2018 BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL HERE I AM LORD!

The 2018 Bishop’s Annual Appeal is officially kicking-off this weekend with the theme Here I Am Lord! Please support this important annual cause that helps so many people throughout our Diocese. The Bishop’s Annual Appeal

supports the work of our Catholic Charities: seminarian education, priests’ extraordinary health care needs as well as Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests’ retirement residence and our urban elementary schools. These are all critically important ministries that touch many lives, and so you are invited to make a pledge today. Thank you in advance for your generous support.

40 Days For Life begins September 26th and ends on November 4th. Prayer vigils will be held outside Planned Parenthood, 196 Speedwell Ave., Morristown 7am to 7pm 7 days a week. Your prayers, sacrifices and witness matters in the fight for the defense of Life. To participate, email [email protected] or call 973-627-1654.

September 8th and 9th Page Three

A few years ago I was visiting a parishioner who was having some serious health issues. Like many people I am privileged to minister to in those moments, her faith was strong and grew stronger even as her health was deteriorating. She has gone home to the Lord after a very faith filled life. In one of my visits as she spoke of her love for Jesus she broke into song. The words she sang were from a hymn that her grandmother sang and taught her. She sang the refrain over and over again with such joy, hope and trust. After my visit I could not get the words or the tune out of my head and so searched to find the full song. It is called, Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus and was written by Helen Howarth Lemmel in 1922. The verses she wrote are as beautiful as the refrain. 1. O soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see? There’s light for a look at the Savior, and life more abundant and free! Refrain: Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace. 2. Through death into life everlasting He passed, and we follow Him there; o’er us sin no more hath dominion— for more than conquerors we are! 3. His Word shall not fail you—He promised; Believe Him, and all will be well: Then go to a world that is dying, His perfect salvation to tell! If you are interested a quick google search will bring you to listen to it. Turning and keeping our eyes on Jesus has always been the heart of discipleship. It is even more urgent in these days of great trial. It is important for us to be reminded that we have been given a share in the ministry of Jesus, as Paul wrote to the church in Corinth, we are God’s co-workers (1 Cor. 3:9) and are called to live out our life in Jesus with this truth in mind. While there has been a lot of pain, scandal, division and disheartening events these last weeks we continue to seek the face of Jesus, who never hides from us. As a community we not only seek but we also reveal the face of Jesus. I was reminded of that this week when I received an email with photos from Fr. Theo from our sister parish in Haiti distributing school supplies and backpacks to the children there. This is a first for these children and it is a result of the goodness and generosity of this faith community. From your contributions from the Lenten appeal, monies have been used to buy supplies for the children from us—backpacks, erasers, notebooks, pencils, crayons, and paper. Next Sunday the second collection will be used to continue assisting our sister parish. I have heard from those who have worked in twining experiences for many years how impressed they have been to see how quickly things have progressed in our sister parish through the generosity of those who have contributed to the mission. This is revealing the face and presence of Jesus to those in need. Thank you. This afternoon, September 9th, Julian Ochrymowych will receive the Vivere Christus award at the Cathedral for his dedication to the parish. Julian is the lead person on our parish team of collection counters. He is an excellent Lector proclaiming the Word of God with passion and clarity. He is also a hard working member of the Art and Environment Committee where he and others spend many, many hours of planning and execution of those plans, especially at the high holy days, to make our worship space beautiful. In your name, I thank Julian for his dedication and this well deserved award. Later this month I plan, God willing, to join other parishioners, family and friends of John Calabro for his ordination to the Order of Deacon in Rome. Through his many years of being involved in this community John has had the face of Jesus revealed to him by you. Responding to Christ's invitation, John will lay down his life for the Good Shepherd and dedicate his life in love and service to Christ and His holy people. The ordination will take place on the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul which is an added bonus of grace. I know that you will keep John and the other 39 ordinandi in your prayers. God willing, John will be ordained a priest at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Paterson on May 11, 2019 with his First Mass offered here the following day, May 12th. If any parishioner would like to send a note/card of congratulations to John I will be happy to take it with me. Your encouragement to him is the continued revelation of the face of Jesus. Prayerful congratulations to his parents, John and Judy, for raising their son to seek Christ's will for his life. Soon our Faith Formation classes will resume. We continue our mission to provide a safe environment for those entrusted to our care. The staff and I are clear in informing any adult who has regular contact with a child/teenager in parish events must first undergo a criminal background check and participate in sessions for the Protection of God’s Children—no exceptions. Those adults who do not comply are simply not permitted to volunteer in our youth programs. We have held firm in this and pledge to continue to do so. Some adults who have been turned away because of this criteria may tell you that we have turned their child away—that is simply not true. We will not, however, allow any adult to have regular contact with youth in our programs without doing all we can to ensure the safety of children. Let us pray and act for reform, renewal and healing. Keeping our eyes fixed upon the face of Jesus, let us continue to pray for one another. Peace, Fr. Richard

READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY

First Reading: Isaiah 50:5-9a Isaiah describes the willingness of the Suffering Servant to submit to the persecution of his enemies. This willingness stems from true faith in God, and the knowledge that the Lord will always be his help.

Second Reading: James 2:14-18 James states that if someone is hungry and you wish them well but do not help them, you have done them no good. He compares this to stating your faith, without backing it up with your actions. He reminds us that we must show our faith through our good works.

Gospel: Mark 8:27-35 Jesus taught his disciples that as the Messiah, he had to suffer much, be put to death, and rise three days later. Peter began to disagree and Jesus reprimanded him for judging by human standards rather than by God’s. He told them that whoever would be willing to lose their life for the sake of Jesus and the gospel, will in fact preserve their life forever.

THE HOLY RELICS OF ST. ANTHONY

Prayer petitions and holy cards will be distributed by Friar Mario which he will then bring back to the Pontifical Basilica in Padua and place them at the tomb of St. Anthony. Once there, the Friars will gather to pray for the Saint’s intercession upon our intentions and petitions. You are invited to come and ask for St. Anthony’s intercession not only for the loss of material things but also for the loss of faith, family harmony, health, hope and peace of mind.
