ANNOUNCEMENTS (CONTINUED)

Rotary Foundation News

When the board held its retreat in April of

this year, President Rich Ryan shared

that his goal for the 2014-15 Rotary year

for Foundation giving was to achieve

recognition as a 100% Paul Harris

Sustaining Member Club, 100% EREY

Club (Every Rotarian/Every Year) and

100% Benefactor Club.

Sustaining Member Club:

Foundation Chair Maureen McBride

announced that we’re off to a good start.

She again recognized those members who

became Paul Harris Sustaining Members

at the first meeting of the new Rotary year.

They were: PP Joe Kaiser, PP Patrick

Magnani, PP Dominic Mecklenburg,

President Rich Ryan and PP Roland

Wright.

Since then, several additional members

have become Paul Harris Sustaining

Members. They are: John Hallsten,

Richard Hansen, PP Maureen

McBride, Sam Morgan, PP Erik

Nooren and PP David Stone.

This year Mo is recognizing all Paul Harris

Sustaining Fellows with a sticker to be

adhered to their Rotary badges.

She then thanked those who have become

Paul Harris Sustaining Fellows and

encouraged those who have not, as of yet,

to consider doing so soon rather than later

in order to ensure that we get recognition

at the District Conference next April.

End Polio Now Campaign:

While at the podium, Mo took the

opportunity to thank PE Gene Long,

PP Bob Meyer and PP Roland

Wright for their

contributions to the End Polio

Now Campaign. Each of

them received a special End

Polio Now pin.

Benefactors Club:

Wrapping up the recognitions, Mo explained

that a Benefactor is someone who includes

the Endowment Fund as a beneficiary in

their estate plans or someone who donates

$1,000 or more to the Fund outright. Mo

said she was delighted to recognize our

newest benefactors. As she called their

names, she invited them to the podium to

receive their recognitions – a personalized

certificate in a leather presentation folder

and “wings” to be worn with the standard

Rotary pin or their Paul Harris Fellow pins.

The newest benefactors are: President Rich

Ryan, PE Gene Long and Jeff Donlevy.

Mo then asked everyone to join her in

a round of applause for everyone supporting

The Rotary Foundation.

End Polio Now Campaign Banks: A

Big thanks to those who donated their

pocket change to our banks. Today’s net

proceeds were $20.26.

Board Business:

Reported by Club Secretary Marilee Monagan.

At it's September board meeting, the

HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS WEEK’S

PROGRAM

desks, and up to six students share a

textbook. The science teacher writes

textbook pages on the crumbling blackboard

because there are no science textbooks for

students. Uyoba students need an improved

learning environment with adequate

textbooks and weatherproofed, secure, and

repaired classrooms. Replacing wire mesh

windows, doors, and broken desks will also

create more usable space in classrooms and

allow students to attend school more days

during the four month rainy season because

classrooms will be dry and functional.

Carol spent the past six years building

relationships with stakeholders in the Mfuwe

reagion and identified these needs through

her 21 trips to Mfuwe where she spent time

with school staff, parents, community

leaders, and local government organizations

to evaluate the most pressing needs. Carol

was also instrumental in starting the Rotary

Club of Mfuwe whose membership will play a

significant role in this project.

IPP Patrick Magnani introduced Carol Van

Bruggen from the Rotary Club of Point

West who spoke about the grant our club

participated in and the work that she has

done in Zambia.

The Rotary Club of Point West and 5 other

clubs in District 5180 partnered on a Rotary

Foundation Global Grant supporting Uyoba

School in Zambia. Uyoba School in Mfuwe

Village in South Luangwa, Zambia was

started by villagers ten years ago who were

passionate about providing their children in

grades 1-7 a basic education and opportunity

for higher education. They knew it was the

only way to lift their families out of poverty.

The school began under a tree with 100

students. There are now more than 650

students split into double sessions sharing

three crowded, worn, and leaking

classrooms. Most children sit on the floor

because there are not enough functioning

THE HIGHLANDER Page 7 10/20/2014

The Rotary Club of Point West submitted a

Rotary Foundation Global Grant application

to District 5180 for this project. Working

together with school administration, local

parents and businesses, and the Rotary Club

of Mfuwe, this project will reroof and repair

existing classrooms and furnish them with

repaired and/or new desks and textbooks for

each student. These improvements will

provide a more effective learning

environment for teachers and students.

Repairs will increase property security, keep

dirt, rain, and insects out, and protect

furnishings. Learning effectiveness will

increase because students will have proper

desks and will not be distracted by arranging

old and broken desks on uneven and pitted

concrete or by sitting on the floor.

More than 650 students will have a much

better chance of qualifying for secondary

school and moving on to higher education as

Uyoba School builds on the success they have

achieved to date through this project. These

improvements will help lift local villagers

and their families out of poverty. The seven

combined clubs of District 5180 donated

$10,700 to this project which with Rotary

Foundation funds will total about $40,000.

President Rich and Carol Van Bruggen

As is the usual custom, President Rich

presented Carol with a Rotary gift in

gratitude for her informative presentation.

Then, President Rich asked us to raise our

glasses and join him in a toast to Rotary

adjourned.
