Gospel Meditation Third Sunday of Lent
We allow our self-definition to be given over to many things. Society, friends, family, work, social groups, ethnicity, and ins t i tu t ions define , classify, and color how we perceive ourselves. When we listen predominantly to the voices of others, we lose
touch with our own inner voice. If we listen carefully within, we can discover that we are in want and need, and know our incompleteness. Loneliness, sadness, and self-image can propel us outwards in an attempt to fill those gaps. We can become victims of our own prejudices, indulging in things that can only satisfy us for a short time, if at all.
It is no wonder then that money and power are things that are so fervently sought after. As long as we can keep a steady supply going, the illusion of fulfillment and satisfaction can falsely persuade us as craftily as a master magician’s act. We live with illusions, not truth. Thus, some of the wealthiest folks are actually the unhappiest. Whether or not we admit it, the lies we live and pursue will ultimately expose our superficiality. We all have to wrestle with who we are and what gives our lives purpose and meaning, learning to listen more deeply, not to what others are saying about you, but to what God is echoing in your heart.
We can easily become confused, not only about who we are, but who God is. Even the disciples and the Samaritan woman at the well missed the point Jesus was trying to make. There is only one who can satisfy the deepest yearnings and longings of our hearts – Jesus the Messiah. It is not the work of p America that will lead us to happiness or greatness, but the work of the soul. We continue to resist acknowledging this and are happier in our illusory world. The living water we truly need comes not from the source of a well, but from the Source of Life. Only God can reveal the truth of our sins, the superficiality of our pursuits, and the illusions we hold so dear. Only Jesus can save us from ourselves and give us what we really need, that we may find real contentment and life!

Meet Yvone Meet Yvone from Kenya. She learned proper nutrition and hygiene practices to help keep her healthy and in school. Yvone now has a chance to dream and the strength to follow those dreams. How can you ensure that young people in your community receive proper nutrition? Visit crsricebowl.org for more information.
Sick? Stay Home! Bishop Coyne would like to remind people that the obligation to attend Mass is always lifted for those who are sick, and if you are sick, you should stay home even out of charity to avoid the spread of infection. This especially applies to those with cold or flu-like symptoms. We must all remember that many members of our community have increased vulnerability to illness, making it more dangerous, even life-threatening, for them. Also, until further notice, the sign of peace should not involve physical contact.

And from Our Pastor…Dear Friends and Parishioners: In thinking about Lent this year, I decided I needed to concentrate more on fasting. While I always need to pay close attention to prayer and almsgiving, it seems that fasting takes a backseat to everything else. As I have said throughout Lent, fasting is identified with giving up certain food or drink, whether for the whole season of Lent or for particular days like Ash Wednesday or Good Friday. One can also fast from an activity that eats up much of our time. We fast for two main reasons. First, in fasting we voluntarily go without something to be in solidarity with those who go without involuntarily. It helps us remember just how blessed we are and the abundance of food and activity that is at our fingertips. Much of the world starves daily from the basic resources we take for granted and yet we are upset if those basic resources are not there exactly when we want them. We also fast for another reason. In foregoing something important to us, we remember that Christ is the true center of our lives. We can go without and live fine without certain foods and activities in our lives, but not without Christ. In fasting, we turn to him to remember he indeed is the center of our lives, and not food, drink, or earthly activities. When you fast, be sure to add more time to prayer to keep that lesson in front of you always. I would encourage us all this Lent to think about fasting in another way. We don’t talk much about the sin of gluttony any more, but indeed it is one of the seven deadly sins. According to christianity.com, gluttony is “...defined as the over-indulgence or lack of self-restraint in food, drink, or wealth items, especially as status tokens. The English word comes from the Latin and means “to gulp.” Gluttony worships food to feed our own self-love.” In my opinion, gluttony is not as concerned with the amount of food each of us consumes, although that always needs to be regulated and thought about. In this modern world, gluttony can also apply to the amount of food we waste. According to the USDA, “In the United States, food waste is estimated at between 30-40 percent of the food supply. This estimate, based on estimates from USDA’s Economic Research Service of 31 percent food loss at the retail and consumer levels, corresponded to approximately 133 billion pounds and $161 billion worth of food in 2010.” If that doesn’t shock you, reread it. Imagine how many people could be fed with all that food we waste. Our homes, restaurants and grocery stores are overflowing with food, much of which is wasted and thrown out. It is truly a tragedy that this happens. While we cannot control what happens beyond our homes, maybe Lent and its tradition of fasting can help us ask these questions: What do I eat? Where does it come from? Do I buy more than I can reasonably eat between shopping trips? How much food do I waste? Is my kitchen filled with too much food, a portion of which I will waste? Am I careful in restaurants not to waste the food placed in front of me? While I cannot control the billions in waste each year, I can control what I do, what I eat and drink, and what I waste. Food is a moral issue. It is my prayer that our Lenten fasting may inspire each of us to avoid the sin of gluttony by buying, eating, and wasting less food. True fasting will lead us to remember the place of food in our lives, make us more generous, thankful and prayerful, and ultimately will help us realize that the food we eat is a gift from God.
Peace, Fr. Bernie
In this sacred season of Lent, we are called to pray, fast, and give alms. There are no age limits to these three activities; each person needs to decide in conscience how to pray, fast, and give alms. Remember that the Fridays of Lent are meant to be days of abstinence of meat. Here are some parish opportunities for prayer and reflection:
Daily MassJoin us for daily Mass throughout Lent. The Mass schedule is found in this bulletin.
The Way of the Cross This is a very traditional and beautiful Lenten prayer, in which we walk with Jesus in the last moments of his life. There are three opportunities each week for you to pray the Way of the Cross: Tuesday after the 6 PM Mass at St. Patrick’s; Friday at noon at Christ the King; Friday at 6:30 PM at Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Friday Lenten DinnersA simple, Lenten meatless dinner is served at Immaculate Heart of Mary on Fridays from 5 PM to 6:30 PM. We will then pray the Way of the Cross upstairs in the church.
Pray the Passion of Jesus On Wednesday evenings (starting 3/4 and concluding 4/18), join us at Christ the King Church at 6:30 PM for a Holy Hour that will include Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Vespers, Benediction, and a prayerful reading of the Passion from Matthew, which we will hear on Palm Sunday. Each week we will hear part of that Passion reading and Fr. Bernie will preach on it. There will be time for silent prayer. A great way to get ready to hear the Passion on Palm Sunday!
Light of the World RetreatThe Light of the World Retreat is from 27 to 30 March. It is a time for us to grow deeper in the Lord Jesus, and will be a time of prayer, community, and fellowship. It will encourage us to surrender our lives to Christ and the Holy Spirit.
