A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Everyone was in a festive mood last evening as we celebrated Rotary Club of Southport’s 74th anniversary. There would have been only a handful of people present who haven’t experienced a 74th birthday so it was no surprise that the occasion was fun with lots of happy recollections of past achievements and fond memories. It was especially pleasing to be joined by PDG Sandra and Sam Doumany and DGE Andy Rajapakse. And it was great to recognise a number of past members, guests and partners. Thank you Ferry Road Tavern for providing a sumptuous buffet banquet. We must start planning soon for next year’s 75th party. It was fitting that Honorary Member, Hugh Smith was present to receive his Paul Harris Fellow pin +4 from DGE Andy. Congratulations, Hugh. In a brief, extraordinary general meeting, members voted unanimously in favour of a motion that: District 9640 NOT merge with Districts 9630 and 9600. Assuming that more than two-thirds of clubs in our District vote in similar vein we should expect our District to remain independent, at least for a few more years. Members supported the idea of hosting another Business Networking Event. This will occur on Tuesday, 1st October. At our next meeting on 3rd September we will welcome Bart Jones and his family to receive the Cronin Engineering Scholarship bursary. I also hope the meeting will be attended by some potential new members attracted to Rotary at our recent Evolve event. Let’s ensure they receive a very warm introduction to Southport Rotary. Peter and Barbara Overell have kindly offered their place for a (BYO everything) lunch from 11:30am on Sunday 15th September. As always, this will be an enjoyable outing for everyone to socialise and share good food and fellowship. Register on CR for this so everyone knows who is going. Happy 74th Birthday Rotary Club Southport Scribe report for meeting on 20 August, 2019 Chair Michael Irving (Michael) opened the meeting at 18:15, he thanked all for attending this special event. In particular Michael welcomed PHF Andy Rajapakse DGE (Andy DGE), Sam & Sandra Domany, Hugh & Nancy Smith, David Childs, Lea Rickwood, Michelle (our guest), Steve & Allyson Penfold, & Mervyn Powell. Michael also reported that Greg Dux is back home and doing well and Neil Russell is well settled in his new home. Michael invited Sandra Domany to propose a toast to Rotary International. Sandra spoke of the milestones in Rotary’s history, the Paul Harris Foundation, The success of the Polio+ efforts (only Pakistan & Afghanistan still have problems); Our club’s achievements being the oldest club on the Gold Coast and how many other clubs we sponsored by us, who in turn sponsored more clubs. Andy DGE Thanked Sandra for her toast, & talked about our club being the “father” of the Gold Coast clubs. Andy DGE also mentioned the Lismore club being the oldest in Australia (Est. 1931) and now facing loss of membership due to ageing and called on all of us to bring in younger people to keep the clubs going and continuing the good cause of Rotary. Michael called for members’ reports, there were none; then called on Tony Pritchard to open the extraordinary meeting. Tony has asked for a members’ vote whether district 9640 should amalgamate with two other Rotary districts. A vote was taken not to amalgamate with these districts and was passed unanimously. . With this The Extraordinary meeting concluded and the festivity continued. Tony also asked the members opinion whether to run more networking events, the majority of members voted in favour . Sergeant – Duncan Plastow collected “fines” based on how long we were members, Under 10 years, under 20 years etc., it stopped at under 50 years. Great feeling Lea won the Heads & Tails Steve won the raffle with Ticket D42 Michael gave a run down on the club history, it was founded in 1945 when the Gold Coast had only 60,000 residents, now the population here is over 600,000 and there are so many Rotary clubs. The Gold Coast is unique, so unlike the rest of Australia. Michael started by naming some of the great projects Rotarians achieved such as the canals (Cronin Project), schools, universities, Bridging the Gap, looking after the less fortunate etc., Michael then called on each of us to say what we particularly liked about Rotary.. the comments were many and rather touching,
Meals on wheels and the chain of pennies; Friendship accompanied by wine and food; The strong wish to help others; The fellowship & creating Christmas decorations; Reliable good friends; Hosting exchange students; Making international friends; A la Carté in the Parke fun fund raiser; Youth exchange; Long table dinner (for 44); Lex Bell and the Black & White Minstrels; Sharing ones home with Rotarian friends; Great charity work; Wonderful contacts for new comers to Australia; Group outings; Soup & Slippers;

District Conference and the great fun there; Charleville project; Golf day raising $40K better than sausage sizzle in Ashmore; Feeling so welcome when joining, never feeling like an outsider; Joan Cronin – such a wonderful mentor for the Rotariens; Rotary fellowship and storytelling; Cyril Richarde – true friendship over decades; Garage sale to raise funds for Rotary projects; Caravanning to conferences and after; Working the carousel and talking to people about Rotary; Sharing values with people from other countries/cultures; Ice creams stall at the Gold Coast Show day by Rotary project; Young people who benefited from Rotary who want to reciprocate; and Rotary Southport is a great and lasting group since decades; the most active
in Australia benefiting young people all over the world, our informality is so
encouraging and inviting, great gratitude to all spouses and partners for their
on-going support.
Tony & Andy DGE conferred the Paul Harris Foundation award to Hugh Smith and thanked him for his contribution. Michael advised that our next meeting is on 3 September 2019 and read out the roster for that meeting. 18 October is World Polio Day – think of a project to raise funds; This Friday Southport Chamber of Commerce and Rotary clubs have a joint networking Breakfast at the Southport Yacht club. This event concluded at 21:00hrs Elisabeth S

Birthdays
What goes up and never comes down? Your Age
Does a pink candle burn longer than a blue one? A: No, they both burn shorter!
Q: "Were any famous men born on your birthday?" A: "No, only little babies."
Q: Why did the man feel warm on his birthday? A: Because people kept toasting him!
I like birthdays, but I think too many can kill you.

I was born to be a pessimist. My blood type is B Negative
You know you are getting old when people call at 9 p.m. and ask, "Did I wake you?"
You know you are getting old when you have a party and the neighbors don't even
realize it.
You know you are getting old when you no longer think of speed limits as a
challenge.
You know you are getting old when you quit trying to hold your stomach in, no
matter who walks into the room.
You know you are getting old when you actually want socks for Christmas.
Forget about the past, you can’t change it. Forget about the future, you can’t predict
it. Forget about the present, I didn’t get you one.
