Principal’s Message—Mme Marla Tonita Happy Easter and welcome to April! March was a very full month at École J.E. Lapointe School with online report cards, La Semaine de la fran- cophonie which included a concert at our school, ski trips to both Jasper and Rabbit Hill, a band trip to the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra dress rehearsal, and the start of high school registration for our grade 9 students! As well, we were thrilled to host our very first Car- naval for our French Im- mersion students. Thanks to the huge efforts of our French Immersion teach- ers, as well as the volun- teering support of several parents and community members, these students experienced a full day of hands-on French language and culture learning. There were lots of outdoor physi- cal activities, a wood- burning fire to enjoy with a cup of hot chocolate, fresh and authentic crêpes with maple syrup, and the most memorable for many of us – la tire – maple syrup boiled to the candy stage and then poured on snow, twirled into taffy on a pop- sicle stick and then de- voured! Students also en- joyed small-group presen- tations with Franco- Albertan artist Roger Dal- laire, who engaged all of us with his traditional folk songs and instruments and story-telling! With a little bit of snow and mild tem- peratures, we couldn’t have wished for a better day for our first Carnaval. Our entire school popula- tion was also treated to a fabulous and moving presentation by Kevin Locke. Mr. Locke is of the Lakota Nation and hails from North Dakota, alt- hough he travels the world quite extensively now sharing his beautiful mes- sages with others. We were treated to a full hour of traditional music, dance, and story-telling – some- times shared with the use of the Indigenous flute, or American Indian Sign Lan- guage. The Hoop Dance was intricately performed using 28 hoops of four colours and designs of all sorts appeared throughout the dance! A highlight for many was when some of our students were invited to participate and learn to Hoop Dance themselves. Oh how wonderful to see such sheer joy on the faces of all of these students. Mr. Locke’s messages of the interconnections of human- ity, of humanity, the cycles of life, renewal, and the eagle-strength that each person possesses (especially youth) were powerful. Premier Boys

The Premier Boys team brought home gold on Thursday, March

10. The boys took the league championship by defeating Christ

the King in their final game of the year, taking home the banner

and capping an undefeated season!

Mr. Mistol and Mr. Slade are very proud of the work ethic this

team showed all year.

A huge thanks goes out to Vern Gerhardt for all his contribu-

tions to making this team successful.

Senior Boys

The Senior Boy’s team finished the 2015/2016 season with a

bronze medal in the LDAA play-offs. A big thank you goes out

to all the parents and fans that supported the team this year.

Good luck to all the grade 9 players who will be moving on to

high school next year, you will be missed. Go Sabres Go!

Senior Girls

The Senior Girls team had a tough season this year competing

against some great teams in the LDAA senior league. They im-

proved lots and did a great job defeating Riverview in playoffs

to earn a spot in the semi finals. Great job girls and best of

luck to those of you heading to the high school next year.

Premier Girls

The Premier Girls team made major strides this year against some

tough competition. The team worked hard each week and greatly

improved their defense throughout the season. Despite the ob-

stacles, they kept up their energy and made their coaches proud.

We look forward to continual growth next season. Well done,

Premier Girls!

Sabre Athletics—Basketball

Another amazing trip was enjoyed by 40 junior high students as we skied Jasper's Marmot Basin on March 11. Warm temperatures, beautiful sun and blue skies as well as amazing conditions were enjoyed by all.

If you would like to be a part of this next year, watch for trip information in early January.

The JEL Rabbit Hill Ski Club season has come to an end, but unfortunately this year was not as successful as we have had in previous years. Three out of five trips were cancelled due to low attendance. If you were registered on a cancelled trip a full refund will be issued.

If you would like to join us next year for a fun night at Rabbit Hill please make sure to sign up!
