“Dulce, do you remember my friend Earl from California?”

“The guy with the wooden leg?”

“Yeah; that’s him. I just got an e-mail from him. He knows you makegreat Halloween costumes and he wants some suggestions from you. Hewants to win the $1,000 prize that the local radio station is offering for theirbig Halloween bash.”

“He’s bald; right?”

“Yes.”

“Tell him to tie a handkerchief over his head, put on an eye patch androll his pants leg up. With his wooden leg he’ll be perfect as a pirate.”

The next day I said, “Dulce, I got another e-mail from Carl. He thinks itis terrible that you want to emphasize his wooden leg. Do you have any othersuggestions?”

“Tell him to get a brown blanket and cut holes in it for his head and hisarms so he can wear it like a robe. With his bald head he will look perfect asa monk.”

“Great idea,” I said.

“Dulce,” I said, the following day as I read the e-mail. “Carl seemsoffended that you want to bring attention to his unfortunate hair loss.”

“Well, for God’s sake,” she said. “What is wrong with him? He is baldand he does have a wooden leg.”

“Well, do you have any suggestions for him?”

“Suggestions? Oh, yes, I have suggestions. I suggest that he buy a bottleof molasses and a bag of crushed nuts. He can pour the molasses on his headand then put the crushed nuts on top of that. Then he can shove that woodenleg where the sun doesn’t shine and go as a caramel apple.”
