'l'RINITY COLLEGE, THE COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS, AND

PROVINCIAL MEDICAL SCHOOLS.

IN concluding this History I have thought it desirable to givea brief account of the Medical Schools connected with TrinityCollege and the College of Physicians, the Queen's Colleges and

Provincial Institutions, in order that the reader maybecome acquainted with the complete educational resources

of the Irish School of Medicine. To give biographicalsketches of the teachers connected with those schools would

unduly extend the limits of this work; many of them, however, having been Presidents or Professors of the College of Surgeonsor teachers in the private schools, have been mentioned in

connection with those institutions.

THE SCHOOL OF PHYSIC.

An account of the origin of the School of Physic will be

found at pages 108 to no inclusive. As at present consti

tuted, it consists of the amalgamated medical schools of TrinityCollege and the College of Physicians, with the addition of

several new Professorships. The College of Physicians elect

the Professors of the Practice of' Medicine, the Institutes of'

Medicine, Midwifery, and Materia Medica, the remainingProfessors are elected by the Board of Trinity College, who

claim to be the sole managers of the School. In the first edition of this History a list of the Professors in

Trinity College" Medical School was given. It was taken from

the College Calendar, but it was pointed out that a revision of

the interesting record was desirable, as the name of Professor

Leahy was omitted from it. This revision has' been

admirably carried out by Dr. T. Percy C. Kirkpatrick."* History of the Medical Teaching in Trinity College, Dublin, and of

the School of Physic in Ireland, by T. Percy, C. Kirkpatrick, M.D.,M.R.I.A., Fellow and Registrar of the R.C,P.I. Dublin. Hanna and

Lecturer in Pathology.-Alexander Charles O'Sullivan, 1895.In 1906 an agreement was suggested between Trinity

College and the College of Physicians to dissolve their con

nection as regards the School of Physic. The Professors

elected by the College of Physicians to be in future appointed byTrinity College. The £400 per annum. at the disposal of the

former College, payable to the King's Professors, to be divided

equally between the Colleges. The revenue derived from Sir

Patrick Dun's estate (about £1,000 per annum) to be divided

equally between the College of Physicians and Sir PatrickDun's Hospital, Up to the present this agreement has not

been realised, to accomplish which the repeal of the School of

Physic Act is necessary..

The School buildings have been for several years paststeadily improved and enlarged, and at present they can com

pare favourably with any similar structures in any part of

Europe. In 1800 there were only 22 students in the School of Physic,

and in the first decade of the Nineteenth Century the averagenumber was 56. In the next decade the number rose to 114.

In the next ten years the average annual number was 213.

From 1834 there was a great decrease in the number of Medical

846 MEDICAL SCHOOLS OF THE QUEEN'S COLLEGES

students for many years. In 1838 the number. was only 81.

After 1864 the number steadily increased, and has never gonebelow 240.

The interests of the Colleges of Physicians and Surgeonsare practically identical. Their incomes are chiefly derived

from the fees of students examined conjointly by the two

bodies. United for examinational purposes, why not com

bine for educational purposes and convert the College Schools

into a Medico-Surgical School under joint management of the

Colleges

THE MEDICAL SCHOOLS OF THE QUEEN'S COLLEGES.

In 1849 there were established medical schools in the recentlyconstituted Queen's Colleges in Belfast, Cork, and Galway.Parliament provided grants for their maintenance and for the

salaries of their Professors. They were all connected with the

Queen's University, and every candidate for a medical degreein the latter was obliged to study during at least one annus

medicus in one of the Queen's Colleges. On the replacementof the Queen's, by the Royal University, this condition

ceased to exist, and probably the medical schools of these

Colleges have thereby suffered serious injury. The newlyestablished National University requires instruction to be

taken out in one of the Colleges. attached to it which now

include the Cork and Galway Colleges.
