In addition to their nnti-republican teaching the French oppose the Jesuits because of the allcdged immoral ten- dencies of Jesuitical casuistry. To call a man Jesuitical is to say that he can never bo depended upon, that nei- ther his word or his bond is good for anything and that to excuse his deviltry lie will invent the most ridiculous reason* to quiet wliat lie pleases to call his conscience. The man who seems to have thoroughly engrafted this kind of teaching on the Jesuit stock was Father (Jury who when lie died recent- ly was a professor in the College of the Jesuits at Rome. Hi* works have gone through several editions, they have been commended by high ecclesiastical authority aud they are appointed in Roman Catholic seminaries in all lands as the standard Manual ot -Mornl Theology. In these works arc set forth the three cardinal propositions which have won for the Jesuit* tho scorn of tho world—Probnbilism, Mental Reser- vation, and Justification of Means by the End. By tho doctrine of Probabilism they tench that a man may do anything he pleases if he can produce a probable | vallt y res for n certain'price. Believing tho doctrine one may make oath before a court or ebrewhere to a lie aud then be absolved ft'omall wrong doing by asserting that he mentally re- served the truth while taLing the oath. Father Gurv say is that no oath i* bind- ing “ if made with the intention indeed of swearing, bnt not of uiudhig,” ami adds this explanation: if a donation, bits boon promised on oat In bnt baa not yet been delivered, is it Mill binding? which is answered, negatively on the ground that as the deed is incomplete it is void iu substance and consequently no oath in reference thereto can be held to heve binding foree.” He save that the “ binding force of an oath lies to be interpreted according to tiie tacit conditions either included or implied therein; which are: fat, if 1 could liave done so without grave injury; 2d, .if matter* had. not notably changed; Stir if the rights and will of tiie anjierior wore not contrary; fltb, if thr oilier had kept hisfoith: 5th if Hie other does not waive his i ight.” Any person can see that the first of these conditions put* it within every one's power to virtually repudiate liis oath whenever lie secs fit to say that its |jcrfonnai>ce would bo accompanied by what lie himself thinks would be discomfort; while if an oath is to be binding only so long as it doe* not conflict with tiie wishes of a super- ior thousands of miles away^he soouer Ilie farce of swearing to anything is done away with the better. Some illustrations tony make the matter dearer. Edmnnd betroth* him- self to Helen, with the mental reser- vation that if matter* change, he can repudiate the contract. At the point of his marriage his uncle dies leaving him a forge fortune. Things having changed Edmund jilts the lady and ■ Father Gary says that “ Edmund is not to be disturbed for his action.'r A ser- if the argument in its favor, no matter if he has an almost irresistible inward im- pression that tbe truth is really on tbe other side. A grave motive may be accepted as full warrant for action even though greater ones roav be adduced In opposition. If an educated man wishes to do anything it is only snffi- cllable< a maM to 8WCB1. to t, cent that he has thought over the merely reserving the truth in hi* v J . servant thinks lie is not paid sufficient (Jury says that he may fiefp himself to his master's property ff he made the contract under moral fear or strain of necessity or if he considers himself overworked. The doctrine of Mental Reservation cly reserving the truth iu his own mind. Since the business and the courts of tiie world are carried on through the perfect faith of men in men, depending entirely on the truth of what men 'say and swear to, how ,, ... . . . . , lo»g would society exist if all should It W4l be easily seen how fa,-reach.ng mo„.all v reaervo gomct hi whe„ 18 ,S '1of Mne " hlcb nrtri,“ “ act have any transaction, with ,heir neigh- on the authority of opinions which mav matter and 1ms a probable reason; if an uneducated man wishes to do any- thing, it is enough that lie can produce a single author who recommends the action “even though this teaching be cantrary to what is commonly held." Edith blushed, and without raisin^ lier eyes replied quietly: “ They are not for myself.” Harcout colored, ami it was evident from his maimer that what lie heard was from some cause, disagreeable to him. He looked inquiringly at Clara and then answered: “ Whoever tin* person is, Miss Edith he lias great reason to be proud, and „ !Edith caught the look and understood ; But, Harcout had risen from his scat L it; mid when sho returned she spontilie 1 for now recognizing tiie voice of Editli, night in tears. To what extent it leads tiie following, taken from Father Gary's hook vol. 1 p. 406, will show: “Quirinus, with tho intention to steal a piece ot cloth, breaks into a sliop at night and lights a candle, takin bors? Harcout saw tbe tbe action aud mentally resolved to wait on the committee in the morning and redeem the ring, and with this determination glanced at Edith tc see what would bo lier offering. Ignorant of her pecuniary situation, lie saw with disgust that sho merely bowed and miffored tho plate to pass on, though a deep blush mantled lier cheek.

“ This is a strange request,” said the matron, “bnt as you seem honest, and wish tbe monoy for charity, I will nc- cced to your terms if you give me your name and residence.”

There was a pause, as if a struggle was going on in the other's breast ; then she asked for a piece of paper to write her address.

II.In addition to their nnti-republican

teaching the French oppose the Jesuits because of the allcdged immoral tendencies of Jesuitical casuistry. To call a man Jesuitical is to say that he can never bo depended upon, that neither his word or his bond is good for anything and that to excuse his deviltry lie will invent the most ridiculous reason* to quiet wliat lie pleases to call his conscience. The man who seems to have thoroughly engrafted this kind of teaching on the Jesuit stock was Father (Jury who when lie died recently was a professor in the College of the Jesuits at Rome. Hi* works have gone through several editions, they have been commended by high ecclesiastical authority aud they are appointed in Roman Catholic seminaries in all lands as the standard Manual ot -Mornl Theology. In these works arc set forth the three cardinal propositions which have won for the Jesuit* tho scorn of tho world—Probnbilism, Mental Reservation, and Justification of Means by the End.

By tho doctrine of Probabilism they tench that a man may do anything he pleases if he can produce a probable | vallt y res for n certain'price.

Believing tho doctrine one may make oath before a court o r ebrewhere to a lie aud then be absolved ft'omall wrong doing by asserting that he mentally reserved the truth while taLing the oath. Father G urv say is that no oath i* binding “ if made with the intention indeed of swearing, bnt not of uiudhig,” ami adds this explanation: i f a donation, bits boon promised on oat In bnt baa not yet been delivered, is i t Mill binding? which is answered, negatively on the ground that as the deed is incomplete it is void iu substance and consequently no oath in reference thereto can be held to heve binding foree.” He save that the “ binding force o f an oath lies to be interpreted according to tiie tacit conditions either included or implied therein; which are: fat, if 1 could liave done so without grave injury; 2d,

.if matter* had. not notably changed; Stir if the rights and will o f tiie anjierior wore not contrary; fltb, if th r oilier had kept hisfoith: 5th if Hie other does not waive his i ight.” Any person can see that the first of these conditions put* it within every one's power to virtually repudiate liis oath whenever lie secs fit to say tha t its |jcrfonnai>ce would bo accompanied by what lie himself thinks would be discomfort; while if an oath is to be binding only so long as it doe* not conflict with tiie wishes of a superior thousands of miles aw ay^he soouer I lie farce of swearing to anything is done away with the better.

Some illustrations tony make the matter dearer. Edmnnd betroth* himself to Helen, with the mental reservation that if matter* change, he can repudiate the contract. At the point of his marriage his uncle dies leaving him a forge fortune. Things having changed Edmund jilts the lady and ■ Father Gary says that “ Edmund is not to be disturbed for his action.'r A ser

if theargument in its favor, no matter if he has an almost irresistible inward impression that tbe truth is really on tbe other side. A grave motive may be accepted as full warrant for action even though greater ones roav be adduced In opposition. servant thinks lie is not paid sufficient (Jury says that he may fiefp himself to his master's property ff he made the contract under moral fear or strain of necessity or if he considers himself overworked.

Edith blushed, and without raisin^ lier eyes replied quietly:

“ They are not for myself.”Harcout colored, ami it was evident

from his maimer that what lie heard was from some cause, disagreeable to him. He looked inquiringly at Clara and then answered:

Presbyterian Church Reopened. On Sunday afternoon last we had the

pleasure of being present at the <er- vieea of the reopening of the Second Presbyterian Church of Wall township. Rev. Dr. Symons, of the first Presbyterian Church, of Cranbury, preached n very interesting sermon from the fifth and sixth verses of the twentieth chapter of Exodus. This church

the residence of Judge r See Plain, was built

tweatyeovee years ago, nmler the direction o f Rev. Morn Rowell, who was also pastor of the Presbyterian Cbarch of this place at that time. 8arrioat warn ragalariy held In It, we habere, ant il aboat tea years ago, since which thm It has been closed and al- towed to fiOt inee deeay aa a building aetarally will whoa allowed to stand

Ithaaeo remained until a few ago, when a number of the t of tha Presbyterian Church

aad congregation became interested In it aad caused it to be overhauled and repaired. How thoroughly title has been done, nothing bat n visit to the neat little chu. At as it now stends can give one an idea. It has been newly piaatered to part, and the walls paiuteil a beantifttl tint, the seats end the entire interior baa bean painted. A tix- Hgbt chandelier adorns the eenter, and every appointment aboat the interior Is pleasing sod to keeping with the phwe. The building bee also been painted outside,» d in a word, the ap- pearanc of the Church has been changed from that of dilapidation lo be an ornament to the neighborhood. Bov. Mr. Symntea announced at the close of the services that there would be presetting again on Sunday next, at S o’clock.

The very warm weather last week and the first o f this wae most severe in the city and many wished themselves at the sea-sbore again. Tlie New York Herald of Tuesday says: “ There are thousands of people, who have just committed the very general blander of hnrrytng beck to New York because September bat arrived, and these are having a truly wretched time. The difference between the temperature of town and country may uot be' perceptible by day light, hut at night the country is fkr more comfortable than almost any city home can be. Not ofltener than once in ten years is the first half of September a great improvement upon August, ss most families have learned by sweltering experience; yet year by year the great blander is repeated of coming from the pure air and cool nights of the country to the garbage laden atmosphere and hot, reatlesa nighta of the city. The usual explanation is that the schools open early in September and the children must be ready to attend, the truth being that the little, if any, extra knowledge acquired in the fort-night before cooler weather approaches costs a terrible outlay of the health that has been renewed during the summer. The only people who with perfect safety make the change from country to city are those who remain away until the middle of autumn. These have the extra advantage, too, of enjoying rural life and scenes at a season which, in spite of its occasional storms is far more delightful than July and August can be at any plaoe this side of the Arctic Circle.”

Cranberry Prospects. In company with SfierifT Holman and

two gentlemen from the upper counties o f the State, we made quite an extensive tour through Jackson township on Monday, visiting a number of cranberry bogs during tlie trip, and interviewing several prominent growers. The gjn- eral result of oar observation and inquiries was that the yield in JacKson township will be larger (han that of last season. Some bogs are considerably a dec ted by tiie “ scald," but lew so than for several year* past; ether* are almost entirely exempt from the disease. Some of the growers will commence picking next week. The berries are ripening rapidly, but aa a rule are not yet sufficiently matured to justify their being gat be red. In thi* neighborhood the berries on a number o f bogs are “ scalding" badly; ou others very little damage has thus fer been done. From all we lutve been able to learn, the cranberry crop in this county now promises a yield at least twenty-five per cent, larger than that of last year.— Tome Hirer Courier.

A Steamer Lost. The loss of the “ Vera Cru*” with

nearly all on board must bo added ►«. the seriea of tee casualties which oflstc have been so multiplied. Hut dreadful as was this disaster it is not accompanied by that Kense of human imcon.pe- fence or criminal ueglcct which in snch cases as tlie burning of the ‘-Narragan- aett produces a sense of commingled shame and indiguatiou almost skin to remorse. The “ Vera Crus” was one of the strongest wooden vessels afloat. She was caught in a cyclone off the coast o f Florida, the teas swept over her, put ont her fires, carried away her upper works and finally broke ber in- two amidships. Her crew aud officers •eem to bare done everything that could be done; no life-boat could be launched or kept alive in the sea; and of the seventy-seven passengers aud crew only seven, at the latest account, are reported as saved.
