THE HOLIEST WEEK OF THE YEAR

April 8th and 9th Page Three

We enter Holy Week in union with our sisters and brothers in Christ throughout the world. Personally I believe that more grace abounds in this week than at any other time in the year. I pray that none of us will approach it as simply an ordinary week, as it certainly leads us to a most extraordinary realization in the celebration of Easter. On Palm (Passion) Sunday Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem, to accomplish the great events of our salvation, is recalled. The commemoration on this day, with the blessing and the procession of palm branches, is not just an historical re-enactment of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, but marks the solemn entrance of the Church, the Body of Christ, into Holy Week. On Monday at 7PM the Chrism Mass is offered at St. Philip the Apostle Church, Clifton. Any who are able to attend are encouraged to do so. On Tuesday evening from 7:30—9PM there will be 4 priests here for our Holy Week celebration of the Sacrament of Penance. This is a wonderful opportunity to be truly prepared for the Renewal of Baptismal Vows at Easter.

Lent ends with the beginning of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, at which time the Church enters into the Sacred Triduum. The Mass of the Lord’s Supper will begin at 7:30PM. During this Mass, the Washing of Feet takes place commemorating the washing of the Apostles’ feet by Jesus at the Last Supper. Following the Prayer after Communion, the Blessed Eucharist is taken in procession throughout the church to the Altar of Repose in the chapel. The faithful are encouraged to spend some time in adoration throughout the remainder of the evening until Midnight. The period of adoration ends with prayer at Midnight. After Midnight, there is no adoration.

On Good Friday, when ‘Christ our Passover was sacrificed’ the Church meditates on the Passion of her Lord and Spouse, venerates the Cross, commemorates her origin from the sight of Christ on the Cross, and intercedes for the salvation of the whole world. On this day, in accordance with ancient tradition, the Church does not celebrate the Eucharist; Holy Communion is distributed to the faithful during the celebration of the Lord's Passion alone. Good Friday is a day of penance to be observed as a day of obligation in the whole Church through abstinence and fasting. The Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion and Death begins at 3PM in silence. During the Liturgy, the account of the Lord’s Passion from the Gospel of John is proclaimed and the Veneration of the Cross takes place. The Stations of the Cross are prayed at 7PM on Good Friday, especially for those who are unable to participate in the 3PM Liturgy.

On Holy Saturday no Mass is offered until the Great Vigil of Easter at 8PM. The blessing of Easter food and baskets takes place at Noon on Holy Saturday in the gym. In accord with ancient tradition, Holy Saturday night is a night of vigil for the Lord, and as the memorial of the holy night of Christ’s resurrection, the Vigil celebrated is the ‘mother of all holy vigils.’ The Church this night awaits the Lord’s resurrection and celebrates it with the sacraments of Christian initiation. ‘The entire celebration of the Easter Vigil takes place at night. It should not begin before nightfall; it should end before daybreak on Sunday.’ This rule is to be taken according to its strictest sense (Circular Letter on Holy Week, 78). The order of the Easter Vigil is so arranged that after the service of light and the Easter Proclamation (which is the first part of the Vigil), Holy Church meditates on the wonderful works which the Lord God wrought for his people from the earliest times, (the 2nd part or Liturgy of the Word), to the moment when, together with those new members reborn in Baptism (the 3rd part), she is called to the table prepared by the Lord for his Church, the commemoration of his death and resurrection, until he comes (the 4th part) (81.)

Sadly, I have heard people comment that they do not come to the Easter Vigil as it tends to be too long. I have watched movies that were too long, sat in meetings that were too long, stuck waiting for events that were too long but I have never felt that the Easter Vigil was too long in that it was a waste of time. Each year when the Vigil has concluded I experience the great joy of faith which is offered to every believer. I also feel a twinge of sadness knowing that it will be another year before that celebration of the Easter Vigil will take place again. On Easter Sunday, Mass will be offered at 8:30 and 10:30AM. There is no evening Mass here on Easter Sunday. During the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday Mass we renew our Baptismal Promises. Lent serves to prepare us for that moment of renewal and rededication. I am most grateful for your dedication and support of this parish. May the Lord bless each of us abundantly in this sacred time. May your Holy Week and Easter be filled with graced encounters.

Peace, Fr. Richard

READINGS FOR EASTER SUNDAY First Reading: Acts 10:34a, 37‑43 In this passage, Peter testifies that he and his followers saw the miracles performed by Christ, witnessed His death, and believe in His resurrection. Now they will proclaim to all that C h r i s t i s t h e S o n o f G o d . Second Reading: Colossians 3:1‑4 Paul tells the Colossians that they will appear with Christ in glory. They should be mindful of things above rather than things on earth. G o s p e l : J o h n 2 0 : 1 ‑9 In vivid detail, John tells us that when Mary Magdalene visited Christ’s tomb, the tomb was empty. She told the apostles, who ran to the tomb, and saw the “wrappings” on the ground. The disciple who entered first “saw and believed.”

April 2017 Dear friends in Christ, During this Lenten season, as we reflect on the life, death and resurrection of our Lord, it is fitting that a collection is taken on Good Friday to assist Christians in the Holy Land. The places where Jesus lived, died and rose again hold a special meaning to us as Catholics and deserve our support. The Holy Land collection is allocated for educational and ecclesial projects, programs and ministries in the Middle East. Last year, the collection supported 29 parishes, four homes for orphans and three academic institutions. In addition, it provided financial assistance to schools, helped educate men for the priesthood, rehabilitated 80 homes for Christian families and provided senior care facilities in Bethlehem and Nazareth. Dozens of shrines connected to the life of Jesus, and so important to our faith, were preserved thanks to the Holy Land collection. This important work is made possible with your help. As part of our Lenten call to almsgiving, I ask you to please join me in making a financial offering to this special collection when it is taken up on Good Friday.

If you are a Catholic adult who has not completed the process of initiation through the Sacrament of Confirmation and would like to, please contact Fr. Richard to find out what steps are involved to make this happen. Confirmation establishes us more deeply in our relationship to God as his children, unites us more closely to Jesus Christ, pours out the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit into our soul, strengthens our bond with the Catholic Church, and gives us the power we need to be true witnesses of Christ through living, sharing, and defending our Faith.
