Roger Bourgeois, SSS (Happy 90th Birthday) Special Intention UPDATED NOTES – BASED ON YOUR SUGGESTIONS:• Family members, with a pyx, blue ritual book and missalette,
share Holy Communion to each other from the Mass they attend. Retrieve Holy Communion in the communion procession/line, sharing how many hosts you are taking home by indicating the number of hosts you need to the Communion Minister. The minister will place hosts in your pyx. Then you will place in your purse or pocket the pyx before taking the host in your own hand. Once nursing homes in the area are able to receive visitors, this ministry will start again. Sadly, it is not possible yet.
• If you are gluten intolerant, please come to the sacristy before Mass to alert the sacristan or the priest who will place a chalice for you or a low-gluten host.
• If you are hearing impaired, we have listening devices at the piano to assist you.'
MASS INTENTIONS/STIPENDS OUR SUGGESTION BOX – MAY I SUGGEST?
As part of our 2020 Pastoral Plan, our Saint Paschal Baylon Pastoral Staff and Pastoral Council are always interested in your ideas, suggestions, improvements and more! In the Fickel Narthex there is a “yellow” suggestion box where you may write your suggestion. Through our “ombudsman,” Tom Kelley, you are able to share your input through an email: [email protected]. We appreciate your recent feedback and evaluations of our procedures for the COVID Mass refinements.
FROM THE PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE…
19th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: This week’s Sunday readings may help us answer the question: Where is God when there is all these natural disasters? It seems we have had so many disasters lately: from insects taking over, floods, earthquakes and of course THE virus. The Book of Kings reading and our Gospel remind us: God is here! Jesus is with us in the boat, this
boat that we are staying on. Do not fear! We can be so tempted to give in to anxiety and worry. Let us hear the words, read the words, and know these words: Do not fear, for Christ is among us! Always, even more so, it seems, in the stormy waters of life. Let us work on our trust.
UPDATED LOGO FOR 50 YEARS: Instead of my picture today, you see our updated logo. In 2020, we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of our church building. To highlight this and our annual theme, which usually includes a song, our communication team, led thru the inspiration of our Principal Raguz and the song, “Go Light Your World,” written by Christopher Rice. Our team came up with “Go Forth & Light Our World.” The inspiration comes from for our church building, being a lighthouse, the scripture passage from Matthew 5:15, “No One lights a lamp and puts it under a basket” and the reality that we are called to go forth and shine our faith. The building inspires the church (the People of God) to be church! So, to highlight these aspects, you will hear me during the dismissal rite of Mass, now share with you these worlds. These words call us to our baptismal roots, when we accepted that candle and were called to let our faith burn brightly.
ASSUMPTION CELEBRATIONS: We love Mary! As usual we will have special celebrations to honor the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven. While this is not a day of obligation this year, because it is on a Saturday, and for that matter the obligation to attend Sunday Mass has been dispensed, or relaxed until COVID is over, we still will have our regular Holy Day of Celebration. The Masses are:
•Friday, August 14: 4:30 p.m. (Vigil, with the vigil readings)
•Saturday, August 15: 9:00 a.m. or 12:15 p.m. (with the day readings)
THE NINETEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 9, 2020
GRATITUDE AND LIVESTREAMING: We are so grateful to the many who stop by the parish offices and place their envelope in the Business Office mail slot on their way to shop, mail in the donations, or who are using our online giving. It is helping us stay steady and maintain our parish’s finance. THANK YOU for continuing to be such good and faithful stewards. The extra special donations to our new livestreaming system are also much appreciated. We are in line waiting for the installation.
CANCELLED PARISH PICNIC – STILL HONORING FR. ROGER: Due to city and diocesan restrictions that have been extended to outdoor gatherings, we will neither have a parish picnic at Highland Heights City Park, nor on Green Knight Field. While it is sad, we cannot truly honor Fr. Roger and his 90th birthday in this special way, we will still have a special 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass for him, on his actual birthday, Sunday, August 16, if you are unable to attend, please do mail him a card or well wish through email ([email protected]) to share your greeting and wish him good health and well wishes for the next 90 years.
PRAYERS FOR OUR NEW BISHOP: We look forward to getting to know our new bishop, the Most Reverend Edward Malesic. He will be installed as our new bishop on Monday, September 14 at a special Mass at the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist. The event, due to COVID restrictions, will be livestreamed so that all may participate in this way.
THANK YOU TO OUR DISCIPLES/VOLUNTEERS: Last week, I highlighted our newly created/revised “pandemic ministering” Pastoral Staff and the excellent support and way they live their faith with us, and serving with us to promote the mission of our parish. This week, I highlight the countless volunteers. I cannot thank our volunteers who share their time and talent with us. Who would have ever thought we would have a new ministry of cleaning the church after each Mass? Initially, folks signed up in advance; seeing them, others came forward to join in the work. Besides them, our Manna, Helping Hands, sacristans and other liturgical ministers, Society of Saint Matthew, Society of Saint Therese of the Little Flower, Social Action Commission, Bible Studies, Ladies Guild, PTO, Athletic Association, Aggregation (Associates) of the Blessed Sacrament, Art & Environment, Bible Camp, Scouts, Pastoral and Finance Councils, Spiritual Formation Commission, our leaders, and so many members, have all come forward to serve regularly at church or thru Zoom, staying connected and working for the good of our community. THANK YOU for your discipleship and care. Our parish continues to thrive and not allow the virus to keep us down. Our SPB Green Knights are extremely dedicated. Thru our physical distancing and healthy steps, we are still serving the Body of Christ and that means so much to so many. You have been so kind to me to share your gratitude and appreciation. Let us continue to pray for them and for one another.
In Christ our Eucharist,
Reverend John Thomas Lane, SSS, Class of SPB 1979Pastor – @jtlanesss or [email protected]
P.S. We are planning a very different (Green) Knight to Remember this year – not in person at LaVera. Do not forget to email me to be part of this committee to plan a new version of the event. Let me know so that I may send you a Zoom Meeting link – for this Tuesday night, 6:30 p.m.
OUR STEWARDSHIP: SUPPORTING OUR CHURCH THROUGH TIME,
TALENT & TREASURE
We are so grateful for those who are continuing to volunteer (who can because of their health and age) and those who are tithing in the following ways:• FIRST COLLECTION• SECOND COLLECTION (SPB LANE LOAN
REPAYMENT AND CAPITAL MAINTENANCE):o PARISH DEBT: Thanks for your support of the “top of
the month” maintenance and roof loan fund. This really helps us pay off our loan (only $60,684.41 on our one loan left!). This also helps us with unexpected capital maintenance expenditures, like a water pipe in the school, that connected to the city water/sewer lines. This was a $9,116.06 unforeseen repair as the city updates the water system.
You are also helping us make our bills – that are over $80,000.00 each month just for our regular expenses, not including salaries. We appreciate your sacrifices and stewardship during these hard times!

Because of you, thousands of people across our diocese have found help and hope at Catholic Charities during these challenging times. Requests for assistance have increased drastically since the
pandemic began. Hot meal programs that transitioned to a takeout model saw an increase of up to 50%. Saint Augustine Hunger Center is delivering more than 500 meals per day to those in need, pre-packaged pantry distribution has increased up to 3x more than before the pandemic began, and the Saint Elizabeth Center shelter is practicing social distancing by moving all clients to motels. Thanks to your generosity, we are able to respond to these requests, serving more people and changing more lives than we ever thought possible. Catholic Charities Updates: Pledged $128,380.00 and Contributions so far are $98,794.00 as of June 30, 2020. Our Goal is $162,641.00. Thank you on behalf of those served by Catholic Charities. If you have not yet made your gift, please visit www.CatholicCommunity.org/donate or contact Sarah Yantek by email at [email protected] or call 216-696-6525, ext. 1049.
