THE ROCKS INTERMODAL PARKMcKEES ROCKS, PENNSYLVANIA
Combining the flexibility of road with the dependability of rail
is located in McKees Rocks,
the first suburb west of
the City of Pittsburgh,
accessible by roads, rail,
and barge. Its proximity to
state and federal highways
and the economic engine
of downtown Pittsburgh
provides convenient access
to the entire Pittsburgh
MSA. And, the Intermodal
transportation options
offer strategic advantages
to companies looking to
expand or relocate their
business.
WHAT IS INTERMODAL/ MULTIMODAL RAIL?
THE ROCKS INTERMODAL PARK
INTERMODAL ›› Intermodal transportation involves using multiple modes to move
container freight, without any handling of the freight itself while changing modes. It allows
shippers to combine the long-haul efficiencies of freight rail with the short-haul flexibility of
trucks to achieve cost-effective, efficient and reliable freight transportation service.
MULTIMODAL ›› Multimodal transport is the transportation of goods under a single
contract, but performed with at least two different means of transport; the carrier is liable
for the entire carriage, even though it is performed by several different modes of transport.

PITTSBURGH CSX INTERMODAL TERMINAL ››
The Pittsburgh Intermodal Rail Terminal includes CSX investment of more than $60 million to redevelop a brownfield site where the former Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Rail Yard operated for more than a century.
The terminal is located in Stowe Township and the Borough of McKees Rocks, near Pittsburgh.
The project has received broad-based support from local, county, state and federal officials; economic development associations; and community organizations.
Construction is expected to be completed mid-2017.
The new facility will connect shippers in western Pennsylvania directly to CSX’s extensive intermodal freight rail network, shifting long-haul freight from highways to railways and strengthening the transportation infrastructure that supports the regional economy.
› The terminal is an important connection in CSX’s $850 million National Gateway public-private partnership, which is creating a more efficient and environmentally friendly transportation network. It allows shippers to take advantage of the economics of double-stacked containers between Mid-Atlantic ports and Midwest consumers.

TRANSPORTATION & LOGISTICS
DIRECT RAIL ››
THE ROCKS Intermodal Park has direct rail serviced by Genesee & Wyoming railroad which
interchanges with Norfolk Southern and CSX. This combination will create transportation options
and savings.
INTERMODAL with MULTIMODAL ››
The CSX Intermodal terminal in conjunction with THE ROCKS will add efficiencies to
rail-road-distribution freight networks: less time, lower drayage, and speed from rail to
staging-warehousing-distribution channels. DIRECT RAIL & DIRECT ROAD access has the
potential to significantly reduce the drayage by using yard hostlers and lowboy trailers running
on the shared local, public road between CSX and THE ROCKS facilities.
RIVER ››
Port/barge access is 0.4 miles away (Ohio River, milepost 4.0 RDB).
With 35 million tons of cargo, Pittsburgh is the second busiest inland port and the 17th busiest port
of any kind in the nation.
Pittsburgh is larger in tonnage than Newport News, Philadelphia or Seattle.

200 miles of commercially navigable waterways.
It includes the three major rivers: the Allegheny, the Monongahela and the Ohio and a system
of 17 locks and dams.
The Port of Pittsburgh offers full intermodal services and supports over 200 river terminals and
barge industry service suppliers, including privately owned public river terminals.
