Next week we will take up the Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services. The AMS relies solely on private donors in support of its mission: “serving those who serve” and provides pastoral care to families who serve or have served

our nation with distinction as members of the U.S. military. This collection will provide the Gospel, the sacraments and other forms of spiritual support to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces wherever they serve and to veterans who are in VA medical centers. The AMS receives no government funding for its services and programs including the Co-Sponsored Seminarian Program which provides priests for the military chaplaincy. After prayerfully considering a generous donation please return the enclosed envelope in next weekend’s second collection. Thank you.

“As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD” Joshua 24:15 January 7th and 8th Page Three

Traditions and devotions are part of our great treasure of faith. Such a tradition is the practice of asking God to bless our homes on the Feast of the Epiphany which we celebrate today. If you have not done this before I invite you to adopt this custom in your family. It is very simple and a great tradition to involve others in and to hand on to them. The family gathers to ask God’s blessing on their home and on those who live in or visit the home. It is an invitation for Jesus to be a daily guest in our homes, in our comings and goings, our conversations, our work and play, our joys and sorrows.

A traditional way of doing this is to use chalk to write above the home’s entrance, 20 + C +

M + B + 17. The letters C, M, B have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the three magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin words Christus mansionem benedicat, “May Christ bless the house.” The “+” signs represent the cross and 2017 of course is the year.

Instructions for Blessing the Home:

Using the blessed chalk mark the lintel of your front door (or front porch step) as follows: 20 + C + M + B + 17 while saying:

The three Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar followed the star of God’s Son who

became one with us to save us from sin and death. May Christ bless our home and remain with us all our days until we are led to the fullness

of eternal life in the dwelling place of the Father. Amen.

Then offer the following prayer: Visit, O blessed Lord, this home with the gladness of your presence.

Bless all who live or visit here with the gift of your love; and grant that we may manifest your love to each other and to all whose lives we touch. May we grow in grace and in the knowledge and love of you; guide, comfort, and strengthen us in peace, O Jesus Christ,

now and forever. Amen.

“Chalking the door” is a way to celebrate and literally mark the occasion of the Epiphany and God’s blessing of our lives and home. With time the chalk will fade. As it does we let the meaning of the

symbols written sink into the depths of our heart and be manifest in our words and actions the Latin words, Christus mansionem benedictat, - May Christ bless the house.

It is so easy, and a great reminder, that we invite Christ to be part of all that we do and say,

that we depend on Jesus to uphold, strengthen and protect us from harm, and that we place all who we love and live with under His care.

As we conclude this Christmas Season, I offer my thanks to all who work hard to make our

celebrations and place of celebration so beautiful—our parish staff, the liturgical ministers (servers, lectors, choir, cantors, accompanists, ushers, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion), the members of the Art and Environment team, the collection counters, and all who contribute of their time, treasure and talent. Like the Magi, you bring Jesus your gifts and with a loving heart He accepts your love and service. Please know that Mass will be offered in Thanksgiving for your service and devotion.

Peace, Fr. Richard

READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY

Reborn through the waters of Baptism and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, we embrace

Luke Francis Pejman daughter of Jubin and Amy

claimed now for the fullness of eternal life. Faith Formation for 1st through 8th grades resumes January 8th. We will begin with Eucharistic Adoration immediately following the 10:30am and 6pm Masses in the church. Fr. Richard will provide a catechesis on Eucharistic Adoration and lead all in adoring Jesus through prayer, song and meditation.

This is an important opportunity to contemplate the amazing gift Jesus gives of Himself in the Eucharist to each one of us.

GETTING READY FOR SUNDAY

Join Fr. Richard for a deeper insight into the Scriptures for Sunday Mass. Let the texts come alive for you by gaining an understanding of their context and the culture within which they were written. Discussions are on-going every Thursday at 2pm to 3:30 pm and repeated from 7:30pm to 9pm in the Pastoral Center Library.

First Reading: Isaiah 49:3, 5-6 This reading is a short passage from the second song of the Servant of the Lord. The Lord will show his glory through His servant whose mission is to restore Israel and bring salvation “to the ends of the earth.”

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:1-3 Paul sends greetings to the people of Corinth, who have been called to be holy and consecrated in Christ. Gospel: John 1:29-34 When Jesus visits John, John recognizes Jesus as the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” John further indicates that Jesus is truly the Messiah and “God’s chosen One.”

Parishes require certificates of sponsorship for Godparents and Confirmation Sponsors. Upon request, a Certificate of Eligibility will be issued only to those who are confirmed Catholics; registered in our Parish, regular participants at Mass, and

validly married in the Church (if applicable). It is difficult to have to refuse anyone but it has had to be done at times. You should be registered with the Parish at least 6 months before we can issue you a certificate to become a Godparent or Sponsor. It is a privilege to be asked to take on this responsibility and to participate in the sacramental life of the Church.
