Letter from the PresidentGreetings, neighbors.

If you missed the Rock/Pop/Jazz Concert a few weeks ago, you missed a great time and great music. Many thanks to director James Martin for pulling this together. We are hoping to make this an annual event, so keep your ears open for the next opportunity.

I hope you have noticed some additional improvements taking place at the Community House. As I write this column, the concrete has been laid for the new plaza and we expect the Charles McGee sculpture to be erected and the engraved bricks to be installed by September 7th. We also expect additional landscaping and lighting to be put in place at the Plaza in the near future. A picnic is planned for the opening on September 9th. See page 4 for the notice. In addition, improvements funded by the Kresge Grant have started on the Soccer fields. The most obvious being the new goalposts and new equipment that will be used by Rosedale Soccer this Fall. The old goal posts have been used since the late 1980’s – they certainly needed replacement. Additional improvements will be made to the fields. The Playscape and the Baseball field improvements will be implemented over the next year.

I want to thank two of our long-time volunteers who have played an important role in our community for at least 4 years. Judy Barkey, with the assistance of her husband Mark, has been our faithful distribution manager for the home delivery of the Tattler in North Rosedale. The Barkeys have been in charge of dividing the 1600 or so Tattlers each month into separate packets for each carrier, distributing those packets to the carriers, filling out check requests for the stipend paid to the carriers, and distributing the checks to each carrier. In addition, Judy would find new carriers as needed, instruct them, and monitor the carriers’ performance to make sure the Tattlers were getting delivered as soon as possible to each home in the Park. We all owe Judy & Mark a great debt for the many hours they have spent serving the community in this low profile, demanding role and we have been lucky to have them handle these responsibilities for so many years. It is volunteers like this that really make our Association possible. Thanks for all your work, Judy and Mark!

Volunteers and grants help us to do many good things in the neighborhood and at the Community House and Park, but fundraising is still necessary to help cover our regular expenses and to supplement the grants we are obtaining. We have three important fundraisers coming up this fall – each of which will be great fun and help us reach our goals.

• The annual Steak Roast on Friday September 14 is one of our most popular annual events. It is an opportunity to connect with our neighbors and friends, find out what they did this summer and have a great dinner for just $30. Beverly Frederick has done a super job of leading the committee organizing this event, so come on out and enjoy this great tradition. Contact Susan Steigerwalt at 313-549-9523 for tickets or go on line at nrpca.org/steakroast.

• A new fun & fundraiser is the Mystery Theater on Sunday, September 30th. You can spend a Sunday afternoon solving a mystery put on by a professional group of actors with a lot of interaction with the audience. See details on page 5.

•Finally, on Saturday, November 3, the NRPCA Board and the Legacy Committee is sponsoring a Reverse Raffle, Silent Auction and Dinner. We had the last one of these in 2015 to raise funds and celebrate the new addition to the Community House. We are bringing it back to raise funds to help complete the Kitchen renovation and the replacement of our 60-year-old furnaces, which have been on their “last leg” for the last 20 years. Both these projects are key parts of the renovation of the Community House so it can continue to be the center of the community for many more decades, and the Reverse Raffle will be a lot of fun, even if you don’t win the $5,000 prize! A maximum of 200 tickets will be sold for the Reverse Raffle – so your chances of winning are much greater than with most raffles. A $100 ticket will give you a chance to win the $5000 and provide a great catered dinner. Additional dinner tickets will be available for $35. Please put this critical fundraiser on your calendar and call me for tickets at 313-255-7214. See more details on Page 6.

Finally, for the last 30 years, the Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation (GRDC) has been a valuable supporter of North Rosedale and the wider Grandmont Rosedale neighborhood. GRDC has renovated many homes in North Rosedale, sponsors the Farmers’ Market and provides many resources to support the Vacant Property Task Force and the Safety Committee work that improves our neighborhood. GRDC is having a fundraising Community Connections Breakfast at 7:30 AM on Thursday October 4th at the Community House. Community residents pay a reduced price of $30 if they access tickets through the link in the NRPCA e-blast or call 313-387-4732 x104 and tell them you are a resident.Hope to see you around the Park!

The Legacy Project, NRPCA’s six-year effort to upgrade the North Rosedale Park Community House, moved another step forward with the receipt of a $150,000 grant from the State of Michigan to convert the present warming kitchen into a commercial kitchen. We are grateful to Senator David Knezek and State Representative Sherry Gay-Dagnogo for their efforts in making this grant possible. Board, committee and neighborhood representatives hosted Knezek and Government Committee Chair Jim Stamas on June 1 at the Community House, making a strong case for the public benefits of the project. The new kitchen will be available not only for community events and rentals but also to food entrepreneurs who are seeking affordable and convenient access to kitchen facilities for their emerging catering and food businesses.
