There are families who are constantly in need of basic food items that most of us usually shop for weekly. However, some families are just not able to do that. The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry has been in existence for over 20 years and we have provided help to many families by welcoming them to the Food Pantry in order to provide them with the necessary items to feed them and their children. We serve an average of 45 families monthly. The Food Pantry is open to “clients” on the third Wednesday of each month. It takes coordinating, planning and organizing to run the pantry and to serve all these families. Now we need your help! Our volunteer coordinator is retiring and we are looking for someone who is interested in social outreach, especially to the poor and the hungry. We are looking for a new Food Pantry Coordinator. If you are interested in finding out more about this ministry please call Sr. Elsa Jeronimo at 908-2 9 5 - 4 9 4 4 o r b y e m a i l t o [email protected]

Five times a day ordained ministers, those in Consecrated Life, and many in the Laity pray the Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office. It is the daily prayer of the Church, marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer. The Hours are a meditative dialogue on the mystery of Christ, using scripture and prayer. The Hours consist of the Office of Readings, Morning Prayer, Midday Prayer, Evening Prayer and Night Prayer. Within the Hours is reading and reflecting on the Scripture—psalms and readings from Scripture along with various prayers of praise and petition which are prayed by the individual for the good of the whole Church. I have the great blessing of being able to pray the Divine Office in my chapel in the rectory. While John Calabro was here during the summer we prayed the Liturgy of the Hours together and it was good to have another to share that time of prayer with. In addition to the texts from Sacred Scripture, within the Office of Readings is to be found writings by and on the Saints from the life of faith. The most brilliant insights, consolations, and encouragements are offered in those writings. To be honest, there have been times when the readings speak clearly and, at other times perhaps due to my own tiredness or lack of connectedness, the writings do not seem to speak directly to me. On Saturday, August 11 I read from the writings of St. Catherine of Siena (March 25, 1347 – April 29, 1380) from a dialogue, On Divine Providence, under the title of The Bonds of Love. St. Catherine, who is a Doctor of the Church, showed deep insight into the mystery of death and lived a very interesting life at a most challenging time. What follows is the section I read from and which was most edifying and helpful to me: My sweet Lord, look with mercy upon your people and especially upon the mystical body of your Church. Greater glory is given to your name for pardoning a multitude of your creatures than if I alone were pardoned for my great sins against your majesty. It would be no consolation for me to enjoy your life if your holy people stood in death. For I see that sin darkens the life of your bride the Church—my sin and the sins of others. It is a special grace I ask for, this pardon for the creatures you have made in your image and likeness. When you created man, you were moved by love to make him in your own image. Surely only love could so dignify your creatures. But I know very well that man lost the dignity you gave him; he deserved to lose it, since he had committed sin. Moved by love and wishing to reconcile the human race to yourself, you gave us your only-begotten Son. He became our mediator and our justice by taking on all our injustice and sin out of obedience to your will, eternal Father, just as you willed that he take on our human nature. What an immeasurably profound love! Your Son went down from the heights of his divinity to the depths of our humanity. Can anyone’s heart remain closed and hardened after this? We image your divinity, but you image our humanity in that union of the two which you have worked in a man. You have veiled the Godhead in a cloud, in the clay of our humanity. Only your love could so dignify the flesh of Adam. And so by reason of this immeasurable love I beg, with all the strength of my soul, that you freely extend your mercy to all your lowly creatures.

St. Catherine of Siena shows a deep love for the Church at her time. Plagued by corruption, laxity in witness and great confusion she knew that beginning with her own conversion she could plead with God for the conversion of those who were not living a unitive relationship through Christ. St. Catherine was strong and determined as were many of our sisters and brothers in the Communion of Saints and, while it certainly was not easy for them, it was because of their witness that they afforded hope and encouragement to others.

In these days I pray that you have drawn closer in prayer to Christ, especially as we listen these Sundays to the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John, referred to as the Bread of Life discourses, where Jesus urges us to find strength and renewal in and through His abiding presence, especially in the Eucharist and at Mass. May He draw us close, strengthen our hearts, renew our courage and confirm our faith by His merciful gaze. Let us continue to pray for one another.

Peace,

Fr. Richard

May your Mercy be on us O Lord, as we place our trust in You

READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY

First Reading: Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel and told them if it did not please them to serve God, then they must decide who they would serve. The people claimed that God had brought them out of slavery and protected them on their journey. Therefore, they would serve, the Lord their God, and no one else.

Second Reading: Ephesians 5:21-32 or 5:2a, 25-32

Husbands and wives should love one another as Christ loved the Church. They should nourish and care for each other as Christ cared for the church. Through the union between the two, they become one.\

Gospel: John 6:60-69 Many of Jesus' followers were still disturbed by his teaching of the living bread, which they could not yet fully understand. Jesus explained that the Spirit gives life, and flesh is unimportant. Some of the disciples decided to leave. Jesus asked if the Twelve also wanted to leave. Although they do not completely understand yet, they have enough faith in Jesus to stay because they believe he is God's holy one.

LIFE FACTS...DID YOU KNOW?

One promotor of the contraception movement was Paul Ehrlich’s book, The Population Explosion, published in 1968. Predictions that overpopulation would deplete the world’s resources led governments to mandate population control measures, such as China’s one child policy.

Today, worldwide fertility rates have dropped from 5.0 to 2.4 children per woman. In the US, the CDC reports the fertility rate at 1.76 children per woman, a sharp drop from 2.08 a decade ago. Europe’s rates are lower, resulting in economic and labor effects from under population! (Steven Mosher, Columbia Magazine, July 2018.)

Pope Francis has approved a new revision of paragraph number 2267 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, according to which “a new understanding has emerged of the significance of penal sanctions imposed by the state,” thus “the death penalty is inadmissible.” The decision was announced by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in a ‘Letter to the Bishops’ dated 1 August and signed by the Prefect, Cardinal Luis Francisco Ladaria.

The new text reads: 2267. Recourse to the death penalty on the part of legitimate authority, following a fair trial, was long considered an appropriate response to the gravity of certain crimes and an acceptable, albeit extreme, means of safeguarding the common good.

Today, however, there is an increasing awareness that the dignity of the person is not lost even after the commission of very serious crimes. In addition, a new understanding has emerged of the significance of penal sanctions imposed by the state. Lastly, more effective systems of detention have been developed, which ensure the due protection of citizens but, at the same time, do not definitively deprive the guilty of the possibility of redemption.

Consequently, the Church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that “the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person”,[1] and she works with determination for its abolition worldwide.” Pray for an end to all attacks on the sanctity of each life from conception through natural death.
