Amarillo may not be the biggest town, and it may not have thelargest pool of musicians, but there are grand exceptions. So,when an individual comes across a fantastic band, it’s a diamondin the rough. It’s growing immensely important to support local artand local musicians, and as far as good music goes, The Clanks isa unique band that brings a great vibe to the Amarillo music scene. They incorporate aspects of Blues, of artful Indie music, and easy-going melodies.

Brandon Todd, the vocalist, guitarist, lyricist, and pretty much themastermind of The Clanks, takes good care to deliver a diverse musical experience. He has been in the Amarillomusic scene for a lengthy amount of time, and he has dabbled in as many different bands as musical instruments. He plays the harmonica, guitar, organ, bass, mandolin, and even rocks out on the kazoo, though he brings hisskills in vocals, guitar, and harmonica to The Clanks. The Clanks is his newest project, and alongside drummer

Seth Havens and bassist Steven Ronk, they offer Amarillo a differenttaste of live music with their shows. With influences for their musiccoming from bands like Pink Floyd, Mars Volta, Johnny Cash, JanisJoplin, Sunny Day Real Estate, Modest Mouse, and Elliot Smith, they bring a lot to the musical table.

They play downtown often, doing sets in the bars on Polk Street, like Bodega’s, Butler’s, and Burberry’s, but they also appreciatethe venues with great crowd involvement like The Golden LightCantina and EBGB’s. “When the crowd gets involved, it makes ourmusic even better,” explains Brandon Todd “We feed off of it.” It’snot hard for the crowd to get involved with their laidback, yet refinedmusical talent.

Their sets are about fifty-fifty on original songs and covers. Withtheir originals, they offer great diversity with songs that are emo-based, and songs that are 12-bar blues based aswell. There’s something for everyone in their sets. And when it comes to covers, they stick to the classics, and theydo a really good job of it, too. They cover the greats like Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Hendrix, and The Rolling Stones, and in doing so, they pay homage to the classic rock scene by doing so. They also have been known to collaboratewith young musicians to add a different sound every now and then.

With these three musician’s massive talent, their band puts on an entertaining, lively, and captivating show. Theireclectic tastes provide a fiercelyinteresting musical experience for theaudience. They play good musicthroughout the set, whether it is acovered classic or a new song oftheirs.

Brandon Todd is constantlyincorporating new stylistic changesto his music, and he even mentioneda yearning to pursue a more Indieand Folk vibe with his music, takinginspiration from the band Bright Eyes.

Don’t miss out on this great band. Gocatch one of their upcoming shows, and indulge in Brandon Todd’sexceptional musical endeavors.

March 17 is Saint Patrick’s Day, the day when the Irish honor their PatronSaint, who is rumored to have driven all the snakes out of Ireland. This mayor may not have happened, but the Irish will tell you that there’s not a snaketo be found in all of Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Day actually honors the day hedied, and not his birthday, as it’s widely assumed.

Although not an Americanholiday, Saint Patrick’s day iscelebrated here in the US, andwhat better way to celebratein Amarillo than at Mulligan’sSports Pub and Bar? Locatedat 2511 Paramount Blvd, thepub is privately and locallyowned by Robert and RachelStiles. With all the perks of alarger bar in a bigger city,Mulligan’s has a friendly staffthat is more like a close-knit family that tries to ensure their patrons havefun. The pub promotes responsible service of alcohol, and provides patronswith free cab service everyday should the need arise.

With Saint Patrick’s Day fast approaching, Mulligan’s offers drink specialsincluding $4.00 Irish Car Bombs, $2.00 Guinness or Killian’s, and $1.50 greenbeer. Live music is on tap for the wearin’ o’ the green, and local bandInsufficient Funds will be playing there from 8pm-12am.

With a full-service bar and menu items such as burgers, buffalo wings, andchips and dips, one need not be worried about leaving hungry or thirsty. The biggest sellers on the menu are the burgers and appetizer samplers, which offer a choice of four different appetizers for you to enjoy.

They offer drink specials every night, and Happy Hour is from 4pm-7pmwith $2.00 well drinks. During the month of March, Mulligan’s offers $1.50domestic drafts including Budweiser, Bud Light, Coors, and Michelob UltraLight.

Go Green!Although, they do not serve frozen drinks, you’re sure to find something youlike. How about Two Dollar Tuesday, where all pints and bottles are $2.00.Or, maybe Rockstar Thursday is more your style, with Jagerbombs,Tuacabombs, Cherrybombs, and a few others, all at $3.50 apiece.

If sports or billiards are your favorite pastimes, then Mulligan’s has youcovered there too. With 17 regular TV’s and 2 projection screens, you’re notlikely to miss a game. Enjoy watching your favorite college basketball teamduring March Madness, or come in March 7th for UFC Fight Night. But besure and come early to get a seat, because the pub is crowded on fightnights.

There’s also 3 pool tables, a shuffleboard table, and darts for customers totry their hands at. The shuffleboard is free, while the darts cost you a smalldeposit of $5.00 per hour, and the pool table takes quarters.

Private parties, bachelor parties, and other private events are also wel-comed, and Mulligan’s rents out the shuffleboard room for those who wantit. The rental price varies on time reserved, and guests get to have their ownpersonal servers for the duration of the party.

For their regular customers, who want to have their own piece of Mulligan’s,beer mugs are offered for$35.00 per year. The mugis marked with thepurchaser’s name, and anumber, and is kept at thepub all year. Any time themug’s owner comes in fora beer, it’s served in hisor her own personal mug. Each year brings a newmug, and Mulligan’s willsend you an email re-minder when it’s time tore-new your mug.

Mulligan’s is open everyday from 4:00pm-2:00am, and you must be 21 or older with proper ID toenter. Check out their webpage at www.myspace.com/mulliganssportspub

A Story of...Avenue 10

By Eva Harder

About ten years ago, Sirc Michaels, age 34 from the NYC area, was drivingthrough Amarillo and saw something he wanted to change; he saw a youthdemographic that was bored and a youth that was devoid of an artisticvenue.

Since then, Michael has been visiting the Panhandle pretty regularly, withthe express purpose to bring shows to Amarillo that the people wouldn’tordinarily see; he wanted to create a place where all sorts of artists, actorsand musicians could congregate at will, a place that wasn’t a bar, but avenue.

So in May of 2008, Michaels co-founded “Avenue Ten,” a venue that promisesto do just that.

Though Michaels has a diverse background in directing, producing, andplaywriting, his main function at”“Avenue Ten” involves handling publicrelations.

He defines Avenue Ten as a place that pushes to develop the performingarts in Amarillo by offering novice artists the opportunity to cultivate theirtalent. The group mostly works with actors and professionals, but seeks tobe involved with musicians and concerts as well.

Michaels says they are “driven to help Amarillo in a real way;” they’re not init for the money and are even looking to host free workshops in the future. They hold a special interest in novices, in teaching artists who areinexperienced but willing to learn.

More of the venue’s aspirations include future tours, being as professionalas they can be, and making sure their shows and performances reachperfection.’“What matters is that the story on stage is perfect… We’re not theonly show in town, but I think we’re the best.”

Michaels asserts that they are not a community theatre. It’s a place for artistswho are serious about what they do.

Avenue Ten believes that there are a lot of performing artists in this area

who simply need to be discovered, but that there’s no actual thrust from thecity to make that happen.

Though the group has a lot of ambition for their own venue, their main goalis that the people of Amarillo get involved in the arts and check them out,be it ALT, AC, or the ballet. “It’s all good.” And while the art community is abig one, Avenue Ten are the foul-mouthed kids in the corner. While theymay believe in a lot of things, censorship is definitely not one of them. Theirwebsite proclaims that they’re the “…folks your mama warned you about.”

Avenue Ten was also recently involvedin some controversy with the Christiangroup “Repent Amarillo” whichcaused them to lose their space on10th Avenue, not to mention a cutepun — Avenue Ten is actually a playon words; a venue on Tenth.

It began when Avenue Ten decidedto put on the play “Bent,” a tale oftwo homosexual men in theconcentration camp of Dachau in the1930’s.

Soon after, “Repent Amarillo” listedAvenue Ten on their website as a “gaytheatre;” Avenue Ten contacted“Repent Amarillo” in hopes ofscheduling a meeting to discuss thisapparent misunderstanding, but“Repent Amarillo” refused. “RepentAmarillo” managed to shut down their space on 10th Avenue on the groundsthat the venue was a retail space, not performance.

“Avenue Ten’s” current, temporary location is the Masonic Lodge on 6thAvenue. Michaels says they are hoping to permanently acquire the WrecksTheatre and to restore it into a true theatre and lounge for all people andall groups, college-age and senior citizens, locals and tourists, because, after all, “The arts know no age.”

Some of Avenue Ten’s upcoming shows include’“Fat Pig” by Neil Labut and“The Laramie Project” by Moises Kaufman. For information about AvenueTen and upcoming Shows, visit their website at http://www.myspace.com/avenue10.

Being on a weight loss regimen is no easy task, but it’s definitely doable! The trick is not to expect weight loss results overnight, and to stay motivated. The longer you stay motivated, the more weight loss success you will achieve.Motivation comes from all sources. It could be a picture, a friend, or otherweight loss success stories. Follow these weight loss motivation tips to keepyou motivated and closer to your goal. Find out what works for you andfocus on that.

Motivational Weight Loss Tips

• Don’t look for immediate results. Your initial weight loss will be waterweight, so plan for the long haul.

• This is a new way of life, so don’t make drastic changes.• Set small goals of 5 lb increments.• If you splurge on food, forgive yourself and move on. It happens to

everybody.• Find a weight loss buddy who is “on call” and be there for them as well.• Keep your thoughts positive. Don’t focus on your mishaps.• Keep a journal and write down everything you eat and calories burned

during exercise.• If you reach a weight loss plateau, reduce calories and increase exercise.• If you’re ready to eat something you know you shouldn’t, ask yourself if

you want to “wear” it the next day.• Take a “before” picture and tape it on the fridge door.• Take it one day at a time and set realistic goals.• Don’t cut out all of your favorite foods, you’ll feel deprived. Instead, reduce

the portions.

Weight Loss Motivation Tips• Wear comfortable shoes and

clothing when exercising. It will be

easier for you and you’ll be less likely

to incur injuries.

• Make your exercise as enjoyable

as possible. If that means a TV

and fan in front of your treadmill,

don’t hesitate.

• Remember not only will you look

better, you’ll be healthier.

• Make losing weight a control

issue. Vow to regain control of your

weight, and your life.

• Reward yourself with non-food

items when you reach goals.

• Remember, you are the only one responsible for your weight and your

health.

• When you start reaching your small goals, attend social events and enjoy

the compliments of others who notice. Now that’s weight loss motivation

for the next 5 lbs.

• Wear your “fat” clothes around the house. This keeps you aware of how

big you really were and gives you satisfaction.

• Unfortunately, there’s people who will resent or envy your success. Enjoy!

• Remember, you’re successful with every pound you lose.

• The best motivation is when you reach your goals!

It’s the big, yellow and black building just south of the Coulter Street Super

Wal-Mart in Amarillo. It’s also the home of some of the hottest wings in the

city.

Buffalo Wild Wings, locally owned by Kendall Howard out of Lubbock, has

been in Amarillo since 2007. Area General Manager Jeff Sherrill says that

the biggest sellers are the wings, with Honey Barbeque being the popular

choice. The wings are spun to coat the wings in sauce, and come in flavors

from Mild to Blazing.

The Buffalo Blazing Challenge is a chance for the very brave to try their

taste buds’ mettle against the clock. 12 Blazing Buffalo Wings are brought

out, and when the customer’s ready, the stopwatch clicks. The challenge is

to eat 12 Blazing Wings in six minutes. Many have tried, many have failed.

But, the unofficial record is 1:21. The winner’s picture is put on the wall for

others to see, and as unofficial bragging rights.

Wings come in batches of 6,

12, 18, 24 or 50 for tradi-

tional, or 8, 12, 24 and 50

for boneless. But during the

week, there are some wing

specials.

Tuesday nights, traditional-

style wings are only $.40

each, and on Thursdays,

boneless wings are $.60

each. Wednesdays is bone-

less tenders for $1.00.

In addition to the wings, burgers, wraps and salads, as well as an array of

appetizers, can be found on the menu, with the appetizer sampler the most

popular. Southwest Dippers, mozzarella sticks, buffalo chips (thin-cut fries)

are just a few of the appetizers served at Buffalo Wild Wings.

Happy hour is Monday -Friday, 4 to 7pm, with a choice of over twenty

beers on tap and a full service bar. Each month is a different beer of the

month, where you can buy a 23 ounce draft for $3.25. They also have daily

specials, and food and drink are served until 1:30 am. Green Beer is served

on Saint Patrick’s Day, as well.

During big games, such as the Superbowl, or college playoff games, Buf-

falo Wild Wings usually has a full house, and overflow parking is available

to accommodate the extra crowd. In addition the UFC and Dallas Cowboys

games also draw big crowds. The establishment supports several college

teams, including University of Texas, Oklahoma State University and Texas

Tech. If there are a lot of fans of a particular college in attendance, the

University’s fight song will be played over the sound system. With of the

number of Buffalo Wild Wings across the country, they have a special deal

with the AFL, AFC, and all the other sports franchises. You can watch your

favorite team play on any one of the 11 big screen, or 42 regular screen

TV’s. Special events, such as the Inauguration, or other big news, are also

broadcast. During “March Madness”, every single game is played in it’s

entirety.

If sports are not

your thing, you

can play poker

with other play-

ers in the restau-

Time player, or

eral arcade

games as well as

Buzz Time Trivia.

Every menu item

is available for takeout, and orders can usually be fulfilled within 10-20

minutes. Although there are no reservations, the restaurant will hold tables

for a large party, if they are notified in advance. The staff is friendly, and

enjoy the work atmosphere, and the patrons are encouraged to have fun

too. Go by and check out Buffalo Wild Wings. Maybe you could be the next

There’s a new eatery in Canyon. Located next to the Holiday Inn Express, at2611 4th Avenue, is Buffaloes Southwest Cafe. Recognizable by it’s pink front, the cafe opened October 20th, 2008 with the tag line, “World Famous Wings”.Although the franchise is locally owned, there are 57 Buffaloes Cafe’s in theUS, as well as locations in Saudi Arabia, Puerto Rico, and Iraq. The Canyoncafe is locally owned by DrewAlexander, and overseen by Di-rector of Operations KevinSimms.

Buffaloes Southwest Cafe offersan array of food, appetizers, anddesserts, and has a full servicebar. They are the first full servicebar in Canyon, with a full alco-hol permit that allows them toserve not only beer and wine, butother spirits, too. But Simms saysthe cafe takes a responsibility with alcohol, and that they are a restaurant, nota bar.

The menu consists of burgers, wraps, salads and ribs, with ribs and Buffalowings being the biggest sellers. Their biggest seller on the appetizer menu isthe Trailblazer Sampler and Southwest Egg rolls. All of their sauces are madefrom scratch in the kitchen, including their Vidalia Onion sauce, and barbequesauce. Soups, Queso, and tortilla chips are also made fresh, as nothing comesout of a can at Buffaloes Cafe. Although they serve Buffalo wings, they do notserve boneless wings, but do have a boneless chicken tenders platter. Theircorn on the cob is deep fried, and the Buffalo wings are fried using peanut oilin three different stages. Once to blanch, then to cook, and lastly, to crispthem. The wings come in flavors ranging from Lemon Pepper, Honey Barbequeand Coconut Jerk. There is no fried fish on the menu, but they do offer salmon.

Simms, a West Texas A & M Univer-sity Alum, is a huge supporter of theHerdsmen Organization, the care-takers of the WTAMU mascot, Thun-der X. The back room, which can beused for meetings or private parties,is aptly named the Herdsmen Room. The Herdsmen Room boasts a bigscreen TV, can be used for PowerPoint presentations, and seats be-tween 40-45 people. The Herdsmen

organization, which is advised by Shawn Burns of the University Police De-partment, holds a meeting in the Herdsmen Room once a month. Therefore, the Herdsmen and their wives or girlfriends are given a 10% discount on alltheir meals. One day amonth, 10% of all meal salesare given to the Herdsmen tohelp defray expenses the or-ganization might incur. Youcan buy a stuffed buffalo atthe hostess stand, and thecost of them also are donatedto the Herdsmen. Simmshopes to have Thunder X andthe Herdsmen at the cafeonce a month, but dates arestill pending on that.

Check out the 900-pound statue of a buffalo, famous for her role in the epicDances With Wolves. Actual arrow marks can be seen in the hide, and sheover looks the main dining room.

Buffaloes Southwest Cafe is going to being to offer catering, and providesroom service for the neighboring Holiday Inn Express. Party platters are avail-able, including chicken tender platters, that can be delivered. Or, opt for thecurbside-to-go service, where the staff will bring your order to your car.

The staff at Buffaloes is friendly, dedicated and fun, and most have been withthe cafe since its opening. Smoking is allowed in the bar area, with a sepa-rate air conditioning system to help keep the smoke from drifting into themain dining area.

They stay open late for the musical drama, “Texas”, and on Wednesdays, kidseat free with the purchase of an adult meal. Next time you’re in Canyon, go towhere the buffalo really do roam, and try Buffaloes Southwest Cafe.
