The Salem LIFE NEWSLETTER OF SALEM EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH SANDWICH, ILLINOIS NOVEMBER 12, 2018 VOL. 45, NO. 11 Dear Friend, “What if the only things you had today were what you gave thanks for yesterday?” If this statement was true, most of us would probably have little or nothing today. So often we take people and things for granted and often do not give thanks to God for them. We certainly have much for which we should offer God our thanks. In The Small Catechism, Martin Luther states that we should thank God because “he provides me with food and clothing, home and family, daily work, and all I need from day to day.” On Thanksgiving Day many of us will gather with family or friends and give thanks for the abundant blessings of this past year. But in his first letter to the Thessalonians, Paul encourages us to “give thanks in all circumstances.” Every day should be a Thanksgiving Day! Even when we are going through very difficult times, there are always plenty of blessings for which we should give thanks to God. Should we give thanks when we are doing well? Yes. Should we give thanks when we are dealing with health problems? Yes. Should we give thanks when we are struggling with work issues? Yes. Should we give thanks when we are dealing with conflicts with other people? Yes. Should we give thanks when we are grieving? Yes. Should we give thanks when we are having financial problems? Yes. Should we give thanks when we are discouraged? Yes. The Bible tells us that we are to “give thanks in all circumstances!” In Christ,

“Silent Night” Midweek Advent Services

The hymn “Silent Night” will be the focus of our midweek Advent services this year. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the composition of this beloved Christmas hymn. Our midweek Advent services will begin at 6:00 p.m. on the first three Tuesdays of December. Our schedule will be as follows: December 4th: “A Silent Night of Peace” (verse 1) December 11th: “A Silent Night of Glory” (verse 2) December 18th: “A Silent Night of Love” (verse 3)

In 1818, a roving band of actors was performing in towns throughout the Austrian Alps. On December 23 they arrived at Oberndorf, a village near Salzburg where they were to re-enact the story of Christ’s birth in the small Church of St. Nicholas.

Unfortunately, the St. Nicholas’ church organ wasn’t working and would not be repaired before Christmas. (Note: some versions of the story point to mice as the problem; others say rust was the culprit) Because the church organ was out of commission, the actors presented their Christmas drama in a private home. That Christmas presentation put assistant pastor Josef Mohr in a meditative mood. Instead of walking straight to his house that night, Mohr took a longer way home. The longer path took him up over a hill overlooking the village.

From that hilltop, Mohr looked down on the peaceful snow-covered village. Reveling in majestic silence of the wintry night, Mohr gazed down at the glowing Christmas-card like scene. His thoughts about the Christmas play he had just seen made him remember a poem he had written a couple of years before. That poem was about the night when angels announced the birth of the long-awaited Messiah to shepherds on a hillside.

Mohr decided those words might make a good carol for his congregation the following evening at their Christmas Eve service. The one problem was that he didn’t have any music to which that poem could be sung. So, the next day Mohr went to see the church organist, Franz Gruber. Gruber only had a few hours to come up with a melody which could be sung with a guitar. However, by that evening, Gruber had managed to compose a musical setting for the poem. It no longer mattered to Mohr and Gruber that their church organ was inoperable. They now had a Christmas carol that could be sung without that organ. On Christmas Eve, the little Oberndorf congregation heard Gruber and Mohr sing their new composition “Silent Night” to the accompaniment of Gruber’s guitar.

Salem members participated in a progressive supper to study GROWING AS DISCIPLES AND STEWARDS, Living In and Living Out God's Grace. This program was written by Rev. Kurt Nordby and highlighted six faith and discipleship practices. This resource is centered on St. Paul's words found in Ephesians 5: 1-2: "Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved Children, and live in love, as Christ loved us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God" Ephesians 5: 1-2. The theological key here is that we respond to a loving and gracious God by following Jesus. Stewardship is then framed in relationship with the other faith and discipleship practices: "pray, study, worship, invite, serve, and give".

Thanks go to those who generously offered their homes and/or provided food and drinks for the Progressive Supper: Sharon Adkins Wallis, Kelly Clason, Don and Pat Clason, and Jackie Beverage. Thanks also go to members who studied the program and presented information to the participants: Leigh Kossman, Doug Fraley, Marilyn Wouda, Bonnie Guyer, Kim Boczko, and Kelly Clason. In November and December, the church council prepares a proposed budget for the next calendar year. The pledges help in determining this plan. If you have not turned in a pledge card yet, please bring or mail it to Salem soon. Thank you for your gifts to support the ministry of Salem Lutheran Church.

Salem will be a host site for a Northern Illinois Synod Event, “Coffee with the Bishop” on Sunday afternoon, November 18, 2:00-3:30 pm. Members of the congregation are welcome. Please feel free to come and meet Bishop Jeff Clements in an informal setting.
