PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The scholarship evening went off very well and both parents have told me how much they appreciated our efforts. I think everyone would agree, just from the two recipients responses, that not only did the selectors make the right choice but these are two people destined to make a difference in the world. Hopefully they will join Rotary one day. My research into the Hobart’s didn’t reveal this but I’d like to mention that Jenny was also honoured by being appointed Dame Hospitaller of the Sovereign Order of St John of Jerusalem a couple of years ago. Certainly Jenny and Peter are worthy recipients. On the weekend the second District assembly was held at Mullumbimby and it was pleasant to meet up with Rotarians from other Clubs. I’ll leave it up to Lambert to introduce you to the new theme etc. The Polio campaign is frustratingly close to completion which makes it all the more necessary to carry on. Fortunately Pakistan has decided that if India can achieve something they won’t be outdone so their government is committed and the Taliban in Afghanistan has decided that polio eradication would be a good thing as well so they’re on board now. Which leaves Nigeria of course but with the Taliban’s change of mind perhaps the fundamentalists in that country will also change? We live in hope. See you next week. Andrew TREASURER’S REPORT Merv Powell NOTE: All members who fail to send in an apology for non-attendance will be charged as per our club policy, which was agreed by all members at previous club assemblies. Presentation of Peter and Jenny Hobart Medical Scholarships in Clinical Studies.

Before the presentation of the Scholarships, President Andrew read a brief biography of Peter and Jenny

commencing from their marriage in Sydney in 1965. Since arriving on the Gold Coast in 1975 this remarkable

couple have achieved considerable success in both their professional and community service achievements.

Jenny’s return to her original career of nursing in 1992 led to her subsequent employment with Queensland

Health at the Gold Coast Hospital which in turn led to her and Peter’s involvement in the development of the

Griffith University School of Medicine. Their enthusiasm for this project, together with other considerable

President Andrew advised that because of the high standard of entries, two Scholarships had been awarded

Courtney with friends and family Dione and boyfriend

Thanks for Tuesday award. Hi Andrew Thanks for the photo, it’s great. It’s a fantastic and very generous thing you have all offered Dione and Court. Having just met Dione and listening to some of her plans and knowing Courtney and her thoughts for her career path, I hope you are aware of how much this opportunity means to her. To have given Courtney the means to get herself overseas to work internationally for her placement as an almost brand new graduate next year is an incredible stepping stone and something I am not in the position to do. She has always worked very hard to support herself living away from home while she studies and this award will make life a lot easier for her in that regard. I know she will keep in contact with you all and up to date on her progress. As it turns out, Dione’s family lived in Lae in New Guinea at the same time as my family and I did and we have mutual friends! I think Dione’s Dad actually knows mine! The world keeps getting smaller. Thank you again from our family for your hospitality last night and your clubs encouragement and support of Courtney. Kind regards Tracey

.Thoughts for the week

Why was the inkblot unhappy?

Because his mother was in the pen and they did not know how long the sentence would be.

I never wanted to believe that my dad was stealing from his job as a road worker. But when I got home all the signs were there.

Why does a chicken coop always have two doors?

Because if it had 4 doors it would be a chicken sedan.

A teacher was finishing up a lesson on the joys of discovery and the importance of curiosity. “Where would we be today,” she asked, “if no one had ever been curious?” A child quietly spoke from the back of the room,”Still in the Garden of Eden.”

“ What would you do dear if I should die?”

“I’d go nearly crazy.”

“Would you marry again?”

“I said NEARLY crazy.”

“Will the father be present at the birth?”, the obstetrician asked solicitously.

“Nah,” said the mother-to-be, “He and my husband don’t get along.”

Three Wise Women

Would have asked directions

Arrived on time

Help deliver the baby

Brought practical gifts

Cleaned the stable

Made a casserole

And there would be peace on earth!!!
