Saint Patrick Parish is a Christian community of disciples in the Roman Catholic tradition, called by Jesus, united in Eucharistic worship and growing in faith, hope and love. Nourished through the sacraments and strengthened by God’s transforming love, we are empowered to know the gospel message and to bear witness to others. As Christian stewards, we are thankful for God’s many gifts and we commit ourselves to share our time, talent and treasure in Christ-like service within our parish com-munity and beyond. We seek God’s blessing and guidance to be faithful to this mission.
MISSION STATEMENT
THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: Confessions are heard on Sat-urday afternoon from 4:30 to 5:15 PM and anytime upon reasonable request. THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM: Second & fourth Sundays at 1:00 PM. Expectant parents may contact the parish office to arrange for the baptism seminar class on the third Thursday of every month. The class is held in the Religious Education Building, Room 7 at 7:30 PM. Adults are baptized and confirmed at the Easter Vigil after completing the stages of the Rite of Christian Initiation. RCIA – Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: A process for those who wish to enter the Catholic Faith, or for present Catholic individuals who after being baptized need to receive the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Confirmation. For more information, please call our Parish Office. THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY: Since Catholic marriage requires a time of preparation, arrangements should begin at least six months before the proposed date of the wedding to allow for the Marriage Preparation Program and Natural Family Planning (NFP). PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK: If you are planning to enter the hospital for surgery, experiencing a prolonged or serious illness, or home-bound, call the parish office to arrange for the sacraments of recon-ciliation, communion and anointing at home. Communal anointing of the sick is celebrated at Mass during the Advent and Lenten seasons. WELCOME TO NEW PARISHIONERS: The Saint Patrick faith community warmly welcomes you! Please introduce yourself to the celebrant of the mass you are attending as you leave the church so that, on behalf of the entire community, you may be welcomed. You can register at the parish office and receive any information needed from the office receptionist.

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
First Reading: Isaiah 50:5-9a Isaiah describes the willingness of the Suffering Servant to submit to the persecution of his enemies. This willingness stems from true faith in God, and the knowledge that the Lord will always be his help. Second Reading: James 2:14-18 James states that if some one is hungry and you wish them well but do not help them, you have done them no good. He compares this to stating your faith, without backing it up with your actions. He reminds us that we must show our faith through our good works. Gospel: Mark 8:27-35 Jesus taught his disciples that as the Messiah, he had to suffer much, be put to death, and rise three days later. Peter began to disagree and Jesus reprimanded him for judging by human standards rather than by God’s. He told them that whoever would be willing to lose their life for the sake of Jesus and the gospel, will in fact preserve their life forever.

From Fr. Charlie Dear Friends in Christ, Whenever a saint is canonized, it is always a great reminder that God calls every one of us to holiness of life. If we remember that anyone in Heaven is a saint, then God calls every one of us to be saints, because – of course - we all want to go to Heaven. On Wednesday, September 24th, Pope Francis is going to canonize Junipero Serra. He will be the thirteenth saint to be canonized associated with what either was at the time, or subsequently became the United States of America. Three of the eight North American Martyrs died here in New York State – Saint Isaac Jogues, Saint Rene Goupil, and Saint Jean de Lelande. Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini was born in Italy, but came to New York and became the first American citizen to be canonized. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton was born in New York City. After her husband died, she converted to Catholicism and founded the Sisters of Charity. Saint John Neumann was born in what is now the Czech Republic. He came to New York City and later became the bishop of Philadelphia. Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne was born in France, became a nun, and then spent the last half of her life ministering to the Native Americans of the Midwestern United States. Saint Katherine Drexel was born into a wealthy Philadelphia family. She literally gave her fortune away and founded an order of nuns specifically to help African Americans and Native Americans. Saint Theodore Guerin was born in France. After becoming a nun, she went to Indiana, where she was known for her advancement of education for all. Saint Damien de Veuster was born in Belgium. After becoming a priest, he ministered to lepers on the island of Molokai in Hawaii. Saint Marianne Cope was born in Germany. At the age of one, she and her parents came to the United States, where they settled in Syracuse. Later on, as a nun, she helped Saint Damien with his work with the lepers. And lastly, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha was born in New York State, and became the first Native American to be canonized. And now, Saint Junipero Serra will become number thirteen. Miguel Jose Serra y Ferrer was born on the island of Majorca in 1713. His parents were poor farmers, but they were very devout. As a young boy , Miguel heard the call of Jesus Christ, “Come and follow me.” At the age of sixteen, he left home and entered the Franciscans. It was then that he received his name in religion, Brother Junipero. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1737. For many years, he taught philosophy at the Franciscan seminary. During this time, Father Serra felt God’s call to give his life to the missions. In 1749, Father Serra left Spain and went to Veracruz, Mexico. After a period of training, he began his life as a missionary. He began in Mexico, but then was called to present day California. Father Serra was responsible for the foundation and spread of the Church on the West Coast of the United States. He founded twenty-one missions and he converted thousands of Native Americans. He also taught them sound methods of agriculture, cattle raising, and arts and crafts. He died at the age of 70. We rejoice in the canonization of another American saint. Saint Junipero Serra, pray for us! God bless you!
