From Sally Sabo, President,
Santa Fe (Leonard Helman) Bridge Center As my term as President of the Board of Directors for the Leonard Helman Bridge Center comes to a close, I want to thank the many players and the members of the Board for their unfailing help in moving the Center forward. At the annual meeting in May, you will be electing three new board members. The board members will then elect a new president. Anyone interested in serving on the Board should contact Carolyn Anderson or me. The three members going off the board are Patty Stevens, Chuck Case and myself. We have been very busy during the last three years. One of the first things we did was to set up a new web site and introduce cable in the building. That’s right, we didn’t even have cable. We bought new chairs and table coverings, both of which created a more pleasing atmosphere. Storage for the extra chairs and tables was enlarged. Routine maintenance was introduced, with upgrades as needed. After years of trying, we were able to acquire the lot next door for much needed parking. We have seen many new players take lessons. Thanks to the efforts of Kathy Adelsheim and her Education Committee we now can provide a regular sequence of lessons from beginner all the way to offerings for the more experienced players. The committee’s outreach efforts, such as advertising, open houses, and Supervised Play, have made it possible to attract many new people to the game. In addition, we also have a ladder of games for players of any ability from very new to the open games. It’s thanks to our great directors that the games are mostly well attended. I want to give a shout out to Dennis Dawson whose experience as a previous owner and his extraordinary teaching ability have been sources of help for the Board and everyone who plays. A member of the Education Committee and a committed booster, he has generated many useful ideas for furthering the growth of the Center. We continue to have good fiscal results thanks in part to our building manager, who has saved the Center thousands of dollars owing to his ability to fix almost anything that needs attention. I leave the Center in good hands and look forward to its continued growth.
Sally
Director's Notebook
Table talk: Let the cards from your bidding box do most of the talking. It’s best to play all the boards in a round before discussing any hand. It’s even better to wait until the game is over to go over hands. Praise your partner and compliment the opponents on good play. Remember: It’s only a game.

I/N* Tip of the Month from Kathy Adelsheim
April 2019
OVERCALLS
An overcall at the cheapest level is a SIMPLE OVERCALL. The concept is that the
opponents have already opened showing 12-21 points.
With a good suit of 5 cards or more you may overcall (call or bid over them).
Your suit should be at least 7-8 quality points. (Remember, if you don’t get the bid your
partner will lead this suit.) To overcall at the one level requires 7-17 points (HCP+length).
To overcall at the 2 level requires a good opening hand, hopefully 13-17 points. This is
because the person who opened has already contracted for 7 tricks and you are now
contracting for 8 tricks without knowing where the remaining 15 points are.
Overcalls are a great tool to have in your bidding toolbox. It’s also a great time to think
before you bid.
*Intermediate/Newcomers (I/N) players is generally defined by ACBL as players with less than 500 masterpoints and includes a spectrum of playing skills from novice to intermediate/advanced

Announcements
Two Over One Game Force Class: Kathy Adelsheim will be teaching “Two Over One Game Force” in April and May. The class is for players with a thorough understanding of the Standard American bidding system. Two Over One is simply a modification to standard bidding methods designed to give the partnership more bidding room to find the best game contracts and to explore slam options. The 6 session class will meet on 5 consecutive Wednesdays in April and early May with a sixth session scheduled a month later for questions and followup. Details are in the flyer attached to this newsletter. Please contact Kathy with any questions or to register. [email protected] or 505-474-6921 (cell).
*************** Contributions to the May Sectional: Unit 383’s May Sectional will be held at the Chavez Center in Santa Fe Friday, May 3rd through Sunday, May 5th. The flyer for the event is part of this Newsletter. After mid-April, we will be posting a sign-up sheet for those who wish to do so to contribute various food items for one or more mornings and/or the Friday and Saturday afternoon snacks. In addition, if anyone would like to contribute financially to help the Unit with tournament expenses, please either give a check payable to ACBL Unit 383 to Sandy Lemon or give a director either a check or cash in an envelope with Sandy’s name on the outside. We look forward to seeing you at the event!
******************* New Player Bulletin Board: The Newer Player Bulletin Board is on the north wall by coatrack. It has useful information for newer players - game schedules, upcoming classes, bridge tips, some humor. It’s also the place to fill out forms requesting name tags (@$12). I also always have scorebooks with me, which are excellent to track on your games and store useful information (@$13). Contact Carmen ([email protected])
******************** Did your loose a Sterling Silver Bee Charm? It was found in one of the bidding boxes when we were setting up for the Awards Game. Contact Cheryl ([email protected]) LOST: A blue, L.L. Bean jacket on Friday, March 22. If you mistakenly took it home, please return it to the coat rack at the Bridge Center.

Still Time to Enroll at the First Class on April 6th at 9:30 am
Modern Bridge III:Defense Your instructor is Art McHaffie: a Gold Life Master experienced in tournament and club play. Art has been directing and teaching bridge on high-end cruise ships like Silversea,
Crystal and Regent since 2005. Art likes to work with advancing intermediate and beginning players to help them improve their bridge play and results.
In the Defense lessons, Art will help the defenders analyze the information available
about each hand and plan a defense to defeat the declarer’s plan for the hand. Each week, a new topic will be introduced with a brief PowerPoint presentation followed by the
opportunity for each class participant to “defend” real hands vs. real opponents where they can apply the principles they have just learned.
The recommended text is ACBL’s Defense in the 21st Century which is available at Baron
Barclay and Amazon. In order to get the most out of the lessons, students should read relevant sections of the text in advance.
Discussion topics include: Standard opening leads from length or strength.
Rule of Eleven to analyze your partner’s lead. Third hand play and second hand play.
Attitude signals. Count signals.
Suit preference signals.
