring your wife along and get a wonderful

bargain?”

In a wild animal park: “Elephants please stay in

your car.”

On a leaflet: “If you cannot read, this leaflet will

tell you how to get lessons.”

On a repair shop window: “We can repair

anything. Please knock hard—the bell doesn’t

work.”

Newspaper headlines:

“Man kills self before shooting wife and

daughter.”

“Police begin campaign to run down jaywalkers.”

“Miners refuse to work after death.”

“Juvenile court to try shooting defendant.”

”If strike isn’t settled quickly, it may last a while.”

Hope you had a laugh or two . . .

Keep Fresh Strawberries

Fresh Longer Now that strawberries are in “season,” keep them fresh

longer by following this tip: As soon as you arrive

home with your new batch of strawberries, put them in

a bowl with water and about 1/2 cup vinegar. Let sit for

about 10 minutes, then rinse with clear water and store

in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Home Remedies That Really Work

1. Drink two glasses of Gatorade to relieve a

headache.

2. Use a drop of Elmer’s Glue to remove a splinter.

Just glue over the splinter, let it dry, then the glue

will pull the splinter out.

3. The spice, Turmeric, contains a powerful phyto-

nutrient called curcumin, that when added to your

diet, helps to ease joint plan, swelling, and blocks

joint destruction due to arthritis. Try adding this

spice to sautéed vegetables, rice, potatoes,

scrambled eggs, chili, or add a teaspoon to olive oil

to brush on asparagus or corn-on-the-cob.

This was our club’s first organized rally to the Pala RV Resort, and the grounds are spectacular. Once the

trees have had a chance to grow, there will be lots of shade. Despite morning haze, the temps during the

days there were in the 80’s. Very pleasant. Evenings were slightly chilly, requiring a few bonfires to keep

the conversations going. The clubhouse was new, clean, and handy, despite a rather huge problem with the

oven temperature, requiring breakfast to be served VERY late on Saturday morning.

The “puzzle” was completed almost entirely by Bri, who spent most of Saturday in the clubhouse working

on it. Later, we were pleasantly surprised by a visit from Bill and Maureen Ball (who currently live outside of

Tuscon) during Happy Hour.
