The Rough Rider 2 November 2020

Plan to be at these activities for a great time. They are wonderful opportunities to meet new people or spend time with old friends. Don’t have a ride? I’m sure someone has a seat. Remember to take your camera!

NOTE: PLEASE CHECK THE CLUB CALENDAR FOR UPDATES!

November 2020

THANKSGIVING IN QUARTZSITE • November 25—30. Meet on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 9:00 AM, at the Marana Road exit (Exit 236) off I-10.

Take the off ramp and cross Marana Road; there is a large area on the left. If anybody is wanting to come later, let me know and I can give you directions to our campsite.

• Run Leader: Rheal Tetreault (520-682-0273). For food coordination, Becky Antle (520-405-7389). • Trail Ratings: Various.

• Destination: Camping will be south of Quartzsite, near the Kofa Wildlife Refuge. We will be doing Quartzsite for Thanksgiving again this year. We will dry camp south of Quartzsite near the Kofa Wildlife Refuge. Runs are planned for Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We plan on coming back on Monday to avoid some of the traffic. In the past we have done runs into the Kofa and to old mining sites in the Quartzsite area. Some may think the Quartzsite area is crazy with motorhomes and snowbirds in the winter. While this is true, the snowbirds do not really arrive in bulk until after the holidays. Quartzsite itself can be pretty busy with all the holiday travel. People want to gas up in Quartzsite before crossing into California where the gas prices increase dramatically. Out on the trail we don't encounter many people. Thanksgiving dinner will be a potluck. Contact Becky to coordinate the menu.

SAN RAFAEL STATE NATURE AREA (SCENIC LOOP) • November 28, 9:00 AM. Meet on the southeast corner of I-10 and AZ 83 (exit 281). Alternate meeting lo-

cation: Park Restroom in Patagonia (N31.53888, W110.75579), AZ 82 and 4th Ave. • Run Leader: Jeff Merrell (520-907-0243 or [email protected]—leave a message, text, email and I’ll get

back to you ASAP). • Trail Rating: 1.5—2.0. very scenic and historic. (Required: Stock 4WD with low range. Full-size spare.)

• Trip Distance: 45-mile loop starting in Patagonia. The trail starts and ends in Patagonia; we will do a loop of the San Rafael State Nature Area (grasslands)

south of Patagonia. We will go south to the border town of Lochiel (about 500 feet north of the border; no crossing here), then past the grasslands historical ranch house and stop for lunch at the Fray Marcos De Niza historical landmark (first European, and a missionary and Franciscan friar west of the Rocky Mountains). After lunch we will continue past the mining ghost towns of Duquesne and Washington Camp. (Sorry, these are both on private land now and do not allow visitors.) We will stop at the cemetery for the ghost town of Harshaw. The town itself is directly across the road but is fenced off, with a caretaker who watches. Bring a lunch and plenty to drink. Any questions, comments or concerns? Give me a call, text, or email. Leave a message and I’ll get back to you ASAP.

December 2020

CHIMNEY ROCK LOOP TRAIL • December 12, 9:00 AM. Meet at the McDonald’s parking lot on the northeast corner of Tanque Verde and

Catalina Highway. • Run Leader: Jeff Merrell (520-907-0243 (leave a message or text, I’ll get back to you) or email -

[email protected]). • Trail Rating: 3.0. Vehicle Requirements: 4-wheel drive-with low range capability; stock vehicles ok (no

street tires allowed); full size spare; AZ State Land Permit. • Destination: Redington Pass area. • Trail Distance: 10.0 miles. Note: Bring PPE (Face Mask) just in case there is a breakdown that forces us to get closer than Social Distanc-ing requirement. We will enter the trail off Redington Road @ MP: 17.3. About halfway through the loop we will take a lunch break. After lunch we will finish the loop, coming back out on Redington Road at MP: 10.2 and back to Tuc-son. If you have never been on this trail, it is a great combination of scenic and technical. It has a little of every-thing – in my opinion: it’s the perfect 3.0 trail! Steep hills (up and down), loose rock, off-camber, washes. If you are a wheeling old dog, it’s an enjoyable run; if you’re fairly new to wheeling, it’s a great trail to test your skill or learn some new ones without going overboard. (If Arizona pinstriping is a concern this is not the trail for you.) If you can do this trail, you can do any 3.0 or lower rated trail in the region!!!

Have an idea for a run or event? Do you have an idea but don’t want to lead a trip, or you don’t know the route? Don’t worry! Just contact a

Board member with your ideas.

Please remember these trips usually are day trips, which means to bring plenty of water.

Tucson Classic Bronco Cruise (11/08 Paul Siskind) Photos by Paul Siskind.

The Tucson Classic Bronco Club held a cruise-in Sunday, Nov 8, to show off some nice vintage iron and compare notes. We gathered at the McHale Center parking lot at 3 PM for a meet-and-greet and to get some nice pictures on a warm, partly cloudy day. From there we took our 7 trucks on a trip around cam-pus and down 4th Avenue, receiving thumbs up and waves from lots of Jeep folks and pedestrians alike. After a trip down Speedway and a quick stop atop Gates Pass, we mo-tored down to Golden Gate Road just off Sandario for a sun-

set lineup and more pics and talking. A good time was had by all and we met some nice people as well!

Article and charts by Miles Weigold ([email protected]). The Participation Points Report below is current through 11/29 except for: 10/31 – Mansfield Canyon, 11/24 Meeting, 11/25-30 Quartzsite Meeting & runs. If you have copies of these rosters, please forward ASAP. I’ll update the report and forward to all members via Groups.io. All current members who have earned at least 1 point YTD are listed. As always, if you believe I’ve missed something (always possible) please email me at [email protected]. I’ve compared totals to this time last year…. clearly, total numbers are down. However, on 12/1/19 the points leader (Steve Archer) had earned 61 points compared to Jeff’s 66 this year. Leo is in 10th place with 17 points, last year, tied in 29th place with 18 points were Chris Richardson and Gary Fabiano.

Personal note: Pat and I drove to Wilton, CT, to spend Thanksgiving with our son and his family. He declared the 4-day visit to be “technology free.” We hiked in the woods, cooked and ate together, bought a Christmas tree and started the decorations, enjoyed the after-dinner firepit sharing stories, and put a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle together……together! When we returned to DE and looked at emails, mail, posts, etc. we found that we had missed almost nothing but agreed that we had gained A LOT. Give it a try…..the rewards are memora-ble. We expect to return to AZ the 1st week in January after a Christmas visit with family in both CT and MA. Hap-py Holidays to all! Stay healthy, wear a mask, and stay socially distanced please!

Gift Idea

I am saddened to report that Sandra Rush passed away on November 21. She and her husband, Ernie (who passed away several years ago) were long-time club members, as was their son, Ed. I regret I was unable to find any obituary for Sandra online. If you have any memories of Sandra and/or Er-nie that you’d like to share, please send them to me and I’ll include them in a future Rough Rider issue. Dave

In Memoriam

Brian and Pearl Caulkins ([email protected]) sent this photo to me. Their daughter made the quilt for them, and they thought other club members might like something similar. They say each one would be different. If you’re interested, please contact the Caulkins. They didn’t say how quickly the quilts could be made or how much they’d cost.

The Rough Rider 17 November 2020

As Malcolm mentioned in an email this past Tuesday, 2021 dues are due on January 1. They remain un-changed at $50 per family membership. You can pay them at the December meeting, or you can mail them to him at

Tucson Roughriders, Inc. c/o Malcolm Leslie

4691 N Homestead Ave Tucson, AZ 85749

Chris sent out an email that the November Run of the Month was Muleshoe / Jackson Cabin.

In his Monday email about the Tuesday meeting, Andy included this: “…[W]e are looking to fill two of the ap-pointed positions, Membership and Social Media. If interested contact me or any board member.” We have a large club (the November roster includes 83 memberships!) and we need a couple folks to step up. Tom Par-ker, our current membership guru, will be happy to help his successor. We have no current Social Media chair, so you’d be starting with a blank slate. Think about it over the next couple of weeks, and give the club a Christmas present at the December meeting by volunteering for one or the other position. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I haven’t had the opportunity to do much on the ‘Monster this month, but it hasn’t quite been totally quiet, either. PV Auto received my new engine and moved all the parts (intake manifold, distributor, etc.) from the old to the new before letting me know it was ready. I got it back to the JeepHouse and then bought a new clutch assembly for it, but haven’t put them all together yet. I also need things like a water pump, a new har-monic balancer (the new engine is internally balanced, whereas the old one was balanced externally), and a bunch of other stuff. Once the holidays are over and the parts get ordered and they all arrive, I expect to have several fun-filled days getting things gathered and installed. Who knows, maybe 2021 will be THE YEAR!
