OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD

The bulletins that you thoughtfully brought back to mefrom your vacation time around the country remindedme that there are many parishes in the United States

that do not have a priest to celebrate Mass on weekday orSunday mornings. The reality of the decline in vocations tothe priesthood has not hit us so dramatically here, althoughin nearby Albany, they are faced with it. And it won’t be toolong when Rockland County is experiencing what otherplaces are. Here at St. Gregory Barbarigo, we are blessed atpresent to have the services of Monsignor Weber and theSalesian and Oratorian Fathers. I imagine that there areparishes that might envy our situation. That is why I am veryhappy to be able to host my classmates at a Mass ofthanksgiving next Monday.

Each year around the anniversary of theirordination, New York priests who studied at Dunwoodieusually come together to celebrate another year of blessingsin the vineyard of the Lord. We rotate through the classaccording to the alphabet, each one of us taking his turn tohost a Mass and dinner at his parish. It is a wonderfultradition that we have been keeping for 36 years. 2017 is myturn. So, the other members of the class of 1981 have beeninvited to Garnerville to pray together and then enjoy asimple class dinner at the parish house. I would like you tojoin us that night if you can, for Mass at least. I wish I couldinclude you at the dinner table, but . . . .

As you know, my class was ordained on Hallowe’en.It is a unique distinction that we hold. Since most of us willbe out trick or treating that day, the day before ourordination anniversary is a good compromise. Most of us arepastors and some are in special work. You will get thechance to meet all of us if you come. Presently, FatherRonald Altrui is in the diocese of Scranton, Father GeorgeBaker is at St. Mary in Obernburg, Father Joseph Bisignanois at St. Patrick in Bedford, Jimmy Bona is now a layman andretired from Colgate University, Father Ivan Csete is alsoretired and serving the Hungarian community, FatherWilliam Elder is a professor of canon law at Dunwoodie,Father Joseph Emmanuel was ordained in Sri Lanka in 1981and is at St. Joan of Arc in Sloatsburg, Father Arthur Golino isat St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Father John McDonagh who isretired and Father Michael McLoughlin from St. Columba inHopewell Junction. I hope you can join us to celebrate.

ALL SAINTS AND ALL SOULS On November1, Catholic people celebrate the lives ofpeople, both famous and obscure, butespecially those known only to their friendsand families who are now living with God inheaven. It is a holy day of obligation forCatholics to attend Mass which will be

offered at 7:00 AM (for those who must leave early for work),9:00, (attended by the regional school children), and 7:30 PM(for those returning from work). The Commemoration of All theFaithful Departed will be on November 2 when we rememberall the souls in purgatory and offer Mass for our beloved dead. There is a special envelope for ALL SOULS’ DAY to enroll thenames of your family and friends in your packet and in thenarthex. Masses at 7:30 at Immaculate and 9:00 AM at SGBwill be offered for the repose of the souls enrolled on that day.

MASS FOR THE BEREAVED The Church from earliest times hasguarded the words of Scripture that “it is a holy and wholesomething to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins.”(2 Mac 12:43). Every year on All Souls’ Day and throughout themonth of November the Church prays, especially in the Mass, for all the faithful who have been called home to God throughdeath. On Saturday morning, November 4 at 9 o’clock, we willbe celebrating a MASS FOR THE BEREAVED. As a community unitedin faith, we share in the loss of our parishioners who havedied. Everyone is invited to this Mass. A letter of invitationhas been sent to families who have experienced the death ofa relative during this past year. If you suffered a loss and thefuneral was in another parish, please take part in this day. Wehope to see you.

PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY USA October 29 isthe national observance of PriesthoodSunday USA which was inaugurated in2002. This is the time each year to expressappreciation and gratitude to all the priestswho have served the people of St. GregoryBarbarigo. It is a way to allow Catholics to

recognize good priests who, day in and day out, do anoutstanding job in serving them in parishes across America. The focus is on the place of the priesthood as a central realityin the life of the Church. The shortage of priests makes themless visible and, consequently, less prominent. Pleaseremember your priests: Father LaMorte, Monsignor Weber, theSalesian and Oratorian Fathers; and also the families of FathersMichael Berry OCD, Dennis Donovan SDB, Michael Keane,Michael Ramos OFM Cap, Kenneth Riello and ArchbishopThomas Wenski and seminarian Thomas Jerome Krug who areall members of our parish; and thank them for what they do tobring the Lord to the faithful through the sacraments. Also, visit the web site, www.nypriest.com. If you have a son orrelative in the priesthood, please call the parish office thisweek so that their names can be included in this enrollment.

HERE IS A THOUGHT Come to Mass early enough not todisrupt. Leave late enough not to insult. Worship reverentlyenough not to distract. Dress proudly enough not to offend.
