Free Foresters 160th Anniversary Match
Athletics in
Sutton Coldfield Cricket Club
Club Historian Peter Bell on tradition of
athleticism within the membership of
Sutton Coldfield Cricket Club.
It was a somewhat overcast Sunday on 17th September 2016 when the Free Foresters returned to their inaugural ground to compete in a 160th anniversary match against a team of SuAon Coldfield Cricket Club (SCCC) players selected by match manager Andy Biddle.
Although sIll slightly overcast the weather remained good, and there was a good, friendly atmosphere created by plenIful support. SCCC went into bat first and, aKer a quality game of cricket, they won the match with a very notable century, scored by Lee Thomason. This being the highlight of the match.
The Free Foresters also played against our club in 1997, the 150th anniversary of the founding SuAon Coldfield Cricket Club

On 20th July 1856 the Rev William Bedford founded the Free Foresters Cricket Club in the grounds of his rectory in SuAon Coldfield. The team is so named because ’Foresters’ refers to the Forests of Arden in Warwickshire and Needwood in Staffordshire, and ‘Free’ because members would be free to play against the club without permission, rather than being ‘Ied’ to Free Foresters alone – hence their moAo being ‘United through Un-ed’.

Athletics in Sutton Coldfield Cricket Club
SuAon Coldfield Cricket Club has had a tradiIon of athleIcism within its membership and as early as Whit Monday in 1863 the Rector agreed with the Town Council to
promote a sports event during a game of cricket in Rectory Park. The event was adverIsed as ‘Club Feast’ in Rectory Park, with prize money for the winner of the games, which were intermingled with ‘General Amusements,
Country Dancing, Foot Ball, Cricket, Quoits and other AthleIc Sports’.
Prize money was adverIsed as 2 shillings and 6 pence (25p) for the Hurdle Race winner for Men and also for the second Hurdle Race for Men, but excluding the winner of the first race. There was also a 2 shilling and 6 pence prize for the winner of the Flat Race for Men. Also in the programme were two Flat Races for Boys with a prize of 2 shillings and a similar prize for a Sack Race. ‘Games to commence at three O’clock P.M. and All Disputes to be Referred to the CommiAee’. There was no indicaIon if ladies could take part in the sack race. This event ran for a number of years but no records of winners were recorded and there was no accurate measured distance between the start and finish lines. By 1871 there was a gravel track in SuAon Park alongside Coles Meadow, later to be known as Crystal Palace, close to where the CliKon Road Youth Centre and the ASTRO surface is now situated. This was the first and only athleIc sports event to take place amongst the Club’s members. All the races, except the hurdle race were run on a gravel track, with the hurdles run on the grass.
It was recorded that there were some notable athletes amongst the members. The Rev W.H. Colmore won the hundred yards and Godfrey Robinson won the 440 yards, referred to as the ‘quarter mile’, whilst the Rev W.C.R. Bedford finished second in both races but won the hurdles with Godfrey Robinson finishing in second place.
Two years later, representaIves of these families all gained ‘Blues’. W.C.R. Bedford and T.M. Colmore ran the hundred for Cambridge and Oxford, respecIvely, whilst G.M. Robinson rowed in the Cambridge boat. John Ellison, for many years the ‘Starter’ at the Bishop Vesey's school sports, was also a parIcipant in the events at Coles Meadow. We also had an outstanding athleIc in Eric Bertram Crockford (right) known as Tom, who played cricket for SuAon Coldfield Cricket Club and Warwickshire County Cricket Club. He won a gold medal in the 1920 Olympic games in Antwerp playing hockey for Great Britain and Ireland, as well as represenIng England on 17 occasions. His indoor acIvates included billiards where he was an excepIonal good player holding a number of records for the highest break. In the summer of 1936, the Olympic Games were held in Berlin and we can boast of success by another Club member Arthur Godfrey Kilner Brown who lived at 146 Rectory Road and won a gold medal in the 4 x 400metre team relay and a silver medal in the 400 metre individual race. Godfrey’s sister Audrey also won a silver medal at the 1936 Olympic Games, known as the ‘Hitler Games’ and it is worthy of noIng that Godfrey’s brother Ralph, who also played cricket for the Club, later to be knighted as Sir R.K. Brown won the 1934 AAA 440 yards hurdles Itle and finished third in the Empire Games later that season.
Today’s cricketers are extremely athleIc, as no ball is safe unIl it hits the boundary line because fielders will dive or slide tackle the ball to prevent it crossing the line. Players of the past never or rarely got grass stains on their flannels because they had to be dry-‐cleaned, whereas cricket whites of today can be washed and back in use within hours.

Chairman’s End of Season ReportI cannot report in such a celebratory manner as in the past three seasons, which seems unfamiliar and difficult to come to terms with. However, there is much to learn from our experience and we must respond posiIvely in order to re-‐establish the standards to which we have become accustomed.
It is clear that communicaIons between management, players at all levels and coaches has to improve and if this happens, will go a long way towards improving maAers Also, returning to strategies that proved successful when pracIcing and training. No one could have anIcipated the number of injuries to squad members and this put great strain on availability and other selecIon issues.
La Manga was a new venture and the Club came away aKer winning the compeIIon with plenty of good pracIce in pleasant surroundings. The opImism generated did not, unfortunately, conInue for the rest of the season and soon dissipated as results began to go against us. All has not been ‘Doom and Gloom’ by any means, posiIve results being
found elsewhere. The Junior SecIon again thrived with addiIonal members making Friday and Monday nights very busy with record BBQ and bar returns.
The U19 and U12 sides both reached the playoffs of their respecIve compeIIons and a record number of Juniors represented the club in the various age groups. Junior players represented the County and District squads -‐ all returning with creditable performances.
The Annual Dinner was parIcularly successful, as was Presidents Day, the Old Boys game and our involvement with ‘Ten Not Out’. We have hosted touring sides from Scotland and India, and have been the venue for school’s fesIvals whilst working hard to improve relaIons with members of the community.
The Free Foresters’ game was very successful -‐ good weather, a good atmosphere created by plenIful support and quality cricket. The match was won by our Club side -‐ a notable century scored by Lee Thomason being the highlight.
All that we do takes input, commitment and hard work from a large number of people. The work that goes on ‘behind the scenes’ is considerable. My thanks and appreciaIon goes to all those players, parents, commiAee members, sponsors, coaches and managers who have helped carry the Club on during this season. Teas are a parIcularly arduous duty and many volunteers filled the rota -‐ our grateful thanks!
There is a great deal of hard work to be done to get the Club back on track. One season where we are not so successful is not catastrophic, but it may serve to remind us all that we cannot take things for granted and let complacency creep in. If we intend to play the game at the highest level then we take the lessons learned from 2016, pick ourselves up again and work to achieve the success that we have previously enjoyed.
I am looking forward to 2017, and wish you all the very best.
Colin Greetham, Chairman

For the SuAon Coldfield Saturday 4th XI team the season was a good one and to get a mid-‐table finish with such a youthful side was a wonderful effort. From Max Smith taking the first wicket of the season in our match against Aston to the same player scoring the winning runs on the final day to seal a victory against Four Oaks the side played the games in the correct way, hard but fair, and with respect for the opposiIon.
We’ve had so many brilliant individual performances from our under 15s, including 2 50s from Sam Bogle opening the basng, a 6 wicket haul from Harry Lucas Williams, Archie Bogle with 28 wickets including 2 five wickets hauls. We also had hard hisng big scores from Nathen Lawrence [42] and Ibrahiem Guizer [68] together with an amazing 126 from Elliot Neddle
We were lucky to have brilliant efforts from our keepers Ben Dunnington and Dan Hurst who both hit good runs for the team and helped keep team spirits high.
Pravin Ramachandram, who averaged over 60 runs, held the basng together both winning and saving matches for the team.
On a personal note would like to thank everyone who played for the team this year. Your efforts and good humour made the season and my captaincy easy and a lot of fun. I hope to see you all next season.
