We conclude this weekend the Christmas Season with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. This year there was a beautiful stretch in the liturgical days of the Season and so after today the trees in the church will come down, the manger and figurines will be stored away and poinsettias will be looking for homes to continue to grow in. The manger scene in the rectory and my chapel will remain until February 2nd, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Actually, this year it will be until February 5th as I hope to be in Haiti to visit our sister parish and Fr. Theo from January 31st to February 4th for our annual visit there. This visit will be to check that the water filtration system is doing what we intend and to check that the foundations of the church are stable enough to support the renovations to the church building. Our team this year will include Kevin Dempsey, who guided the filtration system production, shipping and installation, and Jean Philippe Simon who was born in Haiti and who resides in New Jersey. JP is an engineer, so his expertise and contacts with other professionals in Haiti will be key for the next project. I look forward to returning to Nanpol and to see how things have progressed since the last visit. I hope that you will check out the updated photos on our parish website. While we were enjoying Christmas here, the parishioners at Nanpol were also able to enjoy a better Christmas through the ongoing support parishioners give to our sister parish. A number of parishioners make a monthly contribution which enabled Fr. Theo to buy food items and gifts for the parishioners. As with many other aspects of our twinning experience, this was another first for the parishioners and villagers at Nanpol. Please do take some time to check out the photos sent by Fr. Theo on our website. Their gratitude is a gift of love for us as we seek to make their daily life and festive occasions more special. Last Sunday the 10:30 and 6:00pm Masses provided a beautiful opportunity for the children of our parish to learn more about Adoration and the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. If you were there you know that of which I speak. It was so beautiful. On the 3rd Friday of each month a similar experience is offered for families with the Rosary and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. After the Friday gathering there are games and dessert in the gym. I hope that more families will consider this opportunity for their children. More opportunities will be provided for our children to be included so that their Faith Formation can be richer and their love is encouraged to grow for the Lord. Some months ago I wrote to Bishop Serratelli with a request. I have always believed that the grace of the Sacraments we receive are essential to our own growth in faith (of course this is not a personal revelation, the Church has always taught this). While the policy of the Diocese has been that that Sacrament of Confirmation be administered in the Spring of the Sophomore year or the Fall of the Junior year of High School, I have been of the mind that sooner is better than later. Also, considering the fact that we are surrounded by dioceses where the Sacrament of Confirmation is offered in 8th grade I asked the Bishop that we be allowed to lower the age of reception for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop sent a letter agreeing with my insights and has given permission for the Sacrament of Confirmation to be received in 8th grade for our parish. Perhaps it will become the Diocesan practice in the not too distant future. Therefore, the current 9th and 10th grade class will be welcomed to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in May of this year. The 9th grade candidates and their parents have been informed about this and there is a meeting for the 9th grade parents on Sunday to discuss this further. Then next year, 2020 (yikes!), the current 8th grade and 7th grade will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and after that it will be 8th grade each year. I am pleased with this adjustment as the gifts of the Holy Spirit are more urgently needed and especially for our younger members who have many challenges to navigate. You may have noted as you drive in that materials for the replacement of part of the roof are in the process of being delivered. Again, thank God for the generosity of Bill Hosford who left part of his estate to the parish or we would have to borrow for this essential project. I am not sure when the work will take place, as you might imagine it will be weather dependent. It does interest me that the article which was in this section of the bulletin about the costs and scope of the many projects that have been attended to or that are in the works did not garner many comments, maybe two that I remember —at least not to me. I sincerely hope that folks are at least reading this once in a while as it is a venue by which much of the nuts and bolts of parish life and projects is shared with you. As we conclude this beautiful Christmas Season, my sincere gratitude to all who make not just this Season but each Season possible through their time, treasure, talent and dedication. Let us continue to pray for one another. Peace, Fr. Richard

The end is also a beginning…

READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY First Reading: Isaiah 62:1-5 Isaiah prophesizes that Jerusalem will again be held in high esteem by God. He states that all nations will witness its glory. He compares a groom's joy toward his bride to the joy that God will feel toward Jerusalem. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 Paul discusses the different gifts and talents bestowed upon different individuals. He explains that each individual receives various talents so that everyone can contribute something to society. Gospel: John 2:1-11 Jesus and Mary attended a wedding where Mary informed Jesus that there was no more wine. At first he said it did not concern him, but then he turned several jugs of water into wine. His disciples were also present, and believed in him more strongly after they witnessed the first sign of glory he revealed to them.

INCLEMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS When weather conditions cause closures and make conditions for travel difficult or hazardous, please call ahead to the parish office (908-647-0118) to check that Mass and parish events are able to take place as scheduled. In some cases it may be more prudent to offer Mass at 12 noon on a day when weather patterns may have changed for the better. When schools are closed due to weather conditions parish events, with the exception of Mass, will also be cancelled.

Check before you go so that you can be in the know.

Abortion, the social justice cause of our times: “Abortion was the number one cause of death worldwide in 2018, with more than 41 million children killed before birth” as reported by Worldometers based on the latest statistics published by the World Health Organization. Globally, 23 percent of all pregnancies were ended by abortion. There were more deaths from abortion in 2018 than all deaths from cancer, malaria, HIV/AIDS, smoking, alcohol and traffic accidents combined. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The theme of the annual March for Life in DC this year is “Unique from Day One”, emphasizing the science of pre-born Life. The March aims to end abortion by “uniting, educating and mobilizing pro-life people in the public square.” The March commemorates the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade (1/22/73) that invalidated state laws and made abortion legal and available on demand in the United States.

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT IN OUR PARISH

Our church is open daily from 7:30am to 9:00pm, closing on Saturday and Sunday after the evening Mass. On the third Friday of each month we have Adoration and the praying of the Rosary particularly focused on families – come, bring your children and grandchildren and teach them to speak to Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament.

On First Fridays we have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament after the 8:30am Mass through the night until 8:00am on Saturday.

If you are awake because you have many concerns, come talk to Him. Jesus is absolutely and truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament – many, many Saints became Saints because they knew and responded to this truth. “Do you realize that Jesus is there…especially for you- for you alone? He burns with the desire to come into your heart.” St. Therese of Lisieux
