The President’s Message The sun shone for us two Sundays ago,

and the Pets on Parade Carnival was

enjoyed by all who attended. There

were a lot of very tired Rotarians that night, and

even still on Monday.

At our meeting last Monday,

the new Mayor of the City of

Yarra, Jenny Farrar, spoke

very enthusiastically about

future plans. It was interesting to note that she

had been a Rotary

Exchange Student when she

was living in Tocumwal,

that she is very keen about

Rotary because of this and

may be interested in joining at a later date.

On Wednesday afternoon, many of us

went to NHP to conduct Mock Job

Interviews for some of the Year 10

students from Melbourne Girls College.

It was an interesting time, well

organized again by Tim Baker, Kate

Runciman and Nia Holdenson, and we

understand that the girls learnt a lot from the

experience. We are very

grateful to Nigel Peck for

providing his auditorium in which to carry out these

interviews and to his

Personal Assistant, Valerie

Claire, for her considerable

help.

Saturday morning is to be

a new experience for me,

as I am going with the

Lists, Kay Wennagel, Dot

Brown and Hawthorn Rotarians to DIK to help

pack a container which is to take

medical goods to Vanuatu. We will be

able to tell you about this on Monday.

Cheers, Janice

Club News ROMAC: Fakapelea Tafeka. Report by

John Benger. Fakapelea has made a

remarkable recovery from open heart surgery. She was given the all clear

to return home and left Melbourne at 5

p.m. on Wednesday 26th.

Her family is just so grateful for both

the medical treatment and the hospitality shown to them. Richmond

was nominated as the host club and

many members visited them. They

asked me to pass on

their

appreciation. They said

it was very important

at a time of stress.

The Nauruan

community has

supported this family

with food and visits, etc., and they have

been amazed to learn of what Rotary

does. In fact one local Nauruan plans

to join Rotary but unfortunately he is

not on our side of town.

Many thanks for everyone's support.

Currently we do not have any patients

and due to work load at Royal Children’s

we may have to wait some time to get a

spot. However Epworth have agreed to

do two operations for no fee and Janice

Peeler is now trying to tie up patient

availability, surgeon availability and

hospital availability.

Killer Biscuits wanted for Attempted Murder (Real headline!) Lisa Burnett, 23, a resident of San Diego, was visiting her in-laws and while

there went to a nearby supermarket to pick up some groceries. Several people

noticed her sitting in her car with the windows rolled up, her eyes closed and

with both hands behind the back of her head. One customer became concerned and walked over to the car. He noticed

Lisa’s eyes were now open, and she looked very strange. He asked her if

she was OK and Lisa replied that she’d been shot in the back of the head and

she had been holding her brains in for over an hour. The man called the

paramedics who broke into the car

because the doors were locked, but Lisa refused to remove her hands from

her head. When they finally got in, they found that Lisa had a wad of

bread dough on the back of her head… A Pillsbury biscuit canister had

exploded in the heat, making a noise that sounded like a gunshot, and the wad of dough hit her on the back of her

head. When she reached back to find out what it was, she felt the dough and

thought it was her brains. She initially passed out, but quickly recovered and

tried to hold her brains in for over an hour until someone noticed her and

came to her aid. Lisa is blonde.

Last Week’s Meeting Speaker: Cr Jenny Farrar, Mayor City of Yarra. Topic: The City of Yarra Today. Report by Brian List.

Back in 1987 Jenny Farrar was an

exchange student sponsored by the Rotary Club of Numurkah, Victoria. She spent a year in California, USA in a rural town called

Big Bear Lake. Later she became a Student Representative for the

National Union of Students at Monash University, Melbourne.

Jenny was elected a Councillor of the City of Yarra in 2002 and since then has held the position of Chair of

Development. This has involved balancing local Planning Schemes with

amenities of our City against the concepts of the State Government.

Last year’s Budget was her first and involved consultation with most parties concerned. She now meets regularly

local business owners and CEO’s – Yarra has more businesses than any

other metropolitan council outside the

CBD. Currently the State Government’s

Action Plan is in discussion with the newly appointed Minister for Planning –

Justin Madden.

Other interesting items she talked about were:

• New affordable housing

for the disadvantaged.

• Water waste problems – have not been tackled for the last 20 years

• Re-opening of the Fitzroy Town Hall – Cost $7.5m

to rehabilitate. The City now has an Asset Management Strategy and a

Director of Asset Management.

• Our City is not getting a fair share of the GST and Land Tax collected by

the State and Federal Governments. The City of Yarra is looking for Grants from them.

Our Mayor was most encouraging to us and the work of Rotary.
