AGENDA

I would like to begin by thanking the Board Members for their on-going support and counsel over this past year. The YMCA of Sault Ste. Marie requires a diverse board made up of representatives that cover many of our communities’ interests. Over this past year we have been lucky to have had such a board. Their contribution has been invaluable, offering a broader perspective with a wealth of knowledge on many issues.

In the fall of 2013, the Board and Staff embarked upon a full scale Strategic Planning exercise. Y Ontario was instrumental in engaging a facilitator who supported our process. At the conclusion of exercise, the Board and Staff agreed that we would focus on four key objectives over the next five years.

Our emphasis on philanthropy has resulted in deeper member relationships and raised the recognition of the YMCA as a charity.

Critical infrastructure will be renewed and ready for the next 10 years. A focus on partnerships has opened new doors and engaged a broader segment of the community. Our YMCA is recognized as an Employer of Choice in Sault Ste. Marie.

Under the direction of the CEO, staff have been tasked with developing Operational/Tactical Plans to support the implementation of the Strategic Plan priorities. I know they are well on their way to completing those plans and will be working those details into tasks such as budget planning and other forecasting.

I also wish to thank the many committees of the Board for their hard work, particularly the Strategic Planning Committee Chaired by John Sullivan. There was a very significant investment of time by Directors, staff and others in that committees’ work. Other notable committee work was performed by the members of the Philanthropy and Finance committees where our focus has been on our financial situation.

Many of you are also aware that Sault College purchased RYTAC this past spring. RYTAC will live on in memories of many for years to come. The proceeds from the sale have been ear marked to support our member subsidization program that helps those with financial needs attend the YMCA at a reduced cost.

As has always been the case, we as a board are very fortunate to have a committed and caring staff and CEO that work so very hard to give our community the very best programming possible. With a new clear vision for the future, I am confident that staff will rise to the occasion and continue to provide high quality programming and services to the families of Sault Ste. Marie.

2013-2014 was a challenging year but by working together, we accomplished much! I echo our Board Chair Paul Glassford’s thanks to all Board members, staff and volunteers for their hard work on many fronts.

Our Board Committees accomplished a great deal of work for our Association. From the Governance Committee preparing for the Ontario Not-For-Profit Corporation Act changes, to the Finance Committee making difficult decisions to improve our financial position, to Philanthropy trying to build our capacity; the members of each of these committees have put in much time and effort to move our Association forward. Thank-you for your dedication and hard work.

Over the past year, we have added some new faces to our Leadership Team. Our new team has dedicated themselves to improving our program offerings, from ChildCare through to Adult Programs, and Aquatics to Youth and Family programs. The Leadership Team has focused on services that are convenient, welcoming and safe for all participants in an effort to develop our Association. The dedication and commitment of all of our staff and volunteers are what makes our YMCA stand out as a leader in wellness for our community.

Our greatest achievement this past year was undoubtedly the development of a bold and ambitious Strategic Plan that will carry us to 2019. Board members and staff have put hours of work into developing a Strategic Plan that will be the basis of our decisions moving forward. Our vision is to create “A connected YMCA for a healthier Sault Ste. Marie”.

By continuing to work together, we will build our capacity to meet the needs of the community and strengthen our foundation to ensure our success long into the future. Thank you,

11. Motion.092313.04: BIRT BDO Dunwoody be appointed auditors for the 2013/2014 fiscal year. Moved by N. A. Strom, seconded by J. Rajotte: Carried

12. Keynote speaker, Gord Saunders presented a history of the YMCA and shared stories from his personal involvement with the Association.

13. Quarter Century membership awards were presented by P. Glassford and K. Caruso to Kara Gough, Dale Bradley and Stephen Sears. Also honoured with this award but unable to attend were: Bob Rose, Lorrie Bottos and Doug Rix.

14. Service Pins were presented by K. Caruso and P. Glassford to: Shaun Antler/15yrs, Christina Reid/15yrs and Karen Spyce/10yrs. Unable to attend was Nancy Slewidge/5yrs.

15. Volunteer Service awards were presented by K. Caruso and S. Portengen to Robert Rattle, Benjamin Rattle, Jeffrey Slingsby, Maxine Smale, Cliff Harris and Ian Chambers. Also receiving awards but unable to attend were: Eric Barton and Jerry Mancuso.

16. C. Ougler then called for nominations from the floor. Seeing none, she called for a motion to close the nominations.

17. Motion.092313.05: Seeing no further nominations I move, that the nominations be closed and that the following members: Wm. R. Burns, Norman Chartrand, Mark Lawson and Allyson Schmidt be declared elected to the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA Board of Directors for a 3 year term ending in 2016. Moved by C. Ougler, seconded by P. MacPhail. Carried

18. The election of officers for the upcoming year will be the first item of business at the next meeting of the Board as indicated by the Association’s By-Law.
