August 1 – September 15 Historical and Cultural Society of Clay

• Opening Reception

August 6 5-7 Anne Kaese, a local calligrapher, will give a presentation and tour of the exhibit during the reception. This presentation and reception is free and open to the public.

• Heritage Volumes Page Turning August 8 ―10 am

The exhibit cases will be opened for the public to view different pages of the bound editions. General admission is required

• The making of The Saint John’s Bible Presentation August 10 ―1 pm

Local calligrapher and The Saint John’s Bible expert, Anne Kaese, will be offering presentations and tour of the exhibition. Her lively and informative lecture will cover the methods (modern and traditional) used to produce this art work as well as showcasing some of the imaginative and original artworks. She will also cover the history of The Saint John’s Bible project, people, places and materials complementing The Saint John’s Bible exhibit. You will get a behind the scenes view of a project that most have said could never be done again by humans. Presentation is included with paid admission.

• Taking Inspiration from The Saint John’s Bible Calligraphy Class

August 22 & 23 – 9 am-2:30 pm

An informal calligraphy class that is heavy on color and light on lettering. Students will work in the gallery of The Saint John’s Bible exhibition drawing inspiration from the illuminations. The cost for the class is $125 or $105 for HCSCC members. All supplies are included.

• Saint John’s Bible Calligraphy Demonstration August 25 – 3pm-4pm

After viewing the prints and bound Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible, learn how it was done with Anne Kaese, local calligraphy artist. She will demonstrate the techniques and styles of calligraphy that were used to make The St. John’s Bible. Demonstration is included in the price of admission to the museum.

• A Dabble in Calligraphy August 27 – 6:30pm-9:00pm

This is a fun class where you will learn a hand of style of calligraphy similar to what is used in The Saint John’s Bible and other famous Bibles. This class is for people who want to learn a little about calligraphy, The St John’s Bible and the life of a scribe. Cost is $25. Prepayment is required.

• Illuminated Letter Workshop September 3 ― 6:30 pm -9:00pm

The class will cover illumination, drawing versals, and decorating a medieval capital letter. No previous experience needed.—just a sense of fun and discovery! Cost is $25. Prepayment is required.

• The Saint John’s Bible Bus Tour September 5 (See next page for details)

• 9/11 Commemoration: Love and Forgiveness in The Saint John’s Bible September 11 ― 6 pm–7pm

The Saint John's Bible was in production at the time of this event and the artists felt that 9/11 had to be included in the Bible in a meaningful and uplifting way. Spend a while with Anne Kaese focusing on “Love and Forgiveness” using Illuminations from The Saint John’s Bible. This will be a quiet time of thoughtfulness and reflection as the illuminations are used to think about how one grow from hard experiences. Presentation is FREE and OPEN to the PUBLIC.

• Sending The Saint John’s Bible On Its Next Adventure Sept. 15 ― 2pm Closing presentation and tour with Anne Kaese included with admission.

The Saint John’s Bible Bus Tour September 5 ― 7:00 am – 8:00 pm (all day event)

You have seen the prints, now see the original manuscript at the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library. The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County offers this rare opportunity to get inside the vault to see the original The Saint John’s Bible at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. The one-day, fun-filled day trip to see The Saint John’s Bible will cost $75 per person and will include the following:

Air-conditioned motor coach transportation to and from St. John’s The ever-scintillating commentary of host and Calligraphy guru extraordinaire Anne

Kaese A presentation about the entire Saint John’s Bible project Time in the current exhibit of original pages on display A private guided tour of the vault where the original Bible is preserved

(in small groups of ten)*

Optional noon prayer service A most tasty lunch in the cafeteria (may not be all together) Free time to take the Abbey tour, explore the Campus, revisit the exhibit, and shop

Schedule: 7am Depart Hjemkomst Center parking lot (please park down on the river end)

Brief coffee break at Mc Donald’s in Alexandria 10am Presentation 11am -4pm Private tour of the vault in groups of ten throughout the day*

(*in small groups of 10) Lunch in the cafeteria Free time

4:30pm Depart St. John’s Quick supper break in Alexandria

8pm or so Return to Moorhead Seating limited to 40. Payment will secure your seat. Refunds will be given up to one week prior to the departure (August 29) or if we can replace you. Payment can be made in cash, by check, or by credit card. Once forty seats are sold, a waiting list will be started.
