MASS AND ANOINTING OF THE SICK
BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL IN GIVING, WE RECEIVE
The 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal is currently underway. This year the theme of the Appeal is “In Giving, We Receive”. By being generous with our God-given gifts, we not only help people in need, but we also help
ourselves. Jesus reminds us of the blessings that come from being good stewards.
The Bishop’s Annual Appeal supports four causes: our Catholic Charities agencies; seminarian education, Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests’ retirement residence; and our inner-city area elementary schools. You can help make this year’s Appeal an even greater success by making a generous pledge today.
Every gift is important, valued and changes lives. Whatever you do to help is a profound blessing!
September 9th and 10th Page Three
This week we observe the 100th anniversary of the 5th apparition of Our Lady to the children at Fatima. This is how the event was recorded by one of the visionaries, Lucia, “A crowd estimated at 20,000 observed atmospheric phenomena similar to those of the previous apparitions: the sudden cooling of the air, a dimming of the sun to the point where the stars could be seen, and a rain resembling iridescent petals or snowflakes that disappeared before touching the ground. This time, a luminous globe was noticed which moved slowly and majestically through the sky from east to west and, at the end of the apparition, in the opposite direction. The seers saw a light and immediately following this, they saw Our Lady over the holm oak.
Our Lady: Continue to pray the Rosary to obtain the end of the war. In October, Our Lord will also come, as well as Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and Saint Joseph with the Child Jesus, to bless the world. God is pleased with your sacrifices, but He does not want you to sleep with the ropes; wear them only during the day. (The children were wearing ropes around their waists as a sacrifice for sinners.) Lucia: They have requested me to ask you for many things, for the cure of some sick persons, of a deaf-mute. Our Lady: Yes, I will cure some, others not. In October, I will perform a miracle for all to believe. And rising, she disappeared in the same manner as before.” From the writings of Sr. Lucia. Pope Francis has granted a plenary indulgence opportunity for the 100th anniversary of the Fatima apparitions throughout the centennial year. To the faithful who visit with devotion a statue of Our Lady of Fatima solemnly exposed for public veneration in any church, oratory or proper place during the days of the anniversary of the apparitions, the 13th of each month from May to October 2017, and there devoutly participate in some celebration or prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary. In addition, the faithful must pray the Our Father, recite the Creed and invoke Our Lady of Fatima. The Act of Consecration to Our Lady of Fatima will be prayed at the 8:30AM Mass on Wednesday, September 13th. For the 100th anniversary of the final apparition on Friday, October 13th Mass will be offered at 8:30AM and at 7PM. After the 7PM Mass we will have the candlelight procession with the statue of Our Lady of Fatima. Please mark the date and time so that as many as possible, especially families and children, may participate in this special observation and devotion to Our Blessed Mother. We continue to pray for our sisters and brothers in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. The tendency to move on to the next event can be great if we are not caught in the middle of such devastation. For those who have been directly affected it will take much longer to come back to any resemblance of life as usual. As mentioned at Mass last weekend, the Bishops of the United States have asked that a special collection be taken in each parish to assist the work of Catholic Charities in aiding those displaced and in need in the aftermath of the Hurricane. The collection will be taken here at all Masses next weekend, September 16th and 17th. Please be as generous as your means allow. Please continue to pray for those who mourn their loved ones, for those whose homes and personal belongings have been destroyed, for those who have been displaced, for those who are overwhelmed, and for those who are there to assist and offer hope.
As we observe the anniversary of September 11, 2001 let us also prayerfully remember those who died, those who so heroically gave their lives for others, the first responders and all who aided in recovery efforts, and the families who still carry the burden of grief from that day. Let us pray and act for peace in our time, in our homes, communities and among nations in a world fraught with tension. The oldest known prayer addressed to the Mother of God was found on an ancient Egyptian papyrus dating from around the year 250. Today, known in the Church as the Sub tuum praesidium, the prayer is believed to have been part of the Coptic Vespers liturgy during the Christmas season. Originally in Greek, the prayer is best translated as:
Beneath your compassion, We take refuge, O Mother of God: do not despise our petitions in time of trouble: but rescue us from dangers, only pure, only blessed one.
May we offer this prayer often during these days that we may know the tender love and intercession of the Blessed Virgin. Be assured of my prayer for your families and you daily, especially at Holy Mass, the joy and privilege of my life. Peace,
Fr. Richard
Rescue us from dangers, only pure, only blessed one.
September 9th and 10th Page FourREADINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY
First Reading: Sirach 27:30—28:7 Sirach advises all to forgive the faults of their neighbor. Only by forgiving the sins of others, can a person expect to be forgiven his sins.
Second Reading: Romans 14:7-9 Paul stresses that no one is his own master; we are responsible to the Lord, and we belong to him in both life and death.
Gospel: Matthew 18:21-35 This narrative points out the difference between mercy and justice. When Peter asks how often he should forgive someone who wrongs him, Jesus answers, “…not seven times: I say seventy times seven times.” Jesus then narrates the story of the king who was merciful to his official by forgiving him all his debts, but this same official showed no mercy to his own servant.
