Early Years Michael Mick Jagger formed a

band with his friends so that they could sing their favorite songs

They enjoyed early black RampB as well as 50s mainstream rock (especially Chuck Berry)

They called themselves Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys

Keith Richards lived nearby and sat in on some rehearsals

Early Years There was a subculture in London of RampB lovers Alexis Korner was a local RampB musician who opened up the Ealing Club His drummer

was Charlie Watts Brian Jones hung around the club He was trying to establish himself as a guitarist with

the stage name Elmo Lewis Elmo Lewis joined the Blue Boys and they debuted as an intermission band at The

Marquee Club a local jazz club Group consisted of Jagger Richards Jones Ian Stewart (piano) Dick Taylor (bass) and

Mike Avory (drums) Showing theyre love of blues they called themselves The Rolling Stones which was a

Muddy Waters song Taylor quit and was replaced by Wyman Charlie Watts took over on drums

First SinglesRecord Contract

1963 - Brian Jones signs managers Andrew Loog Oldham and Eric Easton He managed to work out a larger salary than the others as leader of the Rolling Stones

Dick Rowe from Decca who famously turned down the Beatles decided to take George Harrisons advice and sign the Stones

May 1963 - The group releases their first single Come On a Chuck Berry song

They premiered on TV wearing suits like The Beatles

Gaining Popularity As Beatlemania was gaining steam the band got

resentful and stopped wearing the suits

Ironically theyre first big single was LennonMcCartneys I Wanna Be Your Man which went to 3

1964 - The Stones went on to form a counter-image to the Beatles Theyre stage act became more sexually suggestive and they went with a wilder scruffy look

Oldham suggested that Jagger and Richards become a songwriting duo like LennonMcCartney Their first collaboration was Tell Me (Youre Coming Back) This track was featured on their first LP The Rolling Stones

First US Tour

June 1964 - The Stones embark on their first US tour

They had barely made the US charts with Not Fade AwayI Wanna Be Your Man so their arrival at the airport only drew hundreds of fans not thousands

Without an invite from Ed Sullivan they performed on Dean Martins show and were mocked by the host

Before leaving the US they stopped by Chess studios in Chicago where they met Muddy Waters Chuck Berry and Willie Dixon They recorded Its All Over Now This was their first 1 in the UK

1964 The band toured Europe and had a much more successful US tour

They performed on the Ed Sullivan Show this time Ed Sullivan was upset that Mick didnt wear a jacket and required he wear one the next time they were invited to perform

Jagger saw James Brown perform during this US tour

Jagger was so captivated by Browns dance moves that he decided to incorporate this type of movement into his stage show

1965 - Satisfaction

(I Cant Get No) Satisfaction was released and went to 1 in the US

Sexually themed although Jagger claimed it wasnt necessarily about sex but the lack of any kind of spiritual artistic or sexual satisfaction on the road

1965 - 66

Allen Klein offers to become Oldhams business manager so he can focus on the artistic aspects of the group

1965 - the band releases Decembers Children (and Everybodys) Get Off My Cloud was the next 1 single Brian Jones begins to use LSD with Richards 1966 - the band releases a new single 19th Nervous Breakdown

The B-side to this was a song called As Tears Go By This had a similar style to Yesterday which The Beatles had just released

1966 - Aftermath

4th studio album

First to feature all JaggerRichards songs

Paint It Black hits 1 in the US

Under My Thumb

Touring schedule became very intense with very little rest

Live performances started to gain the reputation for wild and violent behavior by their fans

Between the Buttons is released The album featured Ruby Tuesday and Lets Spend the Night Together

Lyrics become more and more sexually overt

Scandal - Mick Keith and Brian were all arrested on drug charges

The band tries to out-Beatle the Beatles with their response to Sgt Pepper

Their Satanic Majesties Request

Oldham decided to leave the band during the sessions as he was sick of the drugs dominating the band This left them to produce the album themselves

The band took a lot of chances in experimenting with sound and arrangements

Many thought that the album was a poorly planned answer to Sgt Pepper

The band also released an answer to all you need is love with We Love You

The band went back to basics following this failed attempt at psychedelia

Back to Basics

Jumpin Jack Flash is the next single to be released This marks a return to form with the R amp B rock style

Shortly after the band released Sympathy for the Devil

The song was inspired the book the Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov The book is about a smooth-talking Satan who goes to Russia to observe the effects of the revolution

This song along with Street Fighting Man was featured on Beggars Banquet - 1968

Brians Death

After another drug arrest Brian was kicked out of the band He was on a fast decline for years at this point

Mick Taylor who had played with the Bluesbreakers was invited to join the band

Taylor was set to debut on July 5th at a free Hyde Park show

Brian died three days before this in a swimming pool He had drowned while intoxicated

The band performed poorly during Taylors debut

Rock and Roll Circus

Stones organized the Rock and Roll Circus concert in 1968

Featured guests such as John Lennon (and Yoko) The Who Clapton and Jethro Tull

Concert was taped for a broadcast but the Stones were unhappy with it and decided to keep it off the air

Altamont

In mid-1969 the stones went on tour and decided to highlight their RampB roots

Invited BB King and Ike and Tina Turner to open for them on tour

Tour supported the Let it Bleed album

Tour got negative publicity as the prices were high and the band would normally show up hours late

The tour was being filmed for a documentary

Altamont

Trying to make good and end the tour with a big finish the Stones held a free concert at Altamont Raceway in CA

Jagger invited multiple chapters from Hells Angels to act as security

Crowd quickly reached 100000

Santana and Crosby Stills and Nash performed to increasingly violent crowd

The Angels were beating everyone with pool cues and other weapons

Once the Stones went on stage the crowd grew more violent

After starting sympathy for he devil they had to stop multiple times to try and calm people down

They then played Under My Thumb when 18-year old Meredith Hunter got into a fight with the Angels

They stabbed him in the neck and then stomped on him

Hunter was one of 3 who died that concert The others were run over by a car as they slept on the ground Others suffered injuries

1971 Sticky Fingers is released Features a controversial song Brown Sugar

1972 Exile on Main Street is released This is a double disc

Although they tried to play smaller venues they had created a monster and continued to play for large rowdy crowds

1973 the band released Goats Head Soup which was recorded in Jamaica They had another 1 with Angie

1974 - Mick Taylor struggles with heroin addiction and quits the Stones Ronnie Wood joins the band

1978 - Some Girls is released It features a disco-inspired single Miss You
