Gospel Meditation Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

People are not property. We cannot exchange them at will or simply use them for our own designs and purposes. What does the word “commitment” mean to you? We can begin to understand its meaning by looking at some synonyms: dedication, devotion, allegiance,

loyalty, faithfulness, fidelity, and bond. Commitment is primarily about relationship, and Jesus is all about relationships: how our lives affect others, how we treat our brothers and sisters, how we resolve conflict, and how we view the vows of marriage. Jesus’ teachings on obeying the commandments, murder, reconciliation, marriage, divorce, and adultery all stem from the sacredness of commitment. All of this has a God connection.

We can easily see one another as interchangeable and dispensable. We treat so much of our lives this way. What

works today may not be what I want tomorrow. We search and search for the right thing only to find our hearts still restless in the end. Is real happiness achievable this side of the grave? Sometimes, we expect too much out of others, and want our relationships to fill a hole that we should work out how to fill ourselves. Any seasoned married couple will tell you that their love for one another changes as time passes. Even though the understanding of romance changes as life changes, the dedication, devotion, allegiance, loyalty, faithfulness, and fidelity all remain and even deepen.

Some relationships can be hurtful, and God does not want us to live with abuse or pain. Also, how a relationship develops is sometimes out of our control, and we become the victim of someone else’s decision. But we can’t be self-focused in our relationships and see them exclusively as self-fulfilling ends. We are companions on life’s journey with varying depths of relationships being enjoyed by all who are with us along the way. We have the freedom to choose. God asks us to do so wisely, with right judgment and thinking.

Broc Community Food Shelf The Broc boxes at the entrances to each church for the winter are oatmeal for Christ the King, and pasta sauce for St. Patrick. (IHM collects for the Community Cupboard the third weekend of the month.) Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Ash Wednesday Almsgiving Collection There will be a special collection on Ash Wednesday to support Vermont Catholic Charities. This agency provides financial and emotional support to individuals and families throughout Vermont through the programs offered which include counseling, emergency aid, prison ministry, Project Rachel, and residential care homes. A portion of the collection will go to help fund the Bishop de Goesbriand grants which are awarded to Vermont nonprofits who are making a difference in their communities.  Envelopes will be available in the churches. Please know that every gift, whatever the size, makes a difference. Thank you for your generosity.

2020 Contribution Envelopes If you have not picked up your 2020 offertory envelopes, please call the rectory to make arrangements to get them, or let us know you no longer want them. Call 773-6820, Ext. 8 for Jerry, or Ext. 9 for Gary. Also, let us know if you would like to start receiving offertory envelopes. Thank you very much for your generosity.

CRS Rice Bowl this Lent! Our parish community will participate in the national Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl collection this Lent. It is a program of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving in which we will help to alleviate poverty in our own diocese and internationally. This is a family, home-based program that provides prayer, giving, and fasting opportunities so families can participate. More will be said on it in the weeks to come. If you’re interested, you can look at the website: www.crsricebowl.org. We hope you join the more than 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States in a life-changing Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up your family’s CRS Rice Bowl in church beginning the weekend of Feb. 23. During the 40 days of Lent, we will reflect on the challenge of global hunger and how it affects our human family.

February 15–21, 2020 FOR THE DIOCESE OF BURLINGTON

On February 26, our Lenten journey begins with Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday marks the first day of the 40

days of Lent dedicated to reflection, fasting, almsgiving, and good works in preparation for Easter. One concrete way we can prepare and share our gifts with others is to participate in the collection on Ash Wednesday to support the outreach work of Vermont Catholic Charities, including the Bishop de Goësbriand Grants for Human Advancement. These grants are awarded to Vermont non-profit organizations that are making a difference in the daily lives of people living in their communities.

Vermont Catholic Charities has been awarding Bishop de Goësbriand grants since 2011. To date, over 230 grants have been given out, totaling more than $480,000. What a wonderful expression of our faith — to serve others. Organizations receiving funding have included homeless shelters, right to life programs, and food programs for children and families.

Here are a few examples of how these grants impact the lives of Vermonters.

✦ The Upper Valley Haven in White River Junction received a grant to support the Seasonal Shelter, which helped 87 people stay out of the cold. One client stated, “When I arrived at the Haven I was broken. I felt frozen, totally overwhelmed by all my problems, but the Service Coordinator told me I could do anything.” Julio noticed a sign seeking help at the Mobil station near the Haven. Julio inquired, filled out an application, went on interview, and landed the job. Five weeks after starting work, Julio moved into an apartment with a roommate.

✦ Good Beginnings of Central Vermont received a grant to support its infant carriers and emergency assistance programs. The grant helped a total of 26 families, or 65 individuals (35 parents and 30 children).

✦ The Addison County Community Action Group (HOPE) received a grant to support its food shelf and financial assis-

tance program. The agency commented, “Your support has a tremendous impact on our ability to respond to the needs of some of the most vulnerable in our county. Thank you for your continued commitment and support to our community.”

✦ The Catholic Center at UVM received a grant to buy food to prepare and serve community meals at the Salvation Army. One student commented, “To be part of the community of Burlington or any place we may live in the future, there cannot be an ignorance of the fact that many go without food, warmth, and shelter. It has been a joy and privilege to serve at the Salvation Army in Burlington.”

As we begin this Lenten journey together, we ask you

to prayerfully consider participating in the Ash Wednesday collection - any gift, no matter the size, makes a difference. As a Catholic community, let’s continue to do Christ’s work here in Vermont and show Christ’s love to our neighbors in their times of need. By sharing our gifts with others, we prepare ourselves to celebrate the good news that Jesus Christ has risen.

— Mary Beth Pinard, executive director of Vermont Catholic Charities Inc.

“Lent is a favorable season for opening the doors to all those

in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ.”

— Pope Francis
