The Rocket Review Quarterly
Summer Edition
To All,
Three weeks from
yesterday, Sunday, August
8th at 2 pm, we are hav-
ing our last show plan-
ning meeting at Richard
and Barbara Brown‟s.
Richard lives at
6489 Crawford Street in
Burke, VA 22105. The
phone number is 703-
569-3240.
We did this last
year to provide a location
more convenient to our
Northern Virginia Olds
Club folks. Richard and
Barbara have invited us
back!

If we don‟t see you on
August 8th at the Brown‟s
for the show planning
meeting, we look forward
to seeing all those
Oldsmobiles at MCC for
the All-GM show!
Thanks,
Cory
Joe Padavano sent
us proof that his
‘62 F-85 wagon did
indeed make it to
the OCA Nationals
in Sturbridge, MA.
Come see it at our
annual All-GM
show at Montgom-
ery College on Sat,
August 14th.
Joe P. about the award
art was duly noted and
fixed as best as possible,
being that I told the Ral-
lye folks what to fix over
the phone, and some
detail is lost when the
art is reduced to the two
plaque sizes.
We are still look-
ing for GM trivia ques-
tions for the door prizes,
in addition to the actual
door prizes themselves!
Harbor Freight stores
continue to advertise
coupons for free flash-
lights, so if you get or
see any, please redeem
them for prizes.
The Capitol City Rockets is the Suburban Maryland, DC,
Northern Virginia chapter of the Oldsmobile Club of America.
The Capitol City Rockets originated in 1989, and is currently
operating in its 21st year. We split monthly meetings (currently)
between Kilroy’s Bar and Grille off the Braddock Road exit of
495 in Northern VA and Branded 72 BBQ in Rockville, with
one peer judged show co-hosted each year with the Metro Buick
Club. The club currently consists of 39 members, 22 from Vir-
ginia, 12 from Maryland, 3 in Florida, and 1each from DC and
West Virginia. A membership form is located in the back of this
newsletter. One need not own an Oldsmobile to join, and dues re-
main $15 dollars per year, payable by November the 1st, either by
check or using the PayPal button on our Hemmings.com website.
Current membership in the Oldsmobile Club of America is a re-
quirement of CCR membership, as we are required to submit club
rosters to OCA for yearly insurance coverage for our events.

Keeping the Legend Alive
No, Not that major award! The Golden Quill from Old Cars Weekly.
RR Quarterly Wins Major Award—Scott Phillips The Rocket Review
Quarterly won the “Golden
Quill Award” for
“Subcompact” newsletters
from the weekly publication
Old Cars Weekly for the
2009 editions of the news-
letter. The awards are given
out yearly in April, and are
published both in Old Cars
Weekly and on their website.
Other types of pub-
lications included full-size
(usually national club news-
letters like OCA‟s Journey
With Olds), mid-size, which
are regional hobby-type
publications (such as some
of the AACA‟s regional
newsletters), and then
“subcompact” local types
like ours. Award winners
must submit their publica-
tions to both an external
judge and Old Cars Weekly
staff, and winning is not a
given. For example, in
2007 the Rocket Review
earned an honorable men-
tion from OCW, but in
2008 did not.
The Golden Quill
Award is the only one of its
type for local hobby publi-
cations, and so it is a very
nice compliment to be rec-
ognized by Old Cars Weekly.
In the December 17, 2009
issue, a portion of one of
the Jetfire engine rebuild
articles was published in the
“Club News” section of
OCW, while the Subcom-
pact Golden Quill award
was announced in the April
12, 2010 edition. The club
also received a certificate
from Old Cars Weekly,
which I will bring to a fu-
ture meeting.
I am proud of the
accomplishment for the
club, and thank usual con-
tributors Cory Correll, Ken
Quincy, Steve White, and
Gary Sutherlin for some
great pieces the last few
years. Please let me know if
you have a story or pictures
you‟d like to share. I‟ll even
write it for you if that‟s not
your thing. Help keep the
Rocket Review great!

Annual Spring Dust Off, April 17th, 2010
This really nice Ralleye 350 came and joined us for the
day. It was Paul Fredrick’s and it was pretty much all
original.
Paul Fredrick looks over Rod Cornell’s 442,
whose top was down on a sunny day.
The Annual Spring Dust Off
Cruise was held for the 3rd
year at STAR Pontiac, Buick,
GMC in Leesburg, VA.
Though it was a little windy,
and the turn out was less
than in previous years, the
quality of cars was nonethe-
less superb. We saw some
cars and owners we had not
met before, and had a really
nice time getting the rides
out early.
The big news was that Joe P rolled out (literally)
his newest toy, while my Jetfire F-85 made it, as
did Owen Griesemer’s wagon in the background.
Vern Parker and a friend came to lend their sup-
port to our Spring Dust Off event, bringing with
them the two oldest rides of the day.

CCR Spring Picnic at Owen Griesemer’s
One of the wildest attendees was a friend of Owen’s
who brought his Jeep stakebed. It’s a very utilitarian
vehicle with extremely low gearing.
New club member Brian McDonald drove out from
Ashburn to Middletown and brought his ‘70 Cutlass
hardtop he’s been restoring.
Our first annual spring pic-
nic was held May 22nd. Gra-
ciously hosted by Owen
Griesemer at his Middle-
town, MD home, the event
was a fun outing for several
club members and friends.
Some of the Maryland folk brought out the
Oldsmobiles we hadn’t seen. By the end, all of
the tops were up as the rain began in earnest.
A 442 parts car? You bet. Owen and Mark Levine
found it. While it runs and drives it’s got some
pretty serious rust...
The Rocket Review Volume 20, Issue 4 Page 5
I found a ‘62 wagon for Joe P. out west.
Great glass, trim, and interior panels
and a nice taillight bezel I scored.
Cars and trucks from the 40’s and 50’s
at Fremans, like this Olds, are almost
as plentiful as the mosquitoes...
Near Rapid City, SD, I ran across the
famous Motion Unlimited Museum
and Car lot.
Just south of Rt. 90 on the way to the
Badlands, SD, Motion Unlimited has
over 300 classics for sale.
Montana Classic Cars had a lot just
west of Bozeman, MT. Check out nice
wagon and lots of trucks, too.
In Deadwood, SD, the Phillips boys got
bit by the racing bug and beat me into
the pits!
This is some of the 5,000 (!) classics at
Freman’s Auto in Whitehall, MT.
This is a nice mid-60’s Delta 88 with
pretty much all parts intact. You can
tour the yard, they pick the parts.
My area of interest, a ‘63 Cutlass con-
vertible for sale as a whole vehicle only.
Very complete and very little rust out.
Some Dry Western Iron
On a Recent Trip to Montana and South Dakota, I visited Freman’s Auto Salvage (Whiteehall, MT), Mon-
tana Classics (Bozeman, MT), and Motion Unlimited (Rapid City, SD). All on the web, and all GREAT!
