Let your mind dwell on whatever is true,

whatever is honorable and whatever is right. --Philippians 4:8

For the past 100 years, Saint Paul’s School has provided a quality Catholic education to thousands of young men who have been entrusted to our care. Four years ago, we launched an ambitious, multiphase capital campaign designed “to honor our past but plan for our future.” With the exception of the field house phase one of the campaign (the football/soccer/track complex) has been completed. We have now embarked on Phase 2 of the campaign – remodeling of La Salle Hall (the old dormitory building) into usable classrooms, an art studio, labs for our new engineering and biomedical programs, JROTC, a guidance complex, campus ministry office, and spaces for many student activities such as our robotics and video clubs. The plans are exciting. We invite you to view them on our website. The original Phase 2 called for the demolition of La Salle Hall and the building of a totally new facility. However, the initiation of Phase 2 was delayed due to the faltering economy. It was during this period that contractors, and architects convinced us that remodeling La Salle Hall would give us 33,500 sq ft at a cost of $3.5 million dollars. The original plan for a new building entailed a 10,000 sq ft area at a cost of $4.1 million dollars. So, realizing the significant difference in space and cost we proceeded with the remodeling. This decision enables us to be efficient stewards of our parents’ finances and the school’s resources. Thus, La Salle Hall, which served as a home for many years to many students, will have new life. As with Phase 1 we have now moved into Phase 2 without having all of the funding needed for the building, but we felt the needs of the students could no longer wait. Throughout its history, the Christian Brothers and their colleagues launched ambitious projects with fear and trepidation – but also with the eyes of faith, since Saint La Salle told the brothers they should view everything with the eyes of faith. I thus agreed to begin Phase 2, knowing that, as in the past, generous and capable people will assist us as long as we remain faithful to the Mission of providing a human and Christian education to young people. Parents and alumni have received information highlighting the specifics of Phase 2. I realize that many demands are placed upon you, but I ask you to consider, if you are able, helping us with Phase 2 of the capital campaign. We ask for your prayers and support as we keep Saint de La Salle’s Mission alive in Covington so that the young men entrusted to our care may grow in knowledge and wisdom and learn, in the words of the Prophet Micah, “to live justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God.”

Michael is doing a summer internship with the local magazine Inside Northside in preparation for attending Louisiana State University in the fall of 2011. Michael will major in journalism and hopes to get a position on The Daily Reveille, the student newspaper. The school is grateful for Michael’s diligent work during the 2010-11 school years. His weekly column brought to light many of the wonderful activities that happen on the campus, and gave those people not familiar with the school a view into many of things that take place. Michael’s job as columnist will be turned over to Andrew Mullet, who will write for the 2011-12 school year. By Karen Hebert
