Grand Knight's Report:

Brother Knights, as we prepare for the Lenten Season, let us spend time in prayer and reflection.

Many people give up bad habits for Lentbut, once Lent is over, they're back to day one.

Some things we should reflect on are ways to better ourselves spiritually or physically. And we should follow through with these good Lenten disciplines all year round.

Brothers, Fiesta is around the corner and we have much work to do. Remember, the work we do is not for ourselves but for the Cathedral. We will need help withthe parade chairs. Without your help we cannot reach our goal of selling out for both parades.

CONDOLENCES

Mario Mandujano's wife, Lupita, has losther mother. Maria Lupe Alvarado passed away February 24, 2014. May she rest in peace.

Let us keep Mario & Lupita and their family in our prayer.

Ruben Alvarado, Grand Knight

Welcome, new Brothers!

Pray with Pope Francis:

The Holy Father's Prayer Intentions for March 2014 are:

Universal - Respect for Women. That all cultures may respect the rights and dignity of women.

For Evangelization - Vocations. That many young people may accept the Lord’s invitation to consecrate their lives toproclaiming the Gospel.

Field Agent's Report:

Think You Are Too Old for Coverage? Maybe Not

You are never too young or too old to consider purchasing life insurance. If you have a financial need forcoverage, or will in the future, a permanent life insurancepolicy can be just the thing you need.

When you are young and presumably healthy, coverage will be very inexpensive when compared to purchasing the same policies when you are older.

If you’ve put off purchasing coverage, or you realize that you may need additional insurance, the Order may still be able to help you, even if other companies cannot. In fact, in 2012, the issue age of our permanent life insurance products was extended to age 80. Naturally, your health, and whether or not you smoke, will be taken into consideration, so underwriting standards for risk andage apply. But, the extension is a great blessing for me – and it could be for you too. Now I can help members thatI couldn’t help before. Are you or one of your brother knights one of those members?

Whether you’re 18 or 80, the Knights of Columbus has products that will work for you and your family. I look forward to discussing coverage with you.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death.

Preparing for a fruitful Lent:

There are many wonderful resources available that can help us prepare properly for a fruitful Lenten experience.

Some of the best resources for practical Catholics, as we Knights of Columbus are, come from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. At the USCCB website this year we find the following advice:

“... The three traditional pillars of Lenten observance are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving The Church asks us to surrender ourselves to prayer and to the reading of Scripture, to fasting and to giving alms. The fasting that all do together on Fridays is but a sign of the daily Lenten discipline of individuals and households: fasting for certain periods of time, fasting from certain foods, but also fasting from other things and activities. Likewise, the giving of alms is some effort to share this world equally—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents.

“... During this Lent, the U.S. bishops are encouraging Catholics to make going to confession a significant part of their spiritual lives. They have issued a statement: God's Gift of Forgiveness: The Pastoral Exhortation on the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation that can be distributed and shared in parishes.”

God's Gift of Forgiveness: The Pastoral Exhortation on the Sacrament of Penance and

Reconciliation is offered for our edification and canbe found in its entirety on the next page of this

newsletter.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:“Peace be with you!” With these words, the Risen Lord greeted his frightened Apostles in the Upper Room on the day of his Resurrection. They were troubled, anxious, and fearful—much like each one of us at some point in our lives. Christ repeated the words, “Peace be with you.” But then he added, “Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them” (Jn 20:19-23).

What an extraordinary gift! The Risen Lord was proclaiming that all the suffering he had just endured was in order to make available the gifts of salvation and forgiveness. He wanted the Apostles to receive these gifts. He wanted them to become apostles of this forgiveness to others.

In the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation, also called confession, we meet the Lord, who wants to grant forgiveness and the grace to live a renewed life in him. In this sacrament, he prepares us to receive him free from serious sin, with a lively faith, earnest hope, and sacri- cial love in the Eucharist. The Church sees confession as so important that she requires that every Catholic go at least once a year.1 The Church also encourages fre-quent confession in order to grow closer to Christ Jesus and his Body, the Church. By the grace of the Holy Spirit, we seek forgiveness and repentance, let go of patterns

of sin, grow in the life of virtue, and witness to a joyful conver-sion. Since the graces of the sac-rament are so similar to the pur-pose of the New Evangelization, Pope Benedict XVI has said, “The New Evangelization . . . begins in the confessional!”2

We bishops and priests are eager to help you if you experience dif culty, hesitation, or uncer-tainty about approaching the Lord in this sacrament. If you have not received this healing sacrament in a long time, we are ready to

welcome you. We, whom Christ has ordained to min-ister this forgiveness in his name, are also approach-ing this sacrament, as both penitents and ministers, throughout our lives and at this special moment of grace during Lent. We want to offer ourselves to you as forgiven sinners seeking to serve in the Lord’s name.

During Lent—in addition to the various peniten-tial services during which individual confession takes place—we bishops and priests will be making ourselves available often for the individual celebration of this sacrament. We pray that through the work of the Holy Spirit, all Catholics—clergy and laity—will respond to the call of the New Evangelization to encounter Christ in the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Come to the Lord and experience the extraordinary grace of his forgiveness!

“He said to him, ‘My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must

celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and

has been found.’” (Lk 15: 31-32)
