The Round Editor: Swan Cottage, Lamas - 01603 279917 email: [email protected] Change is coming…. I decided to have a look back at my previous March articles written for The Round to make sure I didn’t repeat myself as I seem to be at that age where I can’t even remember what I had to eat last week let alone remember something I wrote last year! It turns out that I talked about Brexit and the uncertainties as it was still very much in the headlines. Well of course we have had a lot of change in our politics since then with Boris Johnson elected as our Prime Minister and the UK having left Europe but we still find ourselves in uncertain times about how this is all going to work – so the pressure is now on to get it sorted. Interestingly it seems to have rather fallen out of the press coverage. One thing that is unlikely to get much press attention is what I have mentioned in all my previous March babblings which is the Christian season of Lent, as this starts in March and often covers the whole of it as it does this year. The only thing you are likely to hear on TV or see in the press are comments about what people have given up for Lent although this has been slightly overtaken with events such as Dry January (no alcohol), Veganuary (there is also Meat Free Monday) and no doubt other ones on the horizon trying to get us to give something up. It seems to be such a fad these days to give something up, yet in reality it is only for a short time and the idea of them is more about making changes in our lives which improve our health, help the environment and help those around us. More and more the Christian message of Lent is actually one of making changes to our lives rather than to give something up and ‘suffer’ for a month in avoiding temptation to focus the mind only to return to that temptation once Lent is over. These events of giving up are about change. Dry January is meant to show you that you can do without alcohol or at least reduce your intake; unlike a friend of mine who stays dry for January then celebrates his achievement by drinking several pints and a couple of glasses of wine at the first opportunity in February. Change is never easy, but we need to start embracing and accepting it. Things cannot and will not stay the same for us as individuals, as a country and most importantly as a world as we face the disasters of conflict, disease and climate change. We need to stop living in the past and look to the future. George Bernard Shaw once said that “progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything”. We need to all change our minds to be more positive, more loving, more caring and more aware of the needs of others around us and the needs of the world; otherwise the changes likely to happen are not going to be the good sort, they are going to be the sort that challenge our very existence. What a wonderful send-off we had for our dear brother, Donald MacKenzie! It was referred to in our eulogy as a ‘Donfest’ and, spread over the two days as it was, it certainly seemed like a festival.

The Vigil service in Lammas Church on the Friday night, with the coffin in candlelight, was attended by an almost full church. Some people who could not be there had used the time before the service to come and pay their respects with suitable recorded and live music by the family, setting the scene.

At the funeral service on the Saturday morning at Lammas, the family and close friends just filled the church perfectly and this was followed by the simple cremation service at Earlham, where some of Donald’s ashes will be buried close to our parents. The remainder of the ashes will be spread or buried locally, possibly at Lammas Church, in September when all the family can get together again.

The Thanksgiving Service at Buxton in the afternoon was a wonderful occasion. There were in excess of 230 people in the church, with some having to stand throughout, and the feeling of love, warmth, friendship and respect came across so strongly. We were struck by there being so many ex-pupils from Buxton School at the service and, when added to 60 family members and friends from many walks of his life - including school friends from way back at Hamond’s Grammar School, Swaffham - it was not surprising to see the church so full.

We breathed a sigh of relief that everyone had managed to fit into the two churches at all the services, but we were more anxious about the space in the Village Hall for the refreshment time. Although it was a real squeeze and more than a bit cosy, we just

about got away with it! Thanks to ‘The Shinanikins’ for playing Donald’s music, albeit quite understandably over people wanting to talk! They are planning a Folk Dance in honour of Donald on September 26, close to their 45th anniversary, so keep an eye open for that.

We really appreciated such strong support for Donald on the two days and wish to thank all those who attended, whether it was just one, or all of the services. It could not have happened as it did without the hard work and devotion of so many of you local people. The Rev David Hagan-Palmer was so supportive of what was a completely different to normal funeral and we are most grateful to him for that. So many other local people were involved in organising the various aspects of the weekend, too numerous to name. You know who you are and we will be eternally grateful for what you did for us - although we know you were really doing it for Donald. Even Bure Valley Business Centre and Buxton School were delighted to help us out with parking space - nothing was too much trouble for anyone and we felt so wonderfully supported. There is an outstanding community spirit in your villages and this was so evident to us as we were making plans for the ‘Donfest.’

The funeral directors were so thoughtful and helpful throughout - again not their typical funeral - and, as we write they have informed us that the donations to Amnesty International and The Norfolk Wildlife Trust that have come through them, stand in excess of £1,000.

So now we have said goodbye to our dear brother and friend to so many people. There will be a big gap in our lives and in the lives of many of you reading this. We will all miss his great sense of humour and we are sure he would have appreciated a photograph he took which was displayed in the Village Hall. Some of you may have seen it - the last photo on the display board of his old rusty wheelbarrow, which he entitled ‘Rust in Peace.’ Life had become more than a bit of a struggle for him in recent times and we take comfort in the fact that he really can now ‘Rest in Peace.’

We are holding a Lent brunch on Saturday 28 March from 10am to 12.30pm ~ see back page

Jo Smithson, our Treasurer, spent February in Cambodia working with the Finance Manager of First Step Cambodia to help him develop and review their finance policies and procedures. A small charity like this would not have access to such a high level of expertise without volunteers like Jo.

First Step Cambodia is a non-governmental organisation with the primary goal of ensuring that all Cambodian children are protected from sexual abuse and that all those affected by abuse are supported and enabled to reach their potential. They achieve this goal by addressing the issues of child sexual abuse on the individual, family, community and societal levels simultaneously.

The charity is relatively small financially and has 24 staff over two sites in Phnom Penh and in Siem Reap. As well as the modest central support team the staff are mostly social workers and trainers. Training takes place for other NGOs and professional staff working in health and care, focused on child protection issues and sexual abuse. The Executive Director has built a solid reputation as a professional expert in these issues.

If you are unable to attend but would like to make a donation, please contact the Churchwardens, Georgie Graver on 279682 or John Rose on 279576.

News Over 30 members were entertained at the February meeting by Denise Treissman and her talk and film on the Dalai Lama’s Palace and the Buddhist monk’s graduation ceremony she attended in India. After 18 years of training the graduation ceremony took place over three days in a monastery of 3,000 monks. The feeding of 3,000 monks plus their visitors done on the run caused much amusement and there was interest in Denise’s monthly meditation sessions in Aylsham. We welcomed a new member and a guest, both newcomers to Buxton. Then followed a short update on all the activities available to members, both at County level which included a Driving Day, Rag Rug Making Day, etc, invitations to other WI meetings and also our own lunch and book clubs, bowling and walking groups in the village. This was followed by tea and social time as usual. Some members are busy knitting trauma teddies which will be taken to the Annual Meeting in April for distribution to children abroad who are suffering loss of family or homes in dire circumstances. The craft group is also busy putting together their entry for the Centenary Salver Competition in April which this year involves using recycled materials. There were 20 entries for the fun competition for something red; it was won by Tricia Bell with an unusual travelling clock; second was Liza Hamilton with an elephant, and there were several Valentine’s Day items. As usual this was decided by popular vote. At the meeting on Thursday 12th March at 7.30 pm at Buxton Village Hall Roy Spinks will be showing slides of “Old Buxton and the local area”. If you are interested in this talk please come as a visitor for free - you are always welcome. For further information contact Vereen Marcer (01603 279457) or email [email protected].

The 17th of February meeting promised to be very interesting - an illustrated talk by Graeme Taplin entitled "drone photography".

March 2nd sees our first in house competition, "abandoned buildings".

The 16th of March is a member's critique evening. We can all bring along images on a memory stick, have them projected on the screen and await comments - not serious though.

On March 31st we have a competition against Lowestoft and Wymondham at Wymondham. Usually eight prints and eight digital images per team all awarded marks by a judge.

My picture of the month is a snowdrop. Spring can't be too far away can it?

Photo: Mike Moore

We are a small friendly club and we welcome anyone, beginner or experienced with an interest in photography. There is no pressure to enter any of the competitions.

Our annual subscriptions are very modest - £30 per person or £35 for a couple and £15 if you are in full-time education. That's about £1.36 per meeting, £0.68 per meeting if you are a student, and includes a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit - bargain!

If you would like to come along to a few meetings please feel free without any obligation, refreshments included. We normally meet on the first and third Monday of the month.

For further details visit our website - www. buxtonphotographicclub.co.uk

or phone Mike on 01603 279635

The Round will have a few spaces available for advertising from the April issue. The cost is very reasonable (£7 per issue) and it goes to around 900 households in Buxton, Lamas, Brampton, Little Hautbois and Badersfield – a bargain!

Please contact the Editor – details on front page.
