Jesus is our hope and courage

Dear Friends!

Is there really hope in this world? Every day we hear about the misery of the poor, about injustice and aggression against life – from conception to its natural end. We hear about the crisis of the family, and cultural and moral relativism. We hear about scientific and tech-nological development that goes forward at all costs and in every direction, without consider-ing the ethical consequences.

Still, in the face of problems, persecution, suffering, and injustice, we as Christians are convinced that what is needed is a message of hope. And the greatest bearer of hope is Christ himself!

Through baptism, Christ gives us the task of spreading the message of hope in today’s world. Our Christianity requires us to decide how we are going to respond to this call in our own lives.

Lent is a good time to reflect on such questions. During the months of March, April, and May, God gives us a special opportunity to focus on Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection, which give our lives their ul-timate meaning. By experiencing Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrec-tion, we are strengthened to give our message of hope to the world. With these thoughts, I wish you a grace-filled Lent and a joyful cele-bration of Easter.

Fr. Carroll Parker is in the USA for his Sabbatical. After spending sev-eral days with his brothers and sisters, he travelled to the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas, for his renewal program. All the best, dear Carroll Parker. You remain in our prayers until you return to Denmark.

On 1 April at Vor Frue Kirke, Father Leo Kertz will celebrate the 50th anniversary of his ordination.

The anniversary of a priest’s ordination is actually not about him. It’s about the priesthood, which he represents. It’s about Christ, whom he exemplifies. It’s about the wonderful work of a priest and the way he touches the lives of so many.

We thank you, Father Leo, for your fidelity, your loyalty to our church, for your gentleness and humor, and for the wonderful things you have done for so many people. Congratulations!

Ad Multos Annos! (To a long and happy life!)

The Sacrament of Reconciliation

The season of Lent reminds us that we should work for our conversion of the heart. The following points appear in a leaflet that I brought home with me from the Shrine of Lourdes. –Fr. Thevaraj

To get the most from your confessional encounter with Christ, you should prepare well. You should arouse in yourself a deep, true sorrow for your sins, how they have offended against God who loves us infi-nitely, and how they have hurt our fellow men who so need our help. You should not try to ferret out each and every sin – a serious attitude of sin will usually came to mind immediately – nor should you waste time in useless regrets.

Please remember that the Sacrament of Reconciliation is above all an act of God’s love. It is a personal moment to be lived in a relationship of love with God. It is not a routine to gone through, but very much part of the personal renewal that takes place in each person.

You are invited in the light of God’s love to recognize the sinfulness in your life and to have a true sorrow for these sins and a firm intention to avoid them in the future. These elements are essential to a proper and meaningful celebration of the sacrament.

Sin is not merely a series of failures. It is also your participation in what is actually evil:

unbelief, indifference, selfishness

violence, contempt for the weak, eroticism

racism, neglect of the poor

money seeking, wastefulness

a spirit of pride and superiority

Every sin, in one way or another, has a community dimension. It is something which tarnishes the Body of Christ, which together, we are. Every sin ought to arouse in us feelings of humble regret and a confi-dent request for pardon.

“Today my father is waiting for me, I must return to Him....

“Then the prodigal son came to his senses and said: I will leave this place and go to my Father and say: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.

“While he was still a long way off, his Father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. The Father said: "Quick, bring out the best robe. this son of mine was dead and has come back to life.” –Luke:15

The Pope's Lenten message

Pope Benedict XVI’s message for Lent is that when people are open to God’s love, they can “love with him, in him and like him.”

In a message titled, “Believing in charity calls forth charity,” Pope Benedict writes, “When we make room for the love of God, then we become like him, sharing in his own charity. If we open ourselves to his love, we allow him to live in us and to bring us to love with him, in him and like him.”

The Pope notes that “faith, as gift and response, causes us to know the truth of Christ as love incarnate and crucified, as full and perfect obe-dience to the Father’s will and infinite divine mercy towards neighbor.

“Faith implants in hearts and minds the firm conviction that only this love is able to conquer evil and death,” says the pontiff.

Pope Benedict highlights that “charity ushers us into the love of God manifested in Christ and joins us in a personal and existential way to the total and unconditional self-giving of Jesus to the Father and to his brothers and sisters.”

Father Leo Kertz, OMI

With heartfelt thanks for your service in Denmark

Father Leo Kertz has spent almost all of his 50 years as a priest ministering to people all around Denmark, and in do-ing so, he has touched the lives of many.

Father Leo was born February 24, 1936, and grew up on a farm in the state of Missouri, near the banks of the Missis-sippi River. He was the fifth of eight children (three boys and five girls), and attended primary school in the small town of Zell, Missouri, where he was taught by the Sisters of the Most Pre-cious Blood.

Between 1949 and 1955, he attended St. Henry’s Minor Seminary in Belleville, Illinois, a preparatory school for potential candidates to the

priesthood. Of 42 first-year students, Leo was one of three that eventually became priests.

Leo attended the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate Novitiate in Godfrey, Illinois, in 1956 and 1957. The Novitiate is located near a wall of limestone bluffs also overlooking the Mississippi River.

Between August 1957 and March 1963, he studied philosophy and theology at Pine Hills Major Seminary, located on the Mississippi coast of the Gulf of Mexico. In March 1963,

11

he was ordained there by Bishop Jo-seph Bruninni, then Auxiliary Bishop of Natchez.

In August 1963, he began the work in Denmark that would keep him busy for the next 50 years. His first stop was Herlev. In 1967, he moved to Randers, returning to Herlev in 1972. In 1982 and 1983, he served even farther north in Nuuk, Greenland. Upon his return to Denmark, he took up his duties in Viborg, where he remained until 1986. Between 1986 and 1992, he worked in Ålborg, and between 1992 and 1999, he called Randers home. He returned in July 1999 to Herlev, where he has remained until today.

Father Leo describes Our Lady’s Church as “a microcosm of the Mis-sionary Oblate congregation, where people from many different back-grounds come together to be united in faith.”

On the 50th anniversary of your ordination, Father Leo, we thank you for your loving service to the Church in Denmark! May God continue to bless you abundantly in your priestly ministry!
