The outline plans also include a 63-bedroom hotel, drive- through cafe, and an area for office and commercial units. Cheshire East Council gave the green light to the project, with conditions, at a meeting of the Strategic Planning Board on October 15. But Sandbach councillor Sam Corcoran said: “I am disgusted that Cheshire East Council have caved in to the developers. “I have argued for many years for a world class science and business park on this site. “Now the developers have given permission to build houses, with no guarantee of any employment development. “The developers can now build 50 houses without providing anything towards a business park. “In total they can build 250 houses and all they have to provide is an enhanced roundabout by Junction 17 and services for a business park. “It does not seem to have occurred to the council that the services required by a business park are very similar to services for housing. “Services are defined as the provision of access, electricity and / or gas, water, drainage and telecommunications. “I would love to be proved wrong and for the developers to build a science and business park, but I was right when I predicted that the developers, having gained planning permission for a business park, would be back asking for the conditions to be relaxed to allow houses to be built first. “I was right a decade ago when I predicted that the last ‘business park’ proposal to be approved was a get rich quick scheme that would not lead to a decent business park.” GREEN LIGHT An artist’s impression of the scheme.

M6 WORKTO STARTWORK is to begin this month to improve Sandbach’s motorway junction. The project, costing £3.4 million will look to improve the busy junction 17 of the M6. It is hoped the scheme will relieve congestion and make the junction safer for motorists. Vehicles leaving the motorway travelling north will be met with a one-lane roundabout, whereas those travelling south will be directed by signals onto Congleton Road. The work is being done under a major ‘pinch point’ improvement scheme coordinated by the Highways Agency. It is likely to last until the end of March next year. To minimise disruption, it will take place from 8pm until 5am weekdays and until 7am on Saturdays. Construction contractors

Balfour Beatty Mott Macdonald hosted a public information event for local businesses and residents at Sandbach Town Hall earlier this month. Jakub Malaj, service delivery manager for the Highways Agency, said that long discussions had taken place with the local authority to decide what would improve the junction. He said: “Currently, traffic builds up along the slip road and even onto the main motorway, which causes congestion and safety issues.” From October 27 to March, the M6 junction 17 slip roads and the stretch of Congleton Road near to the motorway will be closed from 8pm Monday to Friday. A temporary speed limit of 40 mph will also be in place for motorists driving from Sandbach and Arclid.

SANDBACH has scooped an award to be named as Best Kept Village/Market Town. The accolade was granted at the Community Pride award, organised by Cheshire Community Action. The ceremony took place at Congleton Town Hall in the

presence of a large gathering of civic leaders. A spokesman said: “Sandbach is a well deserved winner with a very strong community. “It is a busy community with many local volunteers who all work hard to make it a vibrant place to live, work and visit.”

Award winning

Sandbach’s Waitrose store is looking to help tackle the issue of isolation this Christmas. For the second year running Waitrose will help to support elderly, homeless and vulnerable people. The retailer will support

Christmas lunch events for people who might otherwise be on their own on Christmas day. Waitrose is asking organisers of local Christmas dinner events to get in touch with the store, where they can apply for support from the retailer.

by STEWART GREENA RECENTLY discovered Roman Ring has been on display at Sandbach Library. Discovered a couple of years ago the ring is now in the possession of the Congleton Museum. Once it had been discovered and declared treasure trove it

was put up for offers and with the backing of the Victor and Albert Museum and Sandbach Town Council it was purchased on behalf of the area. Ian Doughty, chairman of the Congleton Museum Trustees said that this was the first in a number of local outings for the ring.

A WOMAN was taken to hospital by air ambulance after her car collided with a tree. Fire crews from Sandbach and Crewe were alerted to the crash on Bradwall Road, in

Sandbach, at around 2.49pm on October 6. They removed the roof of the vehicle to free the woman, who was then taken to hospital by air ambulance.

SANDBACH RUFC have made a promising start to the new season. Bradwall Road first XI were sitting fourth in the National League 3 Midlands with a game in hand, as we went to press. This is despite slipping up 27-24 away to Old Halesonians earlier

this month. A try in the final four minutes saw Sandbach brought to an end Sandbach’s impressive unbeaten run this season. Team manager Stuart Battersby said: “Old Hales are a well drilled team and especially with full-back Chris Hooper are easily able to punish the

slightest mistake. “The truth is that Sandbach weren’t at their best. “They conceded too many penalties, missed touch on a number of occasions and lacked some of the accuracy that they have shown in recent matches. “On another day it would

probably have been a different result, but sometimes you just aren’t allowed to play as you would like.” Sandbach earned two bonus points from the game, but slipped to fourth place. • Pictured is Gaz Caen running at Chris Hooper before crashing over the line.
