Message from Brother Ray “I need your help”

Dear Alumnus, If you’ve been following the progress of Saint Paul’s over the years, you know that we have built upon the wonderful legacy that you, our graduates, have left us. Today, our school stands larger and stronger than ever. You have every reason to be proud of your alma mater. We must, however, continue to progress. Accordingly, I ask for your help by contributing to the 2012 Annual Fund. Many of you have already contributed, but most of you have not. And we need the support of our alumni. Just as in your day, tuition does not cover school operations, much less fund special projects. Only through the dedicated generosity of our alumni can we continue to offer our students, tomorrow’s leaders, the finest educational opportunity. Here are some of our plans for this year’s drive:

While everyone cannot be a large donor, almost all can donate at a small level. I ask that you contribute, no matter how small – even $5 or $1. My goal this year is to increase the number of givers. Currently we have some alums who send $10 or $20 a month. If all of our several thousand alums did that, Saint Paul’s would advance even further. If you can help, either write a check to Saint Paul's Annual Fund and return to me via mail or click on the donate button.

Saint Paul's is blessed today with a wonderful group of students and faculty who are working together to implement our mission. Regardless of your decision in this matter, know of my continued efforts, and those of the Christian Brothers and their colleagues, on behalf of the students of Saint Paul's. Know, too, of my prayer, and those of all of us at Saint Paul's School, for you and your family. Please call me or the alumni office if you have questions or need information. Sincerely, Brother Ray Bulliard, FSC 17th Christian Brother Principal of Saint Paul’s School

Saint John Baptist de La Salle … Pray for Us

Faith

Students at Saint Paul’s witnessed two wonderful demonstrations of faith to commemorate Holy Week and prepare for Easter Sunday. The Marian Players, under the direction of Denny Charbonnet, performed the Passion Play for the public on April 3 and again for the students and faculty on April 4. The cast included the following students: Shawn-Wesley Skinner portraying Jesus; Seth Hagan as Pontius Pilate; Morgan Gonzales as Judas Iscariot; Drew Guin as Peter; Christian Bergeron and Andrew McInnis as Roman soldiers; Andy Matthews as Simon of Cyrenia; and Ariean Loo-Hernanadez,Patrick Duncan, Nikita Isupov, Christoffer Friend, Andrew Roux, Jonathan Damaré, Matthew Stumpf ; and Sean Page as the Narrator. On Holy Thursday, April 5, the student body assembled in the Gene Bennett Sports Complex for the Mandatum – the washing of the feet prayer service. This year, the prayer was led by junior religion teacher Luke Barwick. Senior Austin Hummel gave the reflection. Following the reflection, Student Council President Zach Barnett and Vice-President Shawn-Wesley Skinner called down students from each grade level and faculty members to have their feet washed. This re-enactment of Jesus washing the feet of the Apostles is truly a touching tradition at St. Paul’s. Music was provided by the Lasallian Band and chorus, which did an amazing rendition of “Just a Closer Walk With Thee.” Students left campus at the end of Thursday, prepared for the celebration of the Resurrection. by Andrew Mullet

Iron Wolves – State Champions! The Saint Paul’s School

The power lifting team brought home its first state championship with a decisive victory by scoring 41 team points. The Iron Wolves had 3 individual state champs, but all lifters scored and were an integral part of the team victory. The results were as follows: Blake Ricalde was named outstanding lifter for 5A on the lightweight platform, and Kyle Cuntz broke the state record for bench press by shooting up 385 lbs. Most lifters set personal bests, and this was a true team effort. All lifters conducted themselves with class and sportsmanship, and Coach Pierre, Dickens, and Kellum would like to thank all iron wolves for their hard work dating back to November. The strength of the wolf is the pack, but a beast lies within each of these Iron Wolves. by Joe Dickens

Leadership Week The Saint Paul’s School

From April 16-20, Saint Paul’s celebrated its annual Leadership Week, which consisted of a number of special assemblies for the student body. Leadership Week was sponsored by the Student Council under President Zachary Barnett, Vice President Shawn-Wesley Skinner and moderator Ann Forster. On April 17, student leaders throughout the school representing academic achievers, athletic teams, and extracurricular activates gathered in the cafeteria for a special breakfast honoring them. This year’s guest speaker was Chris Blanchard ‘05, a former Student Council president himself, who inspired all of the student leaders to use their many skills and talents to help others. On April 18, candidates for next year’s Student Council Executive Board gave speeches via Wolf-TV to the student body, and elections were held during the first-period classes that morning. After closely contested races, the Executive Board for the 2011-2012 school year will consist of: rising senior Connor Mahoney, president; rising senior Justin Elzy, vice president; rising sophomore Samuel Giberga, secretary; and rising freshman Austin Grashoff, treasurer. On Thursday, April 19, a special leadership assembly was held in the Student Center for the student body and featured two distinguished guest speakers. The first speaker was a Saint Paul’s alumnus, Don Lagarde ‘78; the second speaker was Coach Joe Lombardi of the New Orleans Saints, a grandson of the legendary coach of Vince Lombardi. Bother speakers imparted some great words of wisdom on the students and gave energetic, engaging talks. Later, Thursday, students gathered in the Gene Bennett Sports Complex for the annual Challenge Night between Saint Paul’s and Saint Scholastica Academy. The night consists of spirited rivalry in various contests between the schools to determine a winner. The Wolves cam out victorious once again with Saint Paul’s defeating the Doves’ varsity volleyball team. To wrap up Leadership Week, the annual “Year in Review” assembly was held on April 20. Outgoing officers Zach Barnett and Shawn-Wesley Skinner delivered excellent farewell speeches before announcing the new officers. To close the assembly, everyone had the chance to reflect on the year while watching a spectacular photo slideshow produced by Jack Murphy. by Andrew Mullet

Community Service The Saint Paul’s School

Service Sophomore Service Day

Sophomore Service Day was held on Friday, April 20th with the help of faculty and parent volunteers. As in previous years, the students both enjoyed and took much from the day. Several Northshore and Southshore sites were visited this year. The sites were: Alpha House, Alton Elementary School, Covington Elementary School, Habitat for Humanity, K-Bar-B Youth Home, Lyon Elementary School, New Directions Alternative School, New Heights Therapeutic Riding Center, Pace, The Covington Food Bank, City of Covington, and Windsor Senior Living Center. After the day’s service, parent and owner of Pat’s seafood, Ralph Patrick, prepared jambalaya and the Saint Paul’s Mother’s Club served lunch to all of the sophomores under the Wolfdome. The day ended with a prayer service in Our Lady of Peace Chapel and several reflections from the students. by Kevin Moore

Recycling Club On Tuesday, April 24th , senior Jack Murphy was presented the Spirit of Community award by Michael Wahl, a representative of Prudential Financial Companies. This award was presented to Jack as a Louisiana Distinguished Finalist – one of only five in the state. He is being recognized by The Prudential Company for his leadership in environmental issues and the community garden. An excerpt from Jack’s essay is below: ...... The first year, I had about ten members join the club, but not many helped spread the word, even fewer went to the meetings, and even less actually recycled. It was a tough year. In the past two years things have changed. It is hard to find any recyclables in my school’s trashcans anymore, because the recycle bins are always full. The club—my passion—is thriving with over forty-five members, two large dumpsters that are emptied weekly, and 50 recycle bins. Not only has it grown in size, it has grown in services: the club now recycles electronics, paper, plastics, and aluminum, and I have even opened our recycling service to the community. Also, I have created and maintain a 240 square foot community garden that grows food for the local food bank. The club works with habitat restoration programs, and we even have a recycling building. I have instilled a mindset into my school that will move the club forward even after I graduate. I believe that my club has placed environmental-bait into the minds of my community that will stay with them throughout their lives…… View Times Picayune Article

National Honor Society The Saint Paul’s School

Wolftracks Page 10

The Brother Charles Crouzet Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted forty members in a ceremony held on campus in the Our Lady of Peace Chapel on April 26, 2012. The ceremony was followed by a reception sponsored by the Saint Paul’s Renaissance Board and hosted by the parents of NHS members. The reception was held in the beautiful courtyard of LaSalle Hall. During the ceremony, Principal Brother Ray Bulliard recounted the history of Brother Charles Crouzet and the legacy he left behind at Saint Paul’s. Brother Charles was a wonderful example of someone who lived his life according to the four principles held in high esteem by all National Honor Society members across the country: character, service, leadership, and scholarship. The students of Saint Paul’s were the beneficiaries of his dedication to these principles. Shortly before leaving Saint Paul’s to head to the retirement community for Christian Brothers, Brother Charles in his parting words to Brother Jeffrey Calligan, then principal of Saint Paul’s, said “tell the students I will never forget them.” He lives on because Brother Ray keeps Brother Charles’s story alive each year by presenting it to the newly inducted NHS members. As a result, the students will never forget Brother Charles’s dedication to Saint Paul’s High School. The forty new inductees have a tremendous responsibility in fulfilling their roles as NHS members and adhering to the four principles. During the ceremony, Gabe Emerson, vice president of the NHS, urged the boys to “take advantage of all the NHS has to offer” and to give back to the community by living the four principles; tutoring is one way to accomplish giving back to Saint Paul’s. Gabe touted the success of the new Supper Club tutoring program which began as a way to address the needs of students who are actively involved in after school extra-curricular activities. The Supper Club tutoring program is modeled after the dormitory life experience that was present on Saint Paul’s campus years ago. Part of the success of dormitory life experienced by the students was based upon having access to after school help with homework. The tutors involved with Supper Club offer the same guidance, plus a delicious meal concludes the tutoring session. Thanks to the efforts of the SPS Mother’s Club and Vintage Moms, every Thursday evening the 20 – 30 students and teachers involved with the Supper Club tutoring program enjoy a delicious homemade dinner after the hour long tutoring session.

In her closing remarks, Mrs. Jeaneen Schmitt, advisor to the NHS, recognized the efforts of the following students and teachers regularly involved with the Supper Club tutoring program: Gabe Emerson, Shane Burkholder, Evan Heitzman, Jack Murphy, Andrew Mullet, Nathan Grotte, and Patrick Richards, as well as teachers Ann Forster, Mary Pierson, Lee Pierre, Jan Gardner, Brian Logarbo and Karen Hebert. The tutoring program provided by the National Honor Society is a valuable resource to the students of Saint Paul’s. There is no doubt that with this new group of inductees the NHS will continue to experience success with this program. Congratulations to the forty new inductees! Brother Charles would be very proud. by Jeaneen Schmidt

Biomedical Curriculum in Full Swing A four-year high school curriculum that helps students prepare in depth for medical fields is now available at St. Paul’s School in Covington. On March 29th, 17 Saint Paul’s Students travelled to Houston to compete in the Shell Eco-Marathon competition. The Shell Eco-marathon challenges high school and college student teams from around the world to design, build and test energy efficient vehicles. With annual events in the Americas, Europe and Asia, the winners are the teams that go the farthest distance using the least amount of energy. Thanks to our parent volunteers and sponsors, we were able to build 4 cars for competition this year. “Mac Daddy”, the red truck, was the second place winner in bio diesel urban concept design! Sponsors included: Banner Chevrolet, Bisso Marine, Cembell Industries of La Place, Mike Cobb, Steve Haller, La Farge Concrete, Tim Lindsey , LOOP, Paretti Mazda/Mazda USA, and Saint Paul’s Renaissance.
