“Helping one of the West End’s most famous theatres achieve their own sustainability goals.” The Savoy Theatre is a West End theatre in the Strand in the City of Westminster, London. The theatre opened on 10 October 1881 and was built by Richard D’Oyly Carte on the site of the old Savoy Palace. The theatre was the rst public building in the world to be lit entirely by electricity. It is a Grade II* listed building. Maleon were asked to review the options for the new heating energy source for the theatre as part of the refurbishment of the adjacent Savoy Hotel. Originally the theatre’s central heating services were supplied from the central steam plant within the hotel building, but as part of the extensive refurbishment of the hotel completed in 2010 this service was terminated. The design options and solutions provided for the new heating services were carefully considered and coordinated to be sympathetic with the existing building structure as well as the programme of works being undertaken by the hotel refurbishment which directly impacted the ability to install new central plant. The design solution also had to be achievable using the existing building electrical supply, which could not be upgraded within the tight time constraints of the project. Maleon worked with the theatre and their contractors to provide a series of design options, which were achievable both within the programme and the restricted plant space within the building. The nal solution chosen with the theatre was successfully implemented and installed within programme to provide the heating plant to serve the theatre, whilst not disrupting the operation of the theatre during the works. “Helping one of the West End’s most famous theatres achieve their own sustainability goals.”

The Savoy Theatre is a West End theatre in the Strand in the City of Westminster, London. The theatre opened on 10 October 1881 and was built by Richard D’Oyly Carte on the site of the old Savoy Palace.

The theatre was the first public building in the world to be lit entirely by electricity.

The design options and solutions provided for the new heating services were carefully considered and coordinated to be sympathetic with the existing building structure as well as the programme of works being undertaken by the hotel refurbishment which directly

impacted the ability to install new central plant. The design solution also had to be achievable using the existing building electrical supply, which could not be upgraded within the tight time constraints of the project.

Maleon worked with the theatre and their contractors to provide a series of design options, which were achievable both within the programme and the restricted plant space within the building. The final solution chosen with the theatre was successfully implemented and installed within programme to provide the heating plant to serve the theatre, whilst not disrupting the operation of the theatre during the works.
