Contains the Continental Divide, which determines the directional flow of rivers.
Rugged mountains stretching from Alaska almost to Mexico; high elevations.

• The Rockies were traversed by westward-bound pioneers; the main pass across the mountains is South Pass. Investigate the Oregon, Morman, and Santa Fe trails and share your findings in scrapbook or journal format.
• Compare and contrast American Indian tribes of the area using a written or illustrated format.
• Discover traditional American Indian tribal ceremonies and recreate costumes used. Include a detailed description of the materials traditionally used.
• Investigate the Iditarod races and the history behind them. Share your findings in a written and mapped out format.
